Another PK-1 Fury...turned Fury Mk.II, 25 Squadron, Hawkinge, 1936...

Recommended Posts

This will make the fifth Fury in the GB so far and at least the second using the Silver Wings decal set!  Great minds think alike...

I will build this while I await the new decals for my Siskin which will be in the 19 Sq livery.

I need roundels.  I couldn't source them from the spares or cash with any consistency.

All my Fury is in a bag 😆....sorry folks.  It came that way from the seller.

What I am curious about are any outward appearance differences between the Fury I and the Fury II?

I could build the training flight Fury I...

Or scratchbuild a bit here and there (maybe cannabalize some spats) and build a Fury II...

The web says the only real difference is the engine (525 hp Kestrel to 640hp Kestrel)  and it seems there is a gunsight on the Mk. II.

What say the Mods?

(The Mods have granted me my wish and I will be building the Fury Mk. II.)

The Fury II with wheel spats would make a lovely addition to the already impressive list of Fury kits on here. 100% go for it!

Cheers, welcome aboard and best of luck.. Dave

I bought a pair of resin spatted wheels meant for an Avia 534 to see if they'd work for the Fury. I haven't tried them yet

I have an assortment of spatted aircraft in the stash, mostly Dewoitine D500/510.  I'll see what I can do with those.  I also have an Eduard AVIA 534 bit I might not mess with that kit.

have a massive soft spot for the Fury

A lovely aircraft indeed, and part of the superb 1930s era that seemed to have spawned so many pretty planes.

And so here we go.  First, let's solve the 'spat' issue.  The spats form the Heller Dewoitine D.510 are the first to look at...

And look...the Fury wheel fits perfectly inside.  I'll have to sand down the pointy hub, but it looks good at first blush.

This lovely profile from Clavework Graphics shows the spats will need to softening up, a bit of rounding off as they say.

OK, now to the kit...

Part 1...the cockpit.  I am not sure if I will have Squadron Leader Paxton at the controls right now.

Seat is glued in place.

And there it is.  Happy 2022 everyone!  May your modelling (and year) be joyful and exciting!

One of my favourite Matchbox kits in one of my favourite colour schemes.

@John Masters you seem to have been a victim of #%##€¥£€%& auto-incorrect, the airfield was RAF Hawkinge, located just behind Folkestone.  Sadly most of it has now been annihilated, not by Hitler's Luftwaffe but by developers and the workings for Maggie's Hole, sorry, the Channel Tunnel.  A small fragment remains as home to the Kent Battle of Britain Museum.

I remember building this one a long time ago. Probably didn't paint it.

I have a feeling I'm going to be able to say this about a lot of kits in this GB, might just copy and paste it!

Best of luck with the build. I'm glad you've chosen to build the Mk.II, it'll look good with spats and I think you've chosen the better of the two marking options on that sheet.

cheers

Cockpit inside.  I rounded off the top of the seat, added some masking tape harness pieces...painted the IP grey and added little dial dots.  None of this you'll see.

I like this...provenance...

I also cooked up an excellent curried tofu, roasted turmeric cauliflower with brown rice and locally made mango chutney.

An excellent start to this Mk.II Fury John and that wheel spat option is a great idea. I've got two Heller D.500 / 501's stashed, I'd say they would be the same parts?? I'll take a look a little later.

Cheers.. Dave

Thanks @Rabbit Leader.  I think the spats will work fine.  Yes...I think your Heller bits are the same.  Nice kit too, if I recall.  Built a few along the way.

This is what I have done this morning while weathering my 19 Sq Mustang...

51815041072_c2b5c694f8_b_d.jpg

Minor cleanup of some small flash.  Be careful with the struts. the plastic is old and a bit brittle.

Prop in the background...

I'll start fitting the lower wing today and also drill the rigging holes.  From what I have heard there are gaps in the lower wing fit.  No fear there.

@rmcclure built a lovely Fury back in 2013.  I am using it as my rigging diagram...

Looking very much like an aeroplane now.  I have begun drilling the rigging holes.  I know...double flying wires...don't worry.  I'll do it.

I've puttied up the underside to fill in some small gaps.

51825535240_78ab23d48b_z_d.jpg

I've finished drilling the rigging holes and I have added the radio wire masts to the fuselage and the top of the wing.  I'll snip them down the size later.

51824814701_4799bd3677_z_d.jpg

I sanded off the moulded convex detail from the Dewoitine spats.  I have also sanded down the Fury wheel so they fit inside the spats--before and after shots.

The spat half on the left has been sanded down and polished and it still has visible detail even though it is completely smooth.  Interesting.

I have adjusted the French spats so they don't look so fancy.  I rounded off the ends and added that little dip in the top that the profile showed.

Before, showing the 'ghost detail' that I have sanded smooth as glass.

And after adjustment...

They may not be perfect, but I'm willing to let it go if you are!  😆

There always seems to be a point in my model building where I have built everything I can build, put together all the necessary components....and suddenly it is time for paint, or at least primer.

51828608739_8ccff3567a_z_d.jpg

et Voila!

51828988980_f07d1fe2ce_z_d.jpg

My little scheme is to mask the forward cowling areas and try to make them as shiny silver as possible, since they were really bright NMF.  Then the rest of the machine will be painted shiny aluminum dope.
