Is there a method to identify RGB colours of paints, especially Vallejo Model Air?

I normally use a spray can of Humbrol 86 Light Olive for some of my painting; however, the cost has risen to £6.29 and I cannot afford that now ( No comments about pricing please!)  The markings on the can state the RGB is 100, 105, 83.  which leads me to ask if other paints can be identified by the RGB colours?

I have quite a lot of Vallejo Model Air paints and wondered if there was a way I could match the RGB of Humbrol's 86 Light Olive to that of Vallejo paints.  Any recommendations please?

There's a long answer and a short one. I'll aim for a happy medium.

(Almost) Any colour can be described by RGB coordinates although that is but one colourspace model and not one favoured by modern industry. There are variants on RGB in the modern world, sRGB and AdobeRGB being common ones. They give slightly different 3-number descriptions of the same colour, so one needs to be clear which colourspace model is in use.

Next is the determination of those coordinates. There's are variations on the right way to do it, and probably more terrible ways than I am aware of. To do it correctly, you need a dried sample on a flat surface, illumination exclusively from a source you know the temperature and spectral quality of (i.e. you need to know which wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum are there from the source, not just the average wavelength) and you need your sample orientated correctly to the light source, and a calibrated instrument to measure the reflected light from the source bouncing off your sample, and you need to know the geometric angles of this light source - sample - receiving instrument arrangement. The exact same sample will give different results as you play with any of these parameters. Thus, for objective colour work, there are scientific conventions to fix these. Some conventions have been more robust than others; illuminants have improved since some were colourblind in certain wavelengths, and the observer angle has evolved over time too. You can work with old data, but you need to know how it was all set up in the first place, or the same results will reverse-engineer a different colour to the one they measured at the time.

That's the right way to do it. It involves equipment most don't have, and a knowledge of stuff most don't care about. The health warning on sets of RGB values anyone may give you either directly or via websites is how they got their RGB values. Only last year a certain author conceded on this forum that they didn't understand colourspace models and the RGB samples on their website were just guesses arrived at by playing with the 3 RGB numbers - which you can do in Microsoft Paint. Probably few are quite this naive, but there are some who think it's possible to get good results from scanning a sample with a plain old scanner plugged into their computer then use the colour sampler tool in e.g. Microsoft Paint. This doesn't work. It still doesn't work even if the person tries to baffle you with some BS intermediate compensatory steps to change the scan. Scanners do not have calibrated broad-spectrum light sources nor do they have offset observer angles.

You might be best using one of the popular mobile phone apps. I'd still be hessitant to endorse apparent matches and still don't know for sure how they gather their numeric colour data - one such developer just asked me for mine* which if others did may mean at least some of it is reliable. It would probably give you better results than trying to handball this yourself without having to spend a lot of money gathering samples.

If you’re talking about shopping online for a match, all colors can identified by RGB colors provided the manufacturer has posted correct color swatches on their websites. More on this later.

The are “color picker” tools that you can download onto your computer or mobile device that will return the RGB, or HEX value of any color you point it at on your screen. This takes the guesswork out of if your screen is calibrated correctly or not, because Tamiya or Vallejo entered a specific color RGB/HEX code onto their webpage when they created it. That never changes no matter who or how it’s looked at.

The problem is there are 16,777,216 possible colors in the RGB gamut. So it’s not as if you can get a value, then say it’s “close” to your paint. Chances are it’s actually thousands of shades different.

There are some online color converters such as https://www.modelshade.com, which uses a computer algorithm to determine which colors in its database are “close”. Problem is it’s updated rarely and lacks many lines of paints.

Getting back to manufacturers posting swatches on their sites, one company that infuriates me is Gunze Sangyo. They don’t post any color samples for their paints on their webpage. Instead, they provide a link to their catalog, which is a PDF file. In my experience many of the colors displayed in the PDF aren’t even remotely close to what’s actually in the bottle. This probably happened when they converted whatever the source document was into PDF and the color gamut got screwed up. That they let this go is remarkable…

Hi Mike

As other have noted about RGB...

But,  Creative Models have a paint conversion chart, which has various pages and "matches" It most likely gives manufacturers stated equivalents,  but that as i said gives a ballpark idea of a "match"

It does at least give you some idea

http://www.creativemodels.co.uk/paint_conversion.php/manufacturers_id/9/page/2

HUM086  Humbrol - Matt Light Olive  + Model Color 895  Taniya -X-26  XF26  Model Air - 007  Revell - 361  RAL  6003

which come out as VAL007  Model Air - Olive Green , note it does have a RAL code as well.

the conversion pages is not that obvious, right down at the bottom left of the page is a drop down menu "paint conversion"

this is the Model Air page

http://www.creativemodels.co.uk/paint_conversion.php?manufacturers_id=2

One thing, if pennies are tight, buy Model Color and thin it,  as Model Air is pre thinned.....

