Vintage Vickers Valiant - FINISHED

Now for some details. It's really starting to look like a Valiant now. I did a few more details after these photos and gloss coated it to seal those details, but managed to get a nice fingerprint on the top of the wing. I did manage to fix that though.

And then I noticed that I forgot to add the black anti glare patch in front of the canopy, which I'll have to do before starting decals and will have to gloss coat that part again.

Ready to start decals on this. My previously planned airframe to depict has had to go out of the window because I forgot to bring some 1/144 scale 24" raf serials to uni and picked up 36" ones instead. Thankfully I have a few other serials I printed along with the canopy decals when I repainted an Amercom diecast Valiant, by rearranging them there is one suitable airframe I can depict, the ill-fated WZ363.

I cut out the canopy decal, it just needs some decal film applying before I can use it. I've bent the decal approximately to shape, it sounds reasonable that doing this before applying decal film may help it adhere to the curvature of the model better. I have two spares just in case. Hopefully I won't need to print some more which would mean delaying finishing this for another week.

The bomb aimer's window was painted by hand with a few strips of masking tape

For now though, I should probably do some work for the last exam of first year which is tomorrow.

With a past paper completed I decided to take a break and put some decals on the Valiant.

Roundels and fin flashes are from Mark1 Decals. I had to cut down the largest fin flash meant for a Victor to get something resembling what should be applied to a Valiant. It's a bit underscale but this build isn't about 100% accuracy. The roundels are overscale due to being printed for 1/144 rather than 1/148. I'm pleased with how the canopy decal performed, it's gone on well and without fuss.

While applying decals I realised I'd missed the black patches at the wing roots. These will be added at some point

The Valiant has an identity! It has become WZ363. I've also painted in a lot more details all over the model. Sizing isn't too accurate but that's not a concern on such an old kit.

More of my home printed decals were used. With a generous application of decal film they all worked well.

I previously mentioned the sad ending to the real WZ363. It crashed in May 1964, diving into the ground at a 70° angle following an overshoot with the tragic loss of the entire crew. The cause of the crash was never definitively determined, although the most likely theory is to do with a control malfunction in the tailplane.

This is what a 70° dive looks like. Horrific.

That's looking really neat, Adam. I remember building the Matchbox Fury after my first year exams, which back in the early seventies exams  were later than they are today (terms, not semesters).

It's nice to have a little project to keep your hand in. I enjoyed your glider project, looks much more interesting than anything I did at uni, either as a student or a lecturer. I hope the exams have gone well, not much fun. Exam time is never much fun, and since retirement I have definitely not missed the joys of marking.

Disaster! I was putting a varnish over the model to seal the decals, but I caught the nose on my hand and ruined the paint there. I'll need to respray that part of the model.

And finally, I've gotten around to fixing the damaged paint on the nose. It's not perfect but it looks ok now. I'm very pleased with the result on this kit despite its age.

It's close enough to 1/144 to go on my 1/144 V Force shelf
