robstopper
Last year, I was lucky enough to attend two photography workshops hosted by Darren Harbar. If you read FlyPast, or Aeroplane magazine, you'll be familiar with his amazing air to air photography. First up was with the Polish Heritage Flight at Duxford, with their Hurricane XII marked up as Josef František's 303 Squadron Mk1, and their Spitfire VB which is currently painted as a tribute to the earlier MkIIB P8331 flown by Polish pilot Piotr Laguna with 303 Squadron. 206667549_10165420616790302_7406701755149694057_n by Rob Harris, on Flickr 204865912_10165420616360302_7419538261097878300_n by Rob Harris, on Flickr 205740395_10165420616645302_8858126683660761666_n by Rob Harris, on Flickr 207862381_10165420616495302_1735025694355696750_n by Rob Harris, on Flickr 207852528_10165420616840302_9084372895867695018_n by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0779 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0773 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0721 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0706 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0556 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0481 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0470 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0466 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0462 by Rob Harris, on Flickr And then, later in the year, it was up at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby, with their Lancaster BVII NX611 "Just Jane", and Mosquito NF.11 HJ711 DSC-0848 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0874-2 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0880 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0964 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0965 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0977-2 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-1024 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-1044 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-1050-1 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-1055 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0012 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0040 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0083 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0160 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0171 by Rob Harris, on Flickr DSC-0192 by Rob Harris, on Flickr We had some of the same re-enactors on both shoots, and for me, they really added an extra dimension to the day. Darren ensured we also had plenty of time with just the aircraft too, so there was something for all tastes. As bonuses, we got to sit in the aircraft except the Mossie, so my list of warbird seats now includes three Spitfires (TA805, MJ627 including flying it too, BM597) one Hurricane and one Lancaster! I've been nagging Darren to set up similar days for Navy Wings' Seafire XVII and Peter Teichmann's "Russian Spitfire" PT879!!
Latinbear
Very nice shots of both events. I particularly like the black and white images as they add the age element.
robstopper
Thank you 😀 Darren encouraged us to think about b&w for some shots, as the scenarios, and particularly the light conditions we had at Dx, really lent themselves to it. So I shot in colour, then played with a few basic edits and filters, and he was right!

Jonny
Great shots, Rob - thanks for sharing them! I've been lucky enough to attend two or three of Darren's workshops, all at Duxford. He really is a briliant tutor, AND a brilliant photographer too! I don't recall him suggesting B&W shots, although I have tried it in 'post processing' and it works for many shots, especially those with re-enactors in the frame. Thoroughly recommended, if you get the chance. I've no connection with Darren except for having gratefully attended his workshops, by the way. What really sticks in my mind was something he drilled into us inside a hangar at Duxford ... try to avould taking a shot when someone is standing behind your subject aircraft ... it's awful to get home and find it's grown legs! robstopper
Oh indeed, I learnt a lot from him about composition. I think he made a point of using b&w coz the weather and light at Dx was pretty poor, you can compensate for that more if you go monochrome i think. I'll definitely be doing other days with him, you get such great opportunities
