JeroenS
Hi guys, I finally, finally got that front panel right. Would you believe I stripped it down again earlier this week? Yes, of course you would, happens to all of us, right? @bigbadbadge's fine line tape really worked well. This is the panel, ready for round 2 of the blue. Some touch ups were needed. As you can see, I changed my mind again about the order in which to spray the colours. I found that the blue paint would not dry quite as fast as the white paint, which is why I had to redo the panel again. I had a mix of blue paint and it had gotten too thick when I sprayed it, so it reacted with the masking tape when I masked it to paint the white. So I stripped it, grey primer, white primer, then sprayed a thin layer of gloss white which dryed quickly. Then, mixed up a new batch of the blue paint and it went down well and thanks to the fine line tape the masking went well too. I think this is the way to go @Spiny. The tip at the bottom is not easily covered with the vinyl tape so that's a small piece of regular masking tape cut to size around the bottom edge. You can see that I needed some more blue paint on the right side of the panel (as we're looking at it). This is the final result and I'm glad that's over! Just a little bit of blue left to remove around that bottom edge. The vinyl tape really gives a nice edge. So this can cure now. The repair of the door went well too so I can clearcoat both these panels later this week. I can now focus on the interior and all the other bits. I'm hoping to get a lot done today! 10
bigbadbadge
Oooooo lovely front panel , great work and glad the fineline tape worked well, I do love the stuff and also use it for rescribing a lot as well as on the 1:1 models . This bus is looking lovely so far. Great work Chris 1

Especially if it's for someone else 🙂 I did get quite a bit done today so I'm happy with that. Chromed the roof racks and the "turret" scissoring mechanism. I used greenstuffworld chrome for brushing, great stuff. You just load the brush and more or less hold it against the part, letting the chrome paint flow onto it. Works quite well. I've touched up the wooden slats in the meantime. I just tried attaching the rails to the rack but failed. See how many supports it has? Right... it was really hard to get them all to stick at the same time. Frustrating. I'll try again tomorrow but I'll have to redo the chrome on the rails. The turret looks nice though. Let's try a dry fit. I like it! I've painted the cab floor and the wooden camper floor as well. Needs a bit of a sandy colour over it. I fitted the rear door, it's really tight and somewhat under stress. I hope the window will stay in. The door won't close properly so I'll just leave it open, it looks somewhat better like that. Dry fit of the interior. A tight fit in the rear. I foiled that tall door so it can couble as a mirror. I've had the BMF for ages but hadn't used it before now. I removed the masking from the underside and what do you know, no paint came through! I didn't see that coming so that was a nice surprise. I have 4 evenings and a bit of Saturday to finish it. I think I'll make it.
Stickframe
Hi Jeroen, You have made remarkable progress - and all of the highest quality! And, in short order - looking good 😀 Cheers Nick
Ned
I've been off sick for a while so I've only just caught up. Great work so far. Love the domed hubcaps, and good job on the front panel. Is it modelled on a camper that you know? Very jealous of the owner if it is. I used to go to VW festivals in my more youthful years, and would get turfed out of campers in the early hours and get sent back to my draughty tent. Bug Jam and Beetle Bash. Sigh, happy days One VW nerd point - it's not a T1 (Type 1). It's a T2 (Type 2). A Type 1 is a Beetle, a Type 2 is a bus/camper/van, a Type 3 is what bigbadbadge has in his pic, and a Type 4 is a fugly thing that folk used to buy just for the engines.

I do have one big advantage over you when it comes to the front though - the colour change on mine runs along the bottom of the windscreen so I don't need to worry about following the 'V' there The chrome is looking really good. I haven't come across the greenstuff chrome before - is it one of those which needs a gloss black base layer putting on first, or is it like the Molotow and something you can just put straight onto the plastic?

Nothing to it then. 9 hours ago, Spiny said: The chrome is looking really good. The greenstuffworld goes straight onto the plastic. I have 2 bottles, one is for airbrushing but I haven't used it yet. It comes in 17 ml bottles, at about €3,50 a bottle which is way cheaper than the Molotow. Mind, for the hubcaps I used Alclad which needs a gloss black base and an airbrush.

It's not modelled after an existing camper, but my friend would definitely like to have this one in full scale I'm sure 🙂 11 hours ago, Ned said: One VW nerd point - it's not a T1 (Type 1). The Type 2 indicates "the bus", though the version of this bus is definitely a T1 (made from 1950 - 1967). The current version is the T6.

I never heard of that before, we just called them "Splittys" and a T2 was a "Bay Window".

