  • 3 weeks later...

Back at this one after a lovely week in Madrid and Barcelona. At least it's been sunny (for the most part) in Northern Ireland since I've been back. Anyway, all undercarriage parts have been painted, detailed and given a flat coat. I added some further weathering, aside from a light wash, from a graphite pencil to certain areas.

Airframe and remaining parts have been pre-shaded and smoothed, ready for the greys:

Hoping to get the greys done this week. Will be a race to get it done before the new deadline but I'll try my best!

More soon

Some good progress. The airframe has been painted and some panels post shaded to show wear and tear, quite a common site with the TPS. I blended in the 3 shades using a mixture of each colour. As usual, the MRP colours sprayed on beautifully.

Wings, tails and stabilisers also sprayed. Note the aluminium leading edge on the wings has also been sprayed.

Hoping to get the last airframe details painted tomorrow that will allow me to add a coat of gloss over the next few nights in preparation for decals. I've a busy few days in work from Saturday so will be touch and go if I get this over the line. There's also a great looking new film out on the 25th, can't remember the name though

More soon.

Yeah...just the wrong aircraft 🤪

The TPS looks great, Dave!

Thanks Alex. Well yes, no F-14s but I'll let them away with it

The final details painted on the airframe today - upper Aux vents, cannon muzzle, lights, ECM bumps and fuel dump pipe. I then popped on the exhaust shrouds and wing seal 'bags'.

Aiming to get the decals on once I finish work for a few days next week. I'll call it now and say it won't be done for the deadline but won't be far off!

More soon.

I'm going to lightly post shade the fuselage 'Langley' stripes as they look a bit too fresh. Hoping to get a panel wash and some weathering done over the next couple of days.

More soon.

I'm enjoying your continued progress updates on this one Dave. Know you said it unlikely you'll finish within the GB timescale but please keep showing us your work and the end result.

I was up early this morning so ploughed on and got the panel wash on. Excess removed after about an hour. I used an HB pencil to highlight the lines covered by the fuselage stripes. I then popped on the tail fins, pylons, arrestor hook and refuelling probe.

I also lightly sprayed some Dark Ghost Grey on the fuselage Langley Stripes and the walkways to fade them in a touch. Hoping to get some weathering done tomorrow.

More soon.

After seeing Top Gun Maverick last night and being blown away by it, I felt some renewed vigour at the bench today. Flat coat and weathering added from a mixture of Abteilung oils, Tamiya weathering sets and some AK pencils. VF-2's jets seemed to be quite grubby during OIF. After this had all dried, I was able to add the landing gear, ordnance, TARPS, fuel tanks, exhausts and the rest of the antenna. Wings and stabilisers popped on not 5 minutes ago.

Just need to remove the cockpit masking and add the various parts. If I wasn't working tomorrow, this would probably be done for the deadline!

Ps, go and see Top Gun Maverick!!

More soon.

Lo and behold, I managed to get this finished today. I was up early so cracked on with the cockpit parts - masking off, framing on, coaming in and seats fitted. Note that the F-14D only had two forward canopy mirrors as the centre one was removed to accommodate the larger HUD. I'm pleased with the end result and another F-14 ticked off.

As always, thanks to those who commented on/followed the build. One thing I'd note on this one is that I don't believe the resin wheels add much to the kit. Their detail is nice, but not much better than the kit parts. Just my opinion of course.

Cheers