Model Color

http://www.creativemodels.co.uk/paint_conversion.php?manufacturers_id=1

it's a larger range of colours as well.

HTH

PS  if you have RAL, FS595 or BSC381  e-paint have various paint charts

EG RAL 6003

https://www.e-paint.co.uk/lab-hlc-rgb-lrv-values.asp?cRange=RAL+Classic&cRef=RAL+6003&cDescription=Olive+green

this has various digital descriptors and then a page of matches with a degree of closeness

if nothing else it give an idea of what the colour is, noet that RAL 6003 is a very close match to FS 34095 and close to BS831C  220 Olive Green

E-paint also sell fan decks, the RAL -K7 classic is the cheapest set of chips that I know of.

Hours of fun await.... or endless rabbit hole loops.....

Yes. Measure Humbrol 86, and all Vallejo paints with a spectrophotometer and compare the readouts. And never use RGB for color matching unless you have no other choice.

It is an old thread, but I have a partial answer for that question now :) - partially because I only have 122 Vallejo paints measured so far.

Target: DB0085 | No 86 | Light Olive - Matt | GU 9.2, RGB: #5B5D4E (L*=38.62, a=-2.76, b=8.37)
Found a  match in: Vallejo (compared with 122 paints)
        DE00: 1.44 - #585A4B - Vallejo - 71.294 | US Forest Green | US Verde Bosque | FS34079 | ANA631 | GU 3.1 (L*=37.30, a=-2.06, b=8.10)
       100x100100x100

This is a pretty close match.

... re-reading @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies post, I should mention how and where I got to those RGB values from.

I made Humbrol 86 (and Vallejo Paints, too) paint drawdowns on a clear-coated black&white drawdown chart using a 10mil wet film applicator.

It looked more or less like that:

Then I let them dry for at least a week and measured them with D65/10deg SCI calibrated spectrophotometer (D65 is a standard daylight light source, 10deg is a CIE standard color observer, SCI means I included specular component inside measurements, which removes gloss level factor from readouts). My device uses d/8 integrating sphere geometry. (It means it uses a titanium white-covered hollow sphere that illuminates the target sample from all directions (letter d in geometry) and the measurement is taken at an 8-degree angle from being fully vertical over the sample.)

The resulting data were converted to CIE L*a*b* color space to calculate the color difference - using mentioned daylight (D65) white point and observer (model based on empirical data from measurements of average human color vision). The color difference is expressed as the DE00 value - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_difference). This was the data used for finding the closest color match.

Only then I've used conversion to sRGB. Not the Adobe RGB or any other RGB. And the two colored squares you see on the screen are your monitor's interpretation of those RGB numbers.

I know it is a bit overkill, considering commercial model paint vendors have batch variations larger than 2.5 DE, but it is still better than their label-slapped equivalences to targets they are SUPPOSED to be matching. Why?

Because this:

Target: 34079, RGB: #4A4E40 (L*=32.05, a=-3.25, b=7.39)
Found a match in: Vallejo (compared with 122 paints)
        DE00: 1.26 - #4B4D41 - Vallejo - 71.011 | Dark Green RLM83 | RLM83 Dunkelgrün | RLM83 | GU 1.2 (L*=32.11, a=-2.24, b=7.01)
       100x100100x100

The labeled 34079 color equivalence from Vallejo is not the best color match for 34079 from the real FS color deck in their paint range. It is actually way too light for all FS samples I have.

1956 FS34079 | 1984 FS34079 | 1994 FS34079 | 34079 AMS 595A | Vallejo 71.294

I’m curious what you do with this information? Unless you’ve used this physical method on every paint out there and built a database, then you can’t use it to obtain matches. Better to use the RGB value of color swatches posted by the manufacturer.

RGB is sadly not a defined standard, the colors can be more off than is acceptable for paints. But I agree it is usually all you have from vendors.

It is also not even possible to directly compare RGB between one vendor's swatches and another unless they are measured by the same spectrometer setup (which means: the same geometry and other settings) and uncorrected for web/printing. I am aware of only one relatively modeller-related database that does provide these details - https://www.e-paint.co.uk/

It is also next to impossible to match RGB from photo to paint without some extra information, like a good color reference card on the same photo, context, some other reference, or at least information about camera settings and date and time.

