shortCummins
From by experiment I first applied some PVA glue to the plastic base and added some (unused) cat-litter pressed into the PVA/paint base to represent small rocks… …and then given a coat of Tamiya XF-57 buff. This was left to dry for a couple of hours, the idea was that the “uncovered” PVA/paint areas would have time to “crack”… …well that didn’t work as well as I’d hoped, so I then sprayed a mix of Tamiya XF-57 buff, XF-82 dark ocean grey and Mr Hobby H66 sandy brown as a “base” colour. I lightened the mix with more XF-57 and sprayed a “marble” layer to create different shades across the base. To create different coloured rocks, spraying them made them far too uniform for my liking, I used a rage of vallejo “brown” colours, virtually every one I have, including: 70.819 Iraqi sand, 70.828 woodgrain, 70.940 saddle brown, 70.976 buff, 70.983 flat earth, 71.034 sand brown, 71.036 mahogany, 71.077 wood, 72.763 desert yellow, 72.050 cold grey & 305 light rubber. Each “rock” was painted separately, some had more than one colour applied. The “earth” was then flooded with odourless thinner and then Tamiya brown and light brown panel liner allowed to merge and spread over the base. This was left to dry for an hour or so and then sprayed with aqua flat. And then the edges of the base was painted black. Next I’ll be attempting the “Endor” base. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
81-er
That base was well worth the effort, a very good result. James
shortCummins
Some time ago I’d planned on making a large(ish) airfield base, half grass half concrete, and to enable the grass area I brought a cheap static grass applicator (from eBay). To test the applicator I applied some PVA glue to my “test” block of wood and then “shook” the grass via the applicator… The idea is that the applicator has a couple of AA batteries, you clip a wire from the handle near to where you want the “grass”, press a button and shake the material through the sieve onto a glued surface. The wire makes a “static” circuit and the grass material will “stand up” towards the applicator, it works reasonably well however, the “grass” is very small and gets everywhere! I used a mix of 2 types of grass, Hornby R7177 scatter grass spring meadow and War World Scenics 10mm summer grass, this is the effect on the base. I’d found a small(ish) stick and left it on a radiator for a few days to fully dry out. This was then cut to size and CA glued to the base. Whilst I was looking for the applicator and static grass I came across the readymade “tufts” from warpainter scenics. These have doubled-sided tape enabling them to be pressed onto the base. Both speeders had their riders and blaster canons attached and then they were placed on the bases. Next I’ll be taking photos for the RFI (when the fog clears). until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
Another quick build and paint exercise completed, I really have enjoyed both these speeders and the AT-RT, I’ll be looking at other Fantasy Flight Games Star - Wars Legion offerings in the not too distant. Here are both speeders along with my AT-RT Anyhow I finished both of these speeders, you can see the rest of my ready for inspection photo’s here… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
