Hawker's Kestrel, Harrier, Hind, Hurricane Mk1, Hunters FGA9 and T7...

The Hind needs a new radiator, I built-up the cut back radiator core and made a buck to mould a new outer shell from a nice big wooden clothes peg.

A new cover is placed on the underside.

16499478720378513125682260264378.jpg

And some tidying up was needed of the wings and fuselage tail junction to obtain the smooth tail to fuselage affect.

This work ensured I'd be happy with the Hind's hind end situation today. :)

The Kestrel's strakes were reduced and tidied up and the nose camera bay begun.

1650034279259363445878087120089.jpg

In this shot the nose camera site is shown and at the tail can be seen the extended tail where its parachute will sit.

16500346744338769874792665358677.jpg

Quite a lot of the much needed attention can go on since the basics are now in place.

I have been making new transfers for the Kestrel too.

Fuel and ground transfers and the PSI stickers for the outrigger legs have been produced too.

The Hunter's cockpit has been fitted with rudder pedals and side and centre consoles to be filled with switches and levers and the nose unit is now attached to the rest of the fuselage.

16500367897914961175088711129885.jpgo

Now I have the nose attached I can begin to tackle the undersized 'area ruled bulge'

 behind the cockpit.

Hawkers shared their expertise of this little understood situation with English Electric who were engaged in producing their two seat trainer.

When I got the chance to look at the closed up fuselage I could clearly see the bulge was too small behind the canopy junction.

The cockpit faring is basically too slender, maybe Matchbox couldn't manage the curve down to the fuselage on the famously small size injection moulding machine they used which explains those three or two colour kits.

Study of many photos shows that it bulges all over which I tried to build up with plastic disaster plaster, PPP,which just doesn't have the stones for the task.

16502196197525897796507299574623.jpg

My bad, my mistake so this morning I dug it all out with a thumbnail.

Later today my Easter Bank Holiday will include trying again with a more robust, foldable filler.

Probably Humbrol, because the Squadron stuff I sent off for on the bay arrived rock hard in the tube.😲

More laters mayhap.

We have grey Humbrol filler drying out naturally at the mo', looks ok so far.

On the Hind I found that the clear Sellotapealike was too slippy to keep its coat of brushed out aluminium Vallejo paint and allow it to brush flat.

16502196853615076317433407272268.jpg

Simple cure to that, a single coat of Tamiya TS-90 flat gives the slippy surface some thing to grip on.

16502197283338702222187575924025.jpg

To tomorrow we'll see if that worked when I try a brushing.

I don't want a metallic looking surface for the fabric surfaces, brushed out gently should give a flat unmarked look to it.

Meantime I have been setting out the cable run holes down the fuselage and have begun drawing up the bomb carriers to sit under the wings.

The various bumps and holes along the nose have begun being added and at the moment it feels like a decent model is coming along.

And over here.

16502198516897203152254977805231.jpg

The nose has been reproduced with a sandable skin of superglue to catch the proper profile.

This morning I have added the heat deflector panels behind the hot effluxes too.

Sadly no pictures here yet but soon might get some done.

If anyone wonders what drives me regarding the T7

Hawker_Hunter_T7,_UK_-_Air_Force_AN13524

P1010404.jpg

The Matchbox shape is close but too thin, Hawkers fairing sits above and around the fuselage unit but the Lesney fairing sits within the fuselage instead of proud of it

16500341578581424101843763472081.jpg

I have had  to emphasise the cutaway beneath the cockpit sill and now I am hoping the filler can be sanded to leave an oversized fairing bulge.

full?d=1521488304

We'll see.

P1010405.jpg

I hope these links work, not something I am any good at, linking...

p.s. the filler is still too soft, I will have another go on the morrow.

To my eyes the two-seat hunter lacks some of the elegance of the single seater; which is surely the ‘E-type’ of aircraft.

That said tho’ I do like the look of the windscreen; which to anthropomorphise for a mo’ makes it look ever so slightly crosseyed :D

I do respect the way you slap filler on Bill, confident in your ability (amply demonstrated many times) to file and sand it back to  capture a multi-curvaceous look.  That’s exactly the sort of craftsmanship that both frightens and eludes me!

You understand that the shape is placidly sitting inside, captured in the filler don't you.

