1/72nd Airfix Ju-87 Picchiatello, 209 Squadriglia, 96 Gruppo, Regia Aeronautica, N. Africa 1941

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

W.Nr. 5763 flown by Sergente Bartolomasi of the 209 Squadriglia, 96 Gruppo Autonomo was one of eight Stuka pilots separated from their Bf 109 escorts (and each other) and was captured in September in 1941. This aircraft was latter used by the British and allies for fighter training and evaluation in added RAF markings,...... many others were also captured and used as squadron hacks.

the national markings the “fasces” on the undersides of this aircraft have been applied facing backwards instead of forwards and are the same on both wings,..... which is incorrect,..... but well picked up by Airfix,... who provide options for the Italian markings only, or as above wearing its duel markings after capture.

And here is the model,...... there is no WIP for this one, it was brush painted as usual;

Featuring a different aircraft, from 208 Squadriglia,.... this is just  nice pic to end on,..... the Ju 87 s quite a beast of an aeroplane,...

Another excellent result Tony. Trust you to find an unusual scheme 😁 were you not tempted to put the roundels on too? 😂

Lovely Stuka build, probably my favourite Axis aircraft. I’ve a Airfix 1/72 Stuka to build, once I can find time.

Thanks Andy,..... yeah I like the Stuka and Ju88,..... BUT  like to choose `different' decal options if possible,........ the Airfix Ju87 is a very nice kit and I was impressed with it. The type is a bit of a brute.

Mike

Thanks Mike,..... very kind of you,..... I`m not too happy with the canopy, think I rushed it a little towards the end!

I have begun to realize that no matter what you seem to do to the canopy, as soon as you get close up to it, and especially when you take a photograph close up to it, it will never meet your expectation. Ive done things and they seem to be fine then out comes the camera and I fine dust, scratch marks, weathering marks I did not remove with enamel thinners and all sorts of small annoying things. I am beginning to learn, leave the thing alone and move on to the next kit. From there try and improve whatever s bugging you on the next one. Saying that, this way of working might not be for everyone but it seems to work for me.

Oh boy, that is really neat looking!  You did a great job on it too.  I was tempted by this scheme when I bought the Airfix kit, but will end up doing the snake scheme for nostalgic reasons! ;) Nice work!

Very nice Stuka.

In Italy we called it "Picchiatello", a play on words because "picchiata" means dive (i.e. dive bomber = bombardiere in picchiata) but picchiatello also sounds like "little crazy"🤪. Picchiatello was also the italian name of a Jerry Lewis character

The italian translation of group is "Gruppo"

Just for the sake of my language, I apologize in advance if I should appear pedantic

Thanks mate,..... I do like that scheme too,...... and have another one to build in those very colours! Will you be putting the snake on one side or both?

OK, now yer just showing off, Tony! Couldn't find a bare metal one, could you? Seriously, that's a very nice Berta, and in markings you don't see modeled very often!

Mike

LOL,... no,.... just a scheme that I`ve always fancied bud. Thanks a lot mate...... I did intend on building a different Italian one, but I lost the decals, so used the kit ones instead.

Thank you and sorry for the mistakes,....... I simply misspelt Picchiatello by forgetting the H,..... and I should have known better about the Gruppo,...... I have typed that many hundreds of times while writing articles and books,..... so I don`t know what went wrong there,.... as I did mean to type Gruppo,..... call it finger trouble maybe?

You do not appear pedantic at all,.... the mistakes are all mine and rather embarrassing,..... I have corrected the title now.