That's why I make my own databases. I did indeed use this physical method on all paints that I have and I do it because paints and colors are my passion.

For Humbrol and Revell I can now give definite answers since I have all their paints on their ranges (or all I could get in Humbrol's case).

Here are the paint samples I have for comparison so far (open spoiler to see, it is a long list):

Interesting. I too have an interest in paints, and as someone who uses mostly Vallejo I was alarmed to find their accuracy is way off in many instances vs. actual FS and RLM colors. This became apparent to me after playing with the ModelShade site for a while, and while an HTML HEX code is the same no matter what platform it’s viewed on, how do I know where the webmaster got his FS or RLM color codes from? With respect to Federal Standard colors, I know you can buy an expensive color chip book from SAE, but haven’t been able to locate an official color chart on SAE site.

Your list of tested paints is impressive. I asked my son, who is a computer science major, about coding something to compare a database of HEX or RGB values. He actually called Tamiya, and they’re sending him some kind of database believe it or not. So I started looking at Vallejo’s different lines to see if I could get a handle on first of all how MANY paints they make. It’s more than you think. For example, there are a whole slew of colors that don’t appear in their catalogs. They’re included in kits, but no color swatches are provided on their site. However, occasionally if that part# is Google’d a retailer may stock it, which begs the question how did they get it, and where did they get their swatch they’re displaying on their web site store?

My thought was to pickup where ModelShade left off. The site hasn’t been updated for a while and is missing many paint lines. Additionally, how far do you go? Include gaming lines? Candies? Metals? Metallics? Washes? Color shift?  Etc. How do you even get an accurate color value?

I put my full list in the spoiler above. I do have one full gaming line - from Army Painter - and I did not use those for comparison.

To get an accurate color value I use calibrated spectrophotometer with the parameters I described in this post and a gloss meter.

Metallics and metals - you can measure color but other properties need more complex geometry measurements. The same goes for color shifts. Candy also has a layered structure that needs to be measured in separate components more than the end effect. Washes are also transparent so their properties are more than just mass tone color. So - not that easy.

But thanks to my measurements of Tamiya, I was able to calculate possible answer to your question from February 19:

Color swatches on ModelShade do not seem to be based on real measurements. Tamiya does not offer paint with 0,0,0 RGB. Nobody does.

Those usually smaller brands who put in all of the expensive legwork working out what colour some stuff actually is (i.e. which are not simple colour standard call-outs - which many bigger manufacturers still seem to get impressively wrong) do not / will not post accurate RGB renders online for obvious reasons;

They (quite reasonably, I'd hope most would agree) would like some potential return on their substantial investment in research and not to literally hand all the homework answers to to a brand of generic high-street brands of paint so people just buy that instead.

It's not that it couldn't be reverse engineered by someone particularly motivated to copy someone else's homework, but there seems to be little sense in making it easy for them to do so.

Having spent a little bit of time looking into various paints the last few weeks I absolutely salute the work you’ve done to make it your business Jamie, I’d have probably gone insane in a day.

How did you ascertain the real values of those FS numbers? Do you own a physical FS color deck?

AFAIK   @Casey owns at least a couple of different issues of FS595 decks from different dates, (I know there are FS595A, FS595B and FS595C issues which have differing colors as well as manufacture dates) as well as other paint standard chips, like RAL and BS381,   as well as various books with actual paint chips , like RAF Museum guide with the MAP, chips,  various Official Monogram guides on US and German colors,  and other specific Luftwaffe books with chips, included.   Theses are the ones I have seen referenced, so likely there are more.

I own some of these which is why I end up posting in these threads as  I have them to refer too, even if they are by eye matches.

I wish I liked using enamels, as I'd not have to faff about mixing acrylics to match chips if I did, as I just use Colourcoats.

It's been a very sobering and a bit depressing to find out how poor many acrylic paint brands matches are to the known standards.

Yes I do. As @Troy Smith noticed I have multiple real FS decks starting from FS595 without any letter (earliest possible) to - and including AMS-STD-595 which superseded FS and uses same identifiers.

I also have multiple spectrophotomerers with different geometries to make more comprehensive measurements when needed.

On my response I stated which FS595 color deck I used as source for color matching.

Thank you for your hard work. This is great. Should be made a sticky. I look forward to your comparison of various color ranges.
