Fly Models Ilyushin IL-10, PLAAF, mid-1950s...

Recommended Posts

In removing the exhaust manifolds from the block I had some breakage.  Easily fixed really, but  beware, this resin is delicate stuff.

The machine gun and resin ammo belt is very nice.

Guns on, pitot tube attached, glass masked. I have to attach the gun first then slip the rear of the canopy over it, and secure it thusly.  Then attach the forward section.  After that, Attach thebrdaio aerial on top of the canopy...The dry fit of the canopy looks good too.

I've painted and attached the rear gun.

Looking ahead...the colours suggested...the underside, according to the web, is a middle grey blue which is jot what the profile actually shows.

I am thinking of using this Interior Grey Green.

Grass Green for the topside...

After I prime I will spot some aluminum areas and apply some chipping fluid.  Give it a little bit of weathering...

I also painted and assemble the prop pieces.

Particularly to bald guys with no previous use for it

I don't know.  But occasionally I go to my local pharmacy and buy Acetone, cotton buds, hairspray...I feel the need sometimes to explain to the girls there what it is I need all this for.  "Really...it's for removing cyanoacrylate and weathering model airplanes...."  Yes...they know the truth...

Ok...and now for something completely different...

A good idea of the colours for the PLAAF Beast.

On the bench...

And the Grass Green...very fresh.  I'll tone it down eventually.

Nice - that green looks rather like AMT-4 Green. Or at least what I use for AMT-4 (Model Master Interior Green). I do hope you're not having any problems with gigantic hedgehogs whilst you're working on the Il-10.

Regards,

Maybe but doubt it ever reached the peak of the 1980’s

Hi John,

I'm sorry to say but do you have the prop back side front?

How much I would love someone to publish a book about Chinese colours based on archive study! From museums samples colours range almost from RLM-look-a-likes 76 via 65 to 78...

Cheers,

Thanks @AaCee26.  Good catch!  Thankfully an easy fix too.

a good book on the early PLAAF (pre 1960) would be excellent. Regarding their ‘green’ I think it probably varied, being most consistent right from the factory.  The diverse Chinese weather and landscape made adjustments.

Yes...wellllll...I'm not saying who, but here are four current members of the Britmodeller forum before they started taking their hobby seriously...

But where was I...?

Oh yes...the Beast.

Paint is all done and I've tidied up some edges and attached the landing gear.  I'll add the flaps tomorrow and chip away some paint before adding the decals, varnishing, etc...

Maybe even up to 1970...75 when last of the Korean War era types (Il-10, Tu-2 and Tu-4) were wfu'd.

Thinking of the original Soviet colours your choises looks appropriate for me.

Cheers,

Easy.  Nice and thin too.  So careful if you take this one on.

Varnish tomorrow morning...weathering tomorrow afternoon...into the gallery by supper!  That's my little scheme.

Thanks Craig.  I am not too happy with the hairspray job.  I may add some more green back before the varnish.

This is all a learning experience mate, its not a technique I have used myself before so would probably not be happy with mt own efforts but I don't think that your looks bad at all.

Thanks again!  I think next time I will use chipping fluid.  I have had good luck with that, altough the hairspray has worked better too, in the past. I think I let the green paint dry too long.
