Jasonb13 Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Hi all... Delighted to see this GB is coming up, and delighted to see so many A-10s already! I decided to bite off more than I can chew, and I'm going with this kit... I got it to spoil myself for my birthday a few months ago, as I always loved the Hind. From what I understand, it's basically the Zvezda Hind V/VP with extras put in the box from Eduard to turn it into a Hind D. Here's what's in the box... So, apart from the plastic, there's painted and unpainted PE and some Resin and 3D Printed parts as well. By all accounts the Zevzda kit is lacking detail (no rivets for a start), and while I looked into the rivet decals, they were very hard to find and also a big job to apply, so I decided to leave well enough alone. I'm gong with the box scheme as I think it looks cool! And due to the complexity of that scheme I found some masks online for it that will hopefully make it easier, and not harder! This is a beast of a kit, even without the PE, Resin and Masks, so I really don't know if I'm going to get it done in the time allowed, but I'll give it a shot. I've already noticed some interesting issues with the instructions. For a start, there are no stencils instructions for this scheme (and another similar one), only for the others, so I don't know if that means the stencils weren't used or not. Also, the ordinance instructions only deal with the 3D Printed Anti-tank missiles, and completely ignore the full sprue of ordinance in the kit. I'm not sure if that's because that ordinance would only be on a V/VP and not on the D, but I don't care, I'm going to add some of it anyhow! I do like accuracy, but it's not the most important thing in my builds, so don't be giving out if I do something that the Hind D would never have! Anyhow, I'll start with the fiddly bits (ordinance, wheels etc.) as I tend to do with aircraft builds. I find when you get to the part of the build where you have to stick all that stuff on, it's great if you already have it all assembled and painted etc. Of course, with a Hind, the fiddly bits are about 30% of the aircraft! I'll see how I go, I really doubt I'll get this done in less than 4 months! 10
desert falcon Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Uhh something to shoot at for the A-10’s 😁 On second thoughts, not sure I want to get close to a monter like that Have fun! 1

Col. Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Well Jason if you had to chose any single helicopter as deserving of a place in this GB the Hind is a fine candidate Although the kit lacks the characteristic external rivet detail your choice of colourscheme will more than make up for that.
Jasonb13 Posted January 16, 2022 Author Posted January 16, 2022 Well, as this is a Ground Attack GB, I'm gonna assume neither the Hind not the A-10 are shooting at each other! Unless either of them is attacking an airfield! I really do love this aircraft, so I hope I can do it justice. At the moment I'm kinda paralysed by where to start and what to do next, so I'm getting nothing done! 🙄 1
Col. Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 I think your plan to start with those 3D printed missiles and smaller parts such as the wheels is a good one Jason. So long as you don't go beyond the 25% point before 22nd of course 1

So long as you don't go beyond the 25% point before 22nd of course Don't worry, I won't get anywhere near 25% before Saturday! But that said, I do want to thank you again for allowing me (and a couple of others) to start early, it really does help and it's much appreciated. I've always taken the 25% rule to apply to kits that maybe you started ages ago and have been sitting in a box since, so stretching it to also include starting early is very generous of you! 1

Ultimately I want to see people getting their models built and enjoying that process along the way so if making maximum use of the 25% rule facilitates that it is all for the good in my opinion 1
Jasonb13 Posted January 16, 2022 Author Posted January 16, 2022 Just now, Col. said: Ultimately I want to see people getting their models built and enjoying that process along the way so if making maximum use of the 25% rule facilitates that it is all for the good in my opinion Couldn't agree more!
Jasonb13 Posted January 17, 2022 Author Posted January 17, 2022 So, a little bit done. Firstly, choosing the ordinance I'm going to use, anti-tank missiles and rockets, with some drilling done on the rocket pods to make the hole look a little deeper... ] Then starting to add the PE to the Anti-Tank missiles/rails... And also the Resin/PE Chaff Dispensers... It's a start at least! 5
psdavidson Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 Watching with interest. I have this on pre-order for the imminent re-release. /P 1
Wings unlevel Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 What a great beastie to build. Looking forward to watching it take shape. 1
Jasonb13 Posted January 18, 2022 Author Posted January 18, 2022 Thanks everyone. Yep, it's a huge one alright, especially when you add in the rotors! It's a shame there's so little detail on the fuselage, but I'll live with it!
Jasonb13 Posted January 29, 2022 Author Posted January 29, 2022 Hmmm... So I picked a hell of a model/GB to lose all interest in modelling with! I barely have enough time to finish it, and I'll definitely not have enough time if I don't work on it! So, after doing very little over the last week or two, I've decided to try to get this kick-started by leaving the bits and pieces alone for a while and start where most kits start, with the cockpit. I'm hoping that might get thing moving, we'll see! 1
Col. Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 Sorry to learn you're short of free time and mojo Jason but we'll do our best to keep you motivated if that helps 1
Jasonb13 Posted January 30, 2022 Author Posted January 30, 2022 Thanks Col! I've started on the cockpit. I have to say, this kit doesn't live up to my experience with Eduard kits. Not the plastic, I know that's not Eduard, but the Instructions. I've already mentioned them ignoring any ordinance in the kit, and not being clear about whether two of the schemes even have any stencils or not. On top of that, I've also noticed that the paint callouts in the scheme are really not clear, and that's not helpful with some of the very complicated schemes. And even worse, when I started on the cockpit I found out that there are steps on page 2 that need to be done before steps on page 1 are done. In fact, the steps on page 2 couldn't be done if you'd done the steps on page 1 first. Thankfully I'd turned over the page and noticed it. So I'm working through the cockpit instructions, trying to make sense of them and deciding which steps to do first, and which PE needs to be added before paint. But at least I'm working! 2
Col. Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 Perhaps a look on Scalemates will give you the Zvezda instructions? No idea if they are any clearer but always worth a try 1
Jasonb13 Posted January 30, 2022 Author Posted January 30, 2022 Not a bad idea Col! I also have looked at the Eduard site for the instructions for the PE that comes with the kit, as some of the PE sets were released separately as well. Anyhow, it might take a bit of deciphering, but at least I'm building! Here's some PE progress... I think that's all the unpainted PE I can add, so that kinda means it's time for some primer next. 3
Jasonb13 Posted January 30, 2022 Author Posted January 30, 2022 Hmmm... My photos aren't displaying for some reason, though a quick search shows a thread regarding issues with Village Photos. Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon?

Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon? Ditto for me but it seems to have resolved itself. Really looking forward to seeing that colour scheme on the model. I did do a hind of my own for the helicopter gb in 2020. Peruvian colours, as far as I could tell most of the stencils seem to have been overpainted on the real thing and the tail rotor warning markings were the only ones I fitted. My single biggest problem with hinds is that there are just too many cool schemes for it.
