Lightning F-5E-2 under nose camera port details help requested

Recommended Posts

I am currently building an Academy 1/48 Lightning as a F5-E-2 and have just discovered the the under nose camera ports on the kit are not correct,  being stepped rather than a flat plate.

I have some photos of the nose from side angles and could muddle through the modifications required but a diagram/blueprint would be good.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a drawing/plan?

Any help would be appreciated.

Aero Details 28 has scale profile drawings of the various Lightning recon variants; on the F-5E , the lower nose where the vertical cameras were fitted, was flat, sloping up towards the nose from the nose gear bay in a straight line. On earlier variants, F4A/B/C, the lower nose was flat, but stepped, as you mentioned.

@72modeler Thanks Mike for reply. Unfortunately I do not subscribe to Key Aero so cannot read the article and for some reason the warbird information exchange images do not appear on  my tablet. I will try  my PC later. The Alamy does confirm the layout I have from other photos.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

David,

I think it will open OK from your PC, but not from here; I just tried it on my laptop and it opened; the article is  from Flypast magazine, and I think it has a lot of what you are looking for. If you need to know what types of cameras were fitted to the F5E, get back to me. Doesn't seem to work from the link I posted above...weird! I did an F5B many years ago off of the old Frog P-38J, and I remember having to file the lower nose to get that flat areas for the vertical camera ports. Wish I hadn't given it to one of my students- it sure was pretty in overall PRU blue with invasion stripes; had the last three of the serial in yellow on the cowlings. With the much better Academy kit, I might recreate that one. Good  luck with your project!

Mike
