PK-064:  HMS Kelly (finished as HMS Kimberley)

Built largely OOB, apart from drilling out the portholes and adding a small amount of PE (mainly the handrails).

The build thread is here, if you would like to see more.

Both my ‘63 Corvettes are done now, or at least done as far as I’m going to take them at the moment. There’s always a bit more that can be added, but now’s a good time to halt.

The kits themselves are quite crude, with no chassis detail other than the one piece casting that provides everything underneath. The interior is similar, with the seats moulded into the pan. The kits date from 1963 though and are of their time.

The shape though! The Corvette for ’63 was a bombshell of a car, the styling was a million miles from the earlier car. It’s one of my favourite American cars. AMT did a good job of catching the lines. It looks right from all angles to me. I can forgive the crudeness of the rest of the mouldings if the lines of the car are right.

The actual modelling done by me is a bit basic. I’ve ignored the engine and underside on both builds and just worked on what can be seen. It’s the shape that does it for me here, not the oily bits.

The blue car is factory stock, the gold one is somewhat modified with a tunnel rammed big block setup poking through the hood, radiused rear arches and big and little tire combo.

I’ve thinned the wheel arches right down, shaved the screen frames back a fair bit and added new glass using overhead projector sheet clear film. It’s better that the kit glazing, but not perfect. Properly fitting moulded screens are still eluding me.

The blue car got replacement wheels and tires. The wheels are recast Airfix/MPC Mako Shark ones. The tires origins are uncertain. I used them as they have a recessed bit for adding the white lines.

The candy car got replacement rolling stock from the spares box.

The paintjobs are both Tamiya spray can jobbies, pearl blue on one, and clear orange over gold on the other. The paint went on fine. Both cars have had clear coats over them but neither have been colour sanded and polished. The bodyshells are covered in curves and sharp edges, the thought of cutting through to primer or plastic anywhere kept me from chasing a mirror finish. If I get brave later on, I'll cut the paint back and polish it up some more.

All the chrome trims, wheels and bumpers are done with Molotow ink. The bumpers are half their original thickness, AMT made then a bit on the chunky side.

Here’s the models…

Here is my build of the Matchbox PK-125 UC-64 Norseman. Finished in the markings of one used by the 490th Bomb Group, based at Eye in Suffolk. This was something I had wanted to do for ages, after seeing the profile in my Hacks - Utility Planes of the Mighty Eighth book, and this group build provided the perfect opportunity! My first group build too, but will definitely do more. Thanks to @JOCKNEY and @Rabbit Leader for hosting. Sadly ran out of time to try and do my Buckeye, but pleased with how the Norseman turned out. Built OOB, apart from Techmod decals for the serial number and code letter.

Good Evening,

Number 4 of my Matchbox builds and I present a 74 Squadron Aircraft done as per the box art. The Matchbox Decals were used and some from the Revell boxing which I built this from.

PK-311 1/32 Porsche 935 Liqui Moly

My fifth completed build for this GB. The Liqui Moly 935 seems to be rarer than the Martini version so I was pleased to find that the kit decals were still OK after all these years.

PK-39 Northrop F-5B Klu

Hello all. My first gallery entry for this GB. It was a very basic kit but went together in a flash. Decals were slightly out of register but went down quite nicely.

Got to say thanks to @JOCKNEY and @Rabbit Leader for both hosting and providing encouragement and feedback to us all!

Flickr uploading is being temperamental so I’ll start with the second of two builds.

This is the Matchbox Boeing 727-223 in the American Airlines livery and is one of four airliner kits Matchbox produced around 1990.  The registration for this aircraft is N844AA.  According to Wikipedia the aircraft was produced by Boeing in 1975 and was in service with AA for 25 years until around 2000 or so. From then on it’s story becomes more murky…

According to Wikipedia:

“On 25 May 2003, a Boeing 727, registered N844AA, was stolen at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, Luanda, Angola,[1] prompting a worldwide search by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). No trace of the aircraft has since been found.”

This build wasn’t too bad and the decals worked fine except for the stripe around the nose cone.  I had to resort to inkjet printed decals and still had a bit of trouble.  But other than that a fairly pleasant build with a fair bit of filling and sanding to get very thing lined up and smooth, but nothing excessive or difficult. Any other issues I had were of my own creation and not a fault of the kit.

Last but not least in my Matchbox airliner double bill….

This is the Matchbox Boeing 747-200 in British Airways ‘Landor’ livery. I built the Revell Air Canada version a while back and as soon as I realised there was a BA version available I had to have it.  Only issue is that this kit commands high prices on eBay.  However, with perseverance it can be had for under a tenner with p&p.

There is quite a backstory to the real aircraft this is based on.  The condensed version is that it was sadly destroyed at Kuwait International Airport during the Iraq War in 1990.

You can read the whole story here:

Destruction Of Flight 149 August 1990 (Wiki)

This was not a simple build to be frank.  Poor fit of parts and a useless decal sheet caused no end of issues.  In the end I used inkjet decals for most of the build except for the red stripe which was masked and sprayed due to the limitations of inkjet printed decals.

The full story can be found in this WIP thread:

Nearly went in the bin a few times but I wasn’t going to give in.  In the end I’m pleased with the result.

Many thanks to @JOCKNEY and @Rabbit Leader for this excellent Group Build!

My pair of Lightnings are done now, with time to spare as well. No last minute late night panic building, just a satisfying conclusion to six months of Matchbox goodness.

The build thread is here:

... and the finish pair are here:

EDIT. I've noticed a bit of a blunder on the all green plane. Nose cannon should not be there, I missed that during a change of scheme decision mid build. Too late for these pictures, but I'll correct things later. Any other faults are down to me as well, I've just not seen them yet!

First one done. Really enjoyed the build, and as always, would have liked it to be better, but I learned a ton of things. I've heard certain people (not on this site) slag off older kits and say they're not worth building, etc, etc, but I found this (and most of the others I'm working on) to be a pleasure to work on, even with some of the fixes I had to do along the way.

So, without further ado...

And the second. As I've said in the build thread, armour isn't my thing at all, but I really enjoyed this build. I just happened to find a kit available that filled a hole in the build list and here it is.

(and sorry, the skull was a short shot, so only one horn...)

PK-603 Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, brown series 1:72 scale

Nearly OOB build with scrapbox decals

Built in eight days, that I thought would be this GB:s last

Painted with Tamiya rattle cans and Vallejo brushables

Built a little like B-17G-35-DL s/n 42-107100

"Century Note", 532nd BS, 381st BG from Ridgewell af (Station 167), Essex

I didn't do justice to this kit, as it does have more potential but then again it has indeed become obsolete and I lazy :giggle:

IMG_20220605_180117

Molded in three colours...

IMG_20220605_180135

...which were indeed brown green, grey and black...

IMG_20220605_180212

...but not these colours!

IMG_20220605_180248

Printing my own decals for the nose art was a first for me. Probably not the last, though!

Thanks a zillion to Enzo, Dave and Pat for running the megaevent 👍. V-P
