Guerre d'Algérie...1/48 Vought F4U-7 Corsair, Aviation Navale

Recommended Posts

#2/2022

After the P-40K, my dad has already finished the next bird in 2022.
Revell boxing of the Hasegawa F4U-7 kit, decals from MDC(Model Design Constructions) and the kit, wheels from Reskit, camo done with Gunze H54 Navy Blue mixed with a touch of blue, EZ line for antenna wires and brake lines, scratchbuilt weapon switches on the IB cover, late style K-14 gunsight taken from a Hobbycraft F8F, "T" shaped antenna on the belly from the sparesbox, triangle antenna on the spine done with plastic sheet because the kit´s one was too small, belly whip antennas with plastic rods. The French Corsairs in the Maghreb usually had a bomb rack on the belly too. But didn´t find a good close-up pic to recreate it.

Build thread here:

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235101163-guerre-dalgérie148-vought-au-1-corsair-aviation-navale/

The French navy made some good post WW2 use of the Corsair, AU-1 and F4U-7, using them in Indochina and North Africa.
Model shows an aircraft that served with Flotille 17F during the Algerian War from 1954 to 1962 and the Tunisian conflict in July 1961.

This is an excellent model in many respects, but I think what you have built is more F4U-7 than AU-1. See the link to Tommy Thomason's excellent blog on the late Corsairs. The AU-1 did not have the 2-speed, 2-stage supercharger of the F4U-5 so the cheek scoops were faired over;, since the Au-1 was built off of the F4U-5, the carburetor air came from the wingroot intakes, not the chin intake, like the F4U-4/7. Don't feel bad- Italeri screwed these details big-time when they did their F4U-5, F4U-7, and AU-1 kits! That being said, the Aeronavale used both types postwar.

Yes, the AU-1 didn’t feature the chin intake like the F4U-7 which was a sort of F4U-5 with an F4U-4 engine arrangement, a most confusing state of affairs! 😎

thanks!

Aaaahhh, you´re right. Only read that they had different engines but completely missed the different cowls.

Well, there was also a 17F15 F4U-7 with BueNo 133683. This number is included in the Revell kit. Gonna try to remove the AU-1 BueNo and apply the -7 one.

Reini, apparently there was an French F4U-7 displayed in error as an AU-1 at a museum for a while but I’m not sure what the codes were and I daresay it’ll be a lot easier to remove the relatively small ‘AU-1’ decal and replace it than it would be doing anything else. In any case, your father is an exceptional talent and I always enjoy viewing his work. 👍👍👍👍

129378 was an AU-1, found two pics of the original aircraft and also according to the US Navy BuNo list this aircraft was an AU-1. As mentioned my dad will apply the F4U-7 133683 decals from the Revell kit. That aircraft had the same Flotille number 17.F.15. Found no pic of this one but it is included in this book by a French Author. The book seems well researched and it has profiles of both 17F15 aircraft, the AU-1 and the F4U-7.

French Corsairs are a bit confusing. Often several Corsairs wore the same Flotille number, AU-1 and F4U-7, during the years.

He already removed the AU-1 decals and applied some new blue paint. The correction should be finished in a few days.

That's a superb job of a Corsair, the attention to detail with the scuff marks and wear and tear is incredible, love it.
