MiG - 29 kit recommendations please

Jered

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I haven't made any planes in a while but I was thinking about doing a mig-29 in 1:48. There are a huge amount of kits available and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on kits and or books about their different iterations and markings?

Cheers,

Jered.

P.s. I'm sure you can guess why I have an interest in making one, but I'm not trying to begin a discussion about politics or current events!

GWH for sure. AFAIK there are only two other options, Monogram and Academy, both of which have been boxed under different brands. In terms of accuracy and refinement, GWH is in another league altogether.

GWH. From what I've read, the only real issue is the fit of the engine nacelles (but I haven't built mine yet though). Detail and accuracy wise, leagues above Monogram and Academy (reboxed by Eduard for instance).

actually there is not a huge amount of different kits available in 1/48, as stated already above.

if you want a big spine C model 9.13 , your only oob option is GWH anyways. (Ukraine only uses C models I think for several years)

try to get this boxing:

1345219-29300-62-pristine.jpg

or this one

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/great-wall-hobby-s4814-mig-29-9-13-fulcrum-c--1293714

you need to source decals/ stencils though as well!!!

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/great-wall-hobby-s4811-korean-peoples-army-air-force--1138746

if you want a UB model 9.51  (two seater) you are limited to Academy.

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/academy-12266-mig-29ub-fulcrum-b--1286841

1286841-29300-83-720.jpg

if cost is an issues and you are not going to invest into aftermarket anyways, I would still go for GWH. if cost is a real issue, try o source a cheep, second hand Academy kit. (only A 9.12 and UB 9.51 available though)

happy modelling!

@exdraken you sure about the spine?

Google throws up only short spine aircraft when I google Ukrainian Mig-29.

rather sure...

labeled as Fulcum A, but is a 9.13

do not get confused with the 9.19 really big spine variants, or even the M2/MiG-35 verions

for comparison

Poland, Slovakia and Bulgaria only have 9.12 aircraft.

Serbia has both for some time

cheers,

Werner

Amazing! Thank you, you lot are so knowledgeable.

I think I'm going to go with the kit you suggested with this livery:

Hey, have you managed to find this kit for sale anywhere? I've been looking for a while. The only one I can find at a reasonable price is on a Chinese eBay store and I'm not sure whether to trust it or not.

I think I saw the same one. If it was me personally, I would trust it. I have great faith in eBay and if it's with PayPal too then you are very well protected in my opinion. I've never had issues before when ordering things from China to the UK

The Great Wall Mig-29 was one of the best kits I ever made, and one of the most enjoyable.Very detailed, but we'll engineered.

Highly recommended.

Hmm, the 9-13 variant seems to be out of stock now. Their prices are also veeery high. The ebay option is cheaper, even if it has a longer delivery time.

Unfortunately, for anyone wanting to do a Ukrainian 'digital' Fulcrum, the DN Models mask set is going to be practically impossible to find for a while. A statement on their website says they won't make any more until the war is over, out of respect. Which I find disarmingly honourable for the 21st century!

I found myself a pricely rather acceptable GWH North Korean 9.13 model .... not that I would like to build it in those colors either.....

I also have a Neomega 9.13 conversion somewhere for the Academy kit.... in case someone would prefer this one...

but your are right, DN model masks seem to be impossible to get. Maybe they were out of production already before,,,

some info here on the Ukrainian MU updates:

Regarding the North Korean boxing, attention  it does not come with R-73 IR missiles,  only 4 very nice R-60  and 2 R-27

Not sure if North Korea even has R-73s... strange though for a 9.13 model Fulcrum I have to say!!

any expert know of cockpit differences between the 9-12 and 9-13 versions?

I see Quinta only do a set for the 9-12

I looked though several Yefim Gordon book.... hard to say!

not sure if there is any significant difference, I'd assume the Soviet airframes had nuclear capability that would show in the cockpit, irrespective though if 9.12 or 9.13.....

then there is 9.12A and 9.12B..... for Warsow Pakt and other friendly nations.....

anybody  knows for sure and has photos to share??

allegedly 9.13 (ex Moldovian Fulcrums?) -control panel lower right with orange buttons

Hungarian 9.12, with NATO mods?

Polish 9.12 cockpit (with NATO mods?) - different radio, control panel lower right

Polish/ ex German? 9.12 cockpit (with NATO mods?) small screen in place of control panel lower right

https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/7976372

again Polish  IP

strategic panel in form of the lower right screen ;)

the rest seems identical....

but then come upgrade cockpits.....

like the Serbian ones, or even more so Ukrainian BM.....
