Anybody know what the boxes either side of the drivers hatch are?

They seem to be electrical, with possibly wires going in/out (where from/to?)

They are on the turret as well, fore/aft of the loaders hatch

Your help would be appreciated.

they are the housing for the spring loaded bolts that keep the hatches open it would seem.

Saw one pic that showed a large bolt head on the end of one of them.

But i've now found this link  that shows the other end

What he said.  Bolt head on the outer end, angled catch tab on the inner.  Are the cooresponding pieces for the hatch covers provided?

A semblance yes, but lacking a hook part. (In the process of being manufactured)

another question,

As I'm building mine without the skirts, (or some of them at least, not made my mind up yet) and the period pics show the mounting beams were sometimes removed.

I was wondering if the welded on mounting plates would have the bolt holes 'bolted', or left empty?

any tankies know what 'best practice' would be?

According to 2 former Centurion crewmen of my acquaintance, in the British Army running with side skirts removed was not permitted.  At least not in peacetime.  But this doesn't necessarily translate to other users.  They would only remove the brackets for maintenance.  So, no help there.

If the skirts and brackets were removed permanently then I can see no reason to replace the bolts.  If the removal was temporary then perhaps they would have been replaced for later re-use and to save them being lost.

I've not looked through these, but you might find what you're looking for in amongst these sets of photos.
