neil5208 Posted January 14, 2022 Share Posted January 14, 2022 (edited) So the first finish of the year is Airfix's Bristol Beaufort, a very nice kit that built up well except the mistake I made using the wrong turret fairing so my turret is a bit lower than it should be and I separated the clear parts from the sprue several months before fitting and I had problems getting a good fit. Made as a Malta based Mk1A circa 1942 using the Xrtadecal sheet and 2 resin guns added. Painted with Tamiya, Mr hobby and Vallejo acrylics, weathered with Flory Dark Dirt wash and Mig Ammo powders. There has been some comment on the WIP that these particular colours may be incorrect but I like the look. As usual all comments welcome. Beaufort is slightly smaller than the Beaufighter. Chris On the Beaufigther I used Tamiya copper, on the Beaufort I used Tamiya XF56 then weathered with dark rust powder. dogsbody Posted January 14, 2022 Share Posted January 14, 2022 Yeah, it's a difficult thing to do, trying to get that burnt metal look. I've been trying for decades with only a few that looked okay. So much depends on how long they were on the engine. If relatively new, then not much staining. If older, then probably a darker stain. On the subject of the collector rings, you could perhaps brush a little pencil graphite on to them. That will burnish them a bit and add a metallic effect. Mig88 Posted January 15, 2022 Share Posted January 15, 2022 Lovely job and finish with the only proviso of the cowling rings and exhausts that others have commented on. Well done! In the case of Beaufighters, the rings and exhuasts were actually painted a blackish colour that rapidly weathered so I painted those I have built satin black and then dry-brushed silver and bronze. In this case, and in those of the types depicted in the photos, I would have skipped the black and painted them aluminum and dry-brushed bronze and some burnt metal colour to get the effect. dogsbody Posted January 15, 2022 Share Posted January 15, 2022 The collector rings were painted black to cover the glow of hot metal on aircraft that flew at night or in low-light conditions. Later versions of the collector ring had an extra front section added that was spaced ahead of the ring, to divert cooler air over the outer surface of the ring to help reduce the glow.
