1/72 MIG 21mf Eduard Egypt 1973

Hi All, I’ve decided to attempt this GB in the hope it will fire up the old modelling mojo which has been sadly lacking for some time. Part of this has been down to home circumstances which are not conducive for modelling right now but I’m hopeful I can find the time for this. As the title says I’m going to do an Egyptian Mig from 1973 for no other reason than I like the colour scheme. The kit is a Profipack version with etch and masks. I’m not great with etch so some of the tiny bits won’t get used.
I know absolutely nothing about this subject so if I’m making glaring mistakes as I go please let me know and please if I ask daft questions don’t laugh.

Here are some pics of what I’m hoping this will turn out like.

This is the kit I’ll be using.

Hopefully some progress soon.

Evening all, I started on the cockpit and other internal bits last night and slapped some paint on this afternoon. I used turquoise green by mig ammo and my first reaction to the colour is wow! It is very bright just now but hopefully a wash will calm it down. I do know how accurate the colour is, I’ll leave it to those how know to pass judgement. The kit itself has been great so far with bits fitting where they should without issue.

Hi all. I spent a couple of relaxing hours painting and decaling  the cockpit. I’ve still to put the decal on the instrument panel as I painted it tonight so I’ll get on to that tomorrow. The seat will be assembled later in the build. Tomorrow I’ll hopefully close up the fuselage. So far this has been a pleasant relaxing build, I hope that continues. I just wish I could devote more time to it as I’m really enjoying it. Anyway, here’s a pic.

Hi all. Cockpit finished tonight. I had a bit of a problem when doing a wash on the cockpit as it took some of the paint off when I removed the excess. Maybe someone can shed some light as to what happened. The turquoise green is an acrylic by mig ammo and I used Klear as a gloss coat. The wash is enamel and I cleaned it off with white spirit. I thought the enamel would have been alright but clearly not. Any way I repainted it and it looks ok and it will not be visible on the finished model anyway. The tailpipe was assembled and I closed up the fuselage. The fit was mostly excellent apart from underneath the cockpit but this was easily solved by some trimming of the rear bit of the cockpit. Tomorrow I’ll start on the wings, I’ve already painted the wheel wells.

I've had the same problem with a white spirit wash removing ammo mig paint despite a Future/Klear gloss coat. White spirit is a solvent but I had just assumed my gloss coat wasn't sufficient; however, I hadn't had that problem with other acrylics.

Looks like you have done a good recovery job though.

Those Eduard Fishbeds are a delight to build, aren't they :)

Hi, all. Some small progress tonight. I attached the wings to the fuselage and this is where I ran into some problems. Unlike most others I didn’t have a large gap at the front join but instead I ended up with a step at the rear join. So after some sanding I think it looks ok but we’ll see properly when I get some primer on. I’m not sure where I went wrong but it’s frustrating when the rest of the kit fits well.
Anyway here is how it looks just now.

These wing roots look all right to me.

Each time I open an Eduard box, I'm a bit afraid to give it a go for fear of damaging all the nice and subtle surface details.

Keep this good and  tidy work on and it will look great, I'm sure.

Cheers.

Allan @almac

My experience of these Eduard MiG-21 has shown that the tolerances are extremely fine. The fit of the lower fuselage part for me was hampered by the fitting of the central main gear well assembly. A hair’s breadth out in fitting can mean you need to get sanding! :( They are still wonderful kits, though.

Only use acrylic wash over Ammo mig paint. I learned the hard way. Still, Ammo mig paints are better than the awful smelling lacquers by other manufacturers...
