Lord Riot
Time to start a new kit, and as sadly it seems the ubiquitous Hawk T.1 will soon be retired it can also be a bit of a tribute to the type. My build was actually inspired by reading Mandy Hickson’s superb book ‘An Officer, Not A Gentlemen’, which I cannot recommend highly enough. I’m only half way through, in the chapter about her FJ training at Valley on these very aircraft. So here goes, hopefully I do it justice. Obligatory box shot. Very surprised to find there’s also a T2 fuselage in the bag of sprues. Is that normal? I still have some 4 FTS decals for it. I’ll be doing the standard 80’s red and white trainer, with white fuselage numbers like I remember from many airshows. Might need some aftermarket for that big cockpit.
matto21
Nice choice! I'm also doing a Valley Hawk albeit in 1/72 scale. Can't beat the old red/white (and red/white/blue) schemes.
Deano353
I made this kit years ago good kit although I had just the one type of fuselage lol.
Lord Riot
Before anything else, I just purchased these: I can’t find any etched instrument panel sets though.
Lord Riot
The Airfix instrument panel bears little resemblance to a Hawk one …
Filler
That is a bit short of detail. What options do you have? Not sure I recall seeing much aftermarket for this kit. Are you having the canopy open or closed?
bar side
Normal to have the two fuselages - I have built the same kit & got both. Looks like the same decal sheet too. Nice enough kit but plastic is a bit soft & cockpit isn’t great. Did red & white 164 too!
Dr. Quack
Hmmmm - the IP looks a bit like a bedside cabinet with lots of little drawers! Thanks for the P M. Brass should be in the post in the morning. Q 1

I think the IPs from @Dr. Quack and those CMK seats I ordered should do the trick!
bar side
This is my 164 - pretty much out of the box with the decal set. I do like the flaps on this kit. I am just looking at a couple of red & white builds. The Jet Provost has just ventured out of its box & I got a Chippie for Christmas
Lord Riot
Oh that’s very nice @bar side! Can I assume you sprayed it? If so did you do the white first then red, or the other way round?
bar side
Yes rattle can sprayed. I think I light grey primed, masked off the wings and then sprayed white over the body & wing tips. Then masked off the white & sprayed on the red. You need white under red to make it look good. Grey under red looks muddy. The only other option is yellow prime under red, but that could go too orange
stringbag
I recommend the full cockpit set from CMK for the Hawk. It provides everything you will need including a new vac formed canopy. They also do a very nice undercarriage set as well. I'll dig out the sets and send you the product numbers. Chris.
Biggles87
Watching closely and hoping to pick up some tips. If you are planning a ‘ flaps down ‘ finish you might also want to replace the ones provided in the kit, which are best described as basic. Lord Riot
Thanks gents. I’ll see how it looks with the aftermarket I’m getting so far, there’s a chance I may need a bit more I guess!
Lord Riot
I hollowed out those air scoops a bit more behind the cockpit, they looked a bit too filled in otherwise. Medium grey cockpit, apparently!
Lord Riot
Despite the instructions it looks like one can get away with not fitting the nose gear until after the fuselage is together, which makes masking and painting more straightforward.
Lord Riot
Close ups never do my work any favours, but once I’ve added the etch consoles hopefully it’ll look a bit tidier. I filed off the raised detail and cut away most of the plastic purporting to be the throttle box and lever, then cut a small section of an old 1/72 unguided rocket to resemble the Hawk’s rounded throttle levers, and cut a notch in front for the grooves. A bit more grey paint and some etch and it should look ok …
Biggles87
I think the official cockpit colour is now Dark Sea Grey, but probably started as Dark Admiralty Grey back in the '70s. John
Lord Riot
Here’s my attempt to improve the Airfix instrument panels. A big thank you to @Dr. Quack for the etch set! First off, I sanded the kit ones then painted them white, with the aim of scraping off a top coat of black applied afterwards to hopefully look like instruments. Etch added and painted. Looks better from a distance! Dry fit, with side consoles added and painted too.
Dr. Quack
Glad it arrived safely, and happy to see it being put to good use. Looking forward to the rest of this build. Q 1
Lord Riot
These look a bit better than the kit ones!
Lord Riot
These clunky things needed sorting out, looked more like Lego. A bit of fettling and sanding, then I added some wire to the front attachments and made a few rudimentary rivet points. Hardly Tamiya standard but still a slight improvement. CMK seats painted. I’ll add the etch seat belts to the front of the headbox, I think I’ll save the rest for other builds as the moulded seat ones look good enough to me. Dry fit of the cockpit and seat. If my Posca pens come in time I’ll tidy the instrument panels and consoles up a bit.
Lord Riot
Next step is to bring the rear bulkhead to life a bit. The kit piece is just a flat slab of plastic with no features. First off, some plastic card with holes and rivets pushed into it.
Lord Riot
The instructions say to glue the wings together before cutting out the flaps, but I think it was easier cutting each first, it made for thinner plastic. No rudder pedals are included so I made my own. They’re only rough ones from offcuts and plastic card, but probably ok for burying deep in the cockpit.
