Grey Beema
For a Falklands Group Build I want to enter into, I have bought the 1/48 Kinetics Sea Harrier FRS1. I would like to build it as an aircraft that fits into my general theme of Royal Navy Aces or significant victories. With that in mind I thought there was loads of information on the web which would help me to identify Serial Numbers and Side numbers for the following aircraft, then I could look for appropriate photographs and decal sets. For all of my looking I can’t seem to find information that ties a serial number to an Air to Air victory. Can anybody help me by either identify these particular Sea Harriers for me (see below) or point me in the right direction so I can go and look them up? Unfortunately, having mainly a WWII focus I’m not very well up in Cold War aircraft and only have a poor set of references. 01.05.82 4.10 pm. John B (Sc)
I think Cmdr Ward also shot down a C-130 which was making a low level night departure from the Falklands heading W or NW? using a missile, presumably an AIM-9L .

wellsprop
I believe Sharkey Wards usual mount was XZ451 006 - however they flew whatever was serviceable at the time.

Thanks Wellsprop, I found some artwork online that attributes XZ451/006 as Ward’s usual mount but as you say, what was he flying on the dates he made claims? I’m kind of hoping that someone will be along in a minute with the definitive list (a photo of both sides of the aircraft, in colour, before launch and after recovery would also be handy)... Modellers Datafile "Sea Harrier" by Andy Evans cites this action as being undertaken by Flt Lt Barton in XZ452. Similarly, "Sea Harriers of the Falklands War" by Chirs Sandham-Bailey describes this action being carried out in XZ452. Furthermore, it states XZ493 "was not involved in any notable actions during the war". I assume since the Burden et al publication further information has become available, explaining the discrepancy.

NG899
Grey Beema, not sure why this passed me by until now but drop me a PM with your email address in it and I’ll send you somethings to answer all your questions. Do you have preferences for an FRS1 from Hermes or Invincible? Cheers Nick

In the end I was a bit boring and predictable and went with:- Sea Harrier FRS1 XZ451/006 801 NAS, HMS Invincible, Operation Corporate, South Atlantic May’ 1982 Which turned out like this:-
NG899
Very nicely done sir! Two small problems, both fixable 1. 451 would have had the smaller 100-gal combat tanks (those are the 190s) and 2. Would not have had a CBU for toss bombing onto Stanley airfield but a 1,000lb freefall bomb with probably an airburst fuse. If you PM me with your email I'll send you some colour photos of her as she was in 1982 for your collection. Cheers Nick (Noticing your strapline, I may be coming back to you with some questions about early FAA Martlets as flown by Winkle Brown, which is the best 1/48 kit to use, etc... 😉 ) Edited September 9, 2023 by NG899