Wasn't it Michelangelo that said he attacked the marble with the hammer until the horse was released?

P1010404.jpg

Anyway try though I may Humbrol's filler keeps shedding horrible flakelets under the cosh of gentle sanding and so refuses to smooth out.

16506578175654071045322567989286.jpg

If I don't get it right in a couple of days I'll hie me awa to Dolgellau for some proper technical filler and that will be Hunter One sorted-ish.

I fitted the Kestrel's heat deflector plates behind the 'hot' nozzles the added the tailplanes and made the antispin parachute pod behind the fin and rudder.

P1010407.jpg

The Kestrel has been metalised with a Tamiya spray on silver, initially as a base, disclosing finish but in fact it looks very good as High Speed Silver for the tripartite squadron unit so it may end up as principal finish with added alternate silver panels sprayed round.

Quite pleased with it really.

I will attempt a photo tomorrow Heather, in the dark too. 🤬

And the Hind is settling down for some greebling too, bigger radiator with hinged flap controls, control cable run layout begun and nose blisters being installed.

16506577312499038494359995739408.jpg

Airfix didn't add them to the Hart's nose in the original version (this one) but did when they recut the moulds to make the Demon.

16506576922591882899282213465807.jpg

Exhaust stubs were from @John Aero's wonderful tube pack, slightly flattened and Tamiya Greened.

Once left for a couple of days they were ready to be filed down.

They will be lightened with a scalpel blade to add thinness and fineness, oh yes the port ones will be realigned before I move on.

I just bought a Demon with a view to hack off the engine and 'do' the blisters but before it arrived from the 'bay I changed my mind.

It might become an Osprey possibly.

Or fester in a cupboard as stash...

I think I mentioned this already, but how about using Milliput?

All in all, nice progress with adding those details

Silvered

And a very harsh landscape to be terraformed no?

P1010003.jpg

A basis for change no doubt, where's the fine sanding pad, fellow?

P1010004.jpg

Excellent scope for Mr Dissolved Putty under here, so glad I haven't tackled wheel bays on this.

A tad of Mr DP, getting bettererer.

P1010006.jpg

Mr DP up top too, we'll get there eventually

P1010005.jpg

Much as I dislike scribing there ain't no way this one can remain unscribed

The inflatable intake lips were added from UV setting resin exposed at once to UV light.

Happy with them.

See, Butty, I understand this, unlike what them CARD boffins are doing. Neverless the magic is on a par with the techno boys and girls.

The Norman looks like a seabird I can't put a name to, have you tried givin it steriods for more bulgieness?

Pencil work instead mayhap?

I think the pencil work would look better on the silver than scribing (which I also detest having to do)

you know what?

I think that is well worth a try and if it doesn't work out there is always Mr Swann-Morton esq.

There are to be several slightly different shades just like the Kestrel in the museum.

P1100643.jpg

I reckon a silvery clear yellow base for some of it

Now we're cooking on peat!

I goggled the sea bird, and I reckon the front of Norman looks like a sawn off Gannet (the bird not the ..... you know!)

Now I'm not very good with colours, but possibly a little bronze or copper to keep the metally feel?

Today I lost a little bit of patience with Humbrol's filler.

OK not true, I lost all patience with it...

Thank young CedB for showing me these Swann-Morton type chisel blades.

I will be milliputting this striated (??) surface in search of that missing pony later

So, as promised

Milliput brought into action

16511528445495803786204348459520.jpg

Now if the gods play nice we may get down to the actual Hunter two seater shape after the 'put dries

I forgot to mention after 'club' on Sunday I returned home afterwards just a tad bemused

16511528895396900108526101035957.jpg

A man negating some of his stash said "£1?"

Well what do you think happened then?

Yes, it did...

Showing its age in the box though.

16511529400805240213514026268867.jpg

And what mark of Scout was this from?*

16511529742838661434382660067169.jpg

*Rhetoric, I do know what model that is from, I even have one in standby stash two

So I take it you have a main stash, and two standby stashettes? Interesting, I have one stashette in the spare bedroom that SWMBO thinks is the sum total of my hobby, the motherload is in the eaves. With patience its amazing what you can cram into a triangle. Norman looks like he's been on the pies, a bit of SIHRSC action will sort him out. Rag wing hurricane? Thoroughly enjoying the updates
