Lummy06
Hello everybody I would like some help from someone who is either an electrician or has built an led diode parallel circuit. I’m looking to make good and cheap lighting for an aircraft hanger I’m soon to build. I am looking to buy these… and I’m also looking to buy this so it is powered by the mains… However I don’t know if I need some kind of resistor as I see a lot of circuits have these. On the other hand,I didn’t know if I didn’t need one because the plug allows 12v into the circuit (I believe that’s what 12v DC power adapter means?)and the leds are 12v so are they fine to not have a resistor?? thanks Lummy06
BritJet
This should help take some of the mystery away -http://ledcalc.com - you will need to know the spec of the LEDs but the website produces a nice circuit diagram and gives resistor values. Hope this helps. Steve
Lummy06
Ok thank you what or how do I work out voltage drop?
BritJet
Should be in the spec on the site you're thinking of getting the LEDs from

BritJet
It doesn't give the full spec but at least with 100 of them you can afford to blow a couple if the numbers aren't right. On the LEDcalc website I would go with; Supply voltage = 12 Voltage drop = 3.5 LED current = 30 Number of LEDs = up to you Might be worth getting a few different value resistors so you can play about with the brightness of the LEDs Steve
Lummy06
Ok thank you Steve I’ve just found some with built in resistors. can you do me another favour ( sorry) are these okey to be safer with as I don’t have a tester? BritJet
They will work straight off the power supply you're looking at but with a resistor in each one you won't be able to connect as many as you would with separate resistors as the power available will be used up by the resistors, I've never used any with the built-in resistor and to be honest you would be paying a lot more per LED to have it. Most LED circuits only need one resistor per 3 LEDs so it's much cheaper to buy a few resistors and use the 'plain' LEDs. Make sure you wire the LEDs in the right way - there is a positive and a negative lead on them, resistors can be wired in either way round. Have a play around with the series and parallel options on that website depending on how many LEDs you want to use
Lummy06
Yeah okey thanks again I’m using this video: I think they used 6 led per strip being 3 strips that must mean 6 resistors. the video didn’t make it much clear Edited February 17, 2022 by Lummy06
BritJet
I've built that hangar as well and put 4 LEDs into it with a 300ohm resistor for each pair of LEDs;
Lummy06
Ok cool good work on that! HUABAN 10PCS 5W 5 Watts 51R 51 Ohm 5% Metal Oxide Film Resistor https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08MKYMMVZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_i_7BRDD05JHSA4JD638VRD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 it says I need 51 ohm 1/8 watt resistors. and I have found them believe they are correct??—————^
