Not a ship but a selection of 3D printed parts from 3D Wild to help make an accurate model of USS Enterprise CVN65 as she was in 2006 in 1/350 scale.

My LHS is evil...

I just picked up RPG's 1/35 Mk.15 CIWS and Zimi Model's 1/35 USN 40mm Bofors quad mount.

While at the Northern Model show a couple of weeks back  got this little gem from Peter Hall of Atlantic Models and the only other thing I got was a hand held vice clamp.

Nice! I've had the type II sitting in my in tray for too long now. Looking forward to the build when you get there.

G'day, at the risk of double-dipping, last November I posted an Airfix HMS Hotspur kit that my son managed to track down for me, among others. Hotspur is looking at me very demurely and seductively, and giving me that look that says "Take Me! And convert me into a Type II Hunt class". 😁 (Since we're discussing Hunt class vessels. 🙂)

       Regards, Jeff.

Stop teasing Jeff. I've been waiting for Ledbury for 2.5 years now 😄

Sorry, didn't mean to be a tease. To quote Oddball in Kelly's heroes "Have a little faith, brother,  have   a   little   faith". 🙂 I've got to finish DKM Karlsruhe first, I have trouble concentrating on more than one build at a time. But as I like to alternate scratch builds with kit builds, HMS Ledbury isn't far down the queue now. 🙂

Regards, Jeff.

This arrived this morning, haven't seen a build log so will get one going soon. I know the instructions have been updated since release. I think 15 sheets of Photo Etch in total. Will have to work out which paint scheme to do.

Thanks - I'd seen a couple of photos of the hull moulding which looked really impressive, then I saw it on sale for less than a Pontos upgrade kit delivered and thought why not...

After having an itch to scratch, so to speak, about wanting to build a decent size ship model, (I normally build F1 and Rally cars) I decided on the Tamiya Prince of Wales in 1/350 after a fair bit of advice from people in the maritime section, thanks guys :)

I'm slowly gathering the bits around me for an Autumn/Winter start as I don't model much through the Summer and I need to clear (a lot) of bench space.

After recommendations I've ordered a wooden deck from China, I've got hold of the Eduard etch sets and a set of metal barrels for now. I'm going to order pom poms and directors and HACS directors from Black cat and micromaster soon. Only other thing I need to sort now is paint, I see that a lot here use Sovereign paints, but I haven't used enamels for 40+ years, so I'm looking into other options at the minute for Tamiya LP or acrylic matches

I'll post a log when I make a start as I'll probably be asking a fair few questions as this is going to be way out of my comfort zone :)

Ian :)

G'day Ian, as you've already purchased the kit and some of the AM stuff you could probably start a build thread now if it suits. You don't have to wait until you cut/glue plastic. I would guess that any questions you have now would be specific to the ship and build, rather than your more general enquiries earlier.

Don't hurry it but I'm looking forward to seeing her come together.       Regards, Jeff.

P.S. - And I think you can claim extra Brownie Points for coming out of your comfort zone, and in such a big way. 🙂

Hi Jeff

Thanks for the earlier help 😀

I'll probably wait till I've got all the aftermarket stuff delivered, then start a build thread. I'm itching to start it, but I know I can't give it much time. As to your last comment about comfort zones,

You either 'Go big or go home"

I've  fitted tiny bits of pe to planes and cars over the years, what can go wrong 🤣🤣

G'day, I quite agree. My next ship will probably be all of a massive 5 1/2 inches long (142mm). 😁 A 1/600 scale Hunt class destroyer. Still, that's bigger than 1/700. 🙂

LOL 🤣       Still, I don't do PE but for those that do it certainly enhances a model.       Regards, Jeff.

Don’t be put off using Sovereign colours because they are enamels.  Use their thinner and you’ll be Very pleasantly surprised plus you know that they are likely to be the most authentic colour matches.  They are currently shut at the moment but given you are delaying the start - well worth waiting IMHO.  An additional benefit is the ease of airbrush cleaning.  I’ve had to use acrylics recently on an AFV build and cleaning the airbrush is a nightmare after having previously used Sovereign Colurcoats.

Hi Rob

Thanks for your reply

I haven't totally ruled out Sovereign yet, I'm just wary that I've never sprayed enamels before and I don't want to cock up on a big scale

Laquer paints and acrylics I spray regular, so I'm used to them

I might give them a go and test spray some stuff first

Thanks

I'm with Rob on this one. Colourcoats spray beautifully and there are no real tricks or vices, it's much of a muchness whether I choose to use tamiyas, Gunze or colourcoats; ease of use, functional drying time etc are not markedly different. They have the advantage (besides the colour matching which is particularly sensitive on RN schemes with subtle differences in grey shades), of brushing much better than the above paints, which is always going to be necessary on ships.

They have a good reputation in the ship world but I think more people would appreciate them in particularly the aircraft world, the high pigment density and satin finish in the aircraft range makes them really well suited.

Anyway enough of the stump speech! I'm looking forward to seeing what you make of the PoW. One thing I did notice and perhaps should suggest; diving straight in to ships with a 350 battleship and all the aftermarket trimmings absolutely can be done, but there are enough things about ship modelling that you'll find subtly different. I suspect there's a lot to be gained from quickly building something small and quick straight out of the box like a 700 destroyer just to highlight some of the issues that will inevitably arise. A tamiya e class or vampire for example.