I know I have been into my dubs for a very long time and had not heard of it until quite recently when searching on Ebay for Type 3 bits and Kent getting Type 25 (wedgie) bits being returned as they were being classed as T3 , every day's a school day!!! bigbadbadge
Great work on those roof racks Jerons, they look sweet. JeroenS
Tonight's harvest.... The last panels clear coated, I'm happy with them! Gave the wooden floor another treatment, this time added a bit of Green Ochre. And all of the remaining bits which needed primer. All the parts got grey primer first, the parts on the left 2 coats of white primer after that. The Mr Surfacer 1500 white primer is better than a lot of white paints I reckon so they're actually done.
JeroenS
It's becoming a bit of a mad dash to the finish but so far so good. I managed to get the complete interior done today. I had to "finesse" that rear bench in, some of the plastic had to come off. When I constructed the body, I glued those body panels nicely against the chassis but apparently this is too tight, as is also evident in the tension on the rear door. The roof fits though so it should be ok. Just a little worried about the rear door window. And I got those roof racks sorted. They looked a right mess after I glued the rails. That will teach me to abandon my usual method of painting after assembly. A second layer of chrome paint sorted the mess. Now I just need to touch up the wooden slats where the glue melted the chrome paint. Front panel and roof tomorrow, wish me luck 🙂

JeroenS
Satisfying results this evening. The end is near! I started preparing the windows. The nice thing about this kit is that Revell gives you lots of choices. Slated windows, opened or closed. But the regular side windows are in the box as well. And what is really nice about these windows is 1) they actually fit very well and 2) they are mounted from the outside. Are you reading this, kit makers? I always do window rubbers with a marker, but my Molotow black acrylic marker recently gave up on me so I needed (and wanted) something new. I came across these Gundam markers in my LHS and they are next level. How they handle, how the paint flows, all of it. Excellent. A nicely shaped tip. For the side windows, I chose the opened ones, because it's different. The edges are chromed with the greenstuffworld chrome. Funny, as I was starting this kit it reminded me of my first build which was the 1/16 version of the T1 Samba. I wondered if, and in what way, my skills had improved since then (2018). Well, I guess my experience and skills have improved, but you know what the biggest difference is? I just have better stuff now 🙂 ... Courtesy of this great forum which thankfully is part of my modelling life now! Right, enough sentimental stuff. Insides of the doors, brushed with a random mix of Vallejo's dark and light greys. I used these paints a lot on this build, each time randomly mixing them so that no 2 shades would be the same. Well, for different series of parts, obviously. And thanks to the Silhouette cutter I recently acquired I was able to make some custom license plates for my friend. It's so easy to make a stencil / paint mask with this thing, I love it. The letters just need a bit of sanding when they have dried. I sprayed the Alclad gloss black primer because I just needed a little and it doesn't need thinning. And it dries fast. His name is not Jules, but for as long as I can remember we do call him that. Pronounced like Samuel L. Jackson's character in Pulp Fiction. Which is not the reason we call him by that name by the way. Finished the cab interior as well. And, there's the front panel in place! It all fits beautifully, way better than what I remember from the big scale version. But maybe that's my improved skills right there 🤓 Another big push tomorrow and some finishing touches on Saturday should see this across the line in time! I hope I can get the doors attached without any trouble, it's a bit of a tricky procedure.
Bengalensis
That's great progress, and very nice detail painting. I have tried those gundam markers with eaxactly that tip before, but never managed doing any good with them. Seems I will have to try again as they aparently work well for you...

For these types of windows with the raised edges definitely. Otherwise masking and spraying is probably better.
JeroenS
Getting closer still... I painted all those pesky little chrome parts like door handles and such. And I glued on the roof, after a bit of a struggle to get everything lined up. But it's all good. Looks like a bus! I put on the logo on the front because I couldn't help myself. Glued in some windows so I don't have to do them all tomorrow. Dash and steering column were put in before the roof went on. So... final assembly tomorrow. Let's hope I don't break any hinges when putting in the doors.
JeroenS
Hi all, final WIP update. I couldn't sleep this morning so I got up early and took advantage. I got a lot of smaller stuff done which needed to dry out a bit first so I could continue after we got back from our Saturday hike which was nice. I also glued on the wheels this morning, and I was glad I did that early in the day because I hit a bit of a snag there! When building the chassis, I glued the movable steering at an ever so slight angle. I couldn't get one of the front wheels on! I tried to loosen up the parts with some Extra Thin but no dice. So I thought OK, I'll remove the tyre and glue the rim. So when the rim was firmly attached I tried putting back the tyre. Which almost worked. Except then the wheel assembly, including brake disc, came off. Broke off, that is. Hm. Well, at least it meant I could get the tyre on. Then I tried my best to line up the "fault lines" and doused everything in Extra Thin. Then held it for 5 minutes! It didn't move after that but I didn't dare fiddling with it. That's when we went out and when I came back I had a spot of lunch then checked on the bus. My biggest fear was that the one wheel wouldn't touch the ground, but luckily it did and it looks quite firmly attached. Disaster averted! Then I set about attaching a whole bunch of stuff. The roof racks went on suprisingly well and I didn't break any hinges when putting in the doors. So this is current state of play, just a bit more stuff to do and then it's photo time. Just lights front and rear, wipers, mirrors, side and front windows. And some more "camper" stuff on the other side. I like it a lot, shame it won't be in my own cabinet!
