Star Wars Legion 74-Z speeder bikes

Having just completed the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars Legion AT-RT, and enjoyed the build immensely, I’ve decided to build the other kit my daughter gave me, a couple of 74-Z speeder bikes.

51801021936_ccd9ff32ca.jpg

My version of the kit gives you two speeder bikes, each with a slightly different posed rider…

51801770695_e531ac700f_z.jpg

…there is another, older?, version of the kit that has one of the riders looking backwards shooting a pistol, I’d quite like to find one of them.

51801042076_125f9f2e81_n.jpg

Once agin there’s minimal building involved, its another “painting exercise”, here are the instructions, could be better…

51801391529_9c4032df08_c.jpg

Apparently its not very clear where to fit the blaster canon, foot pedals and power cell?, nothing a little bit of dry-fitting won’t solve?

However FFG do provide, for download, a very nice painting guild.

Next I’ll be preparing the bikes and riders for primer.

ARRRGGGGG ... !!!!     What envy !!!

As I am enjoying the AT-RT I also looked at this kit but did not buy it. Maybe later.

The boxes do not indicate the scale. In my AT-RT I have put that the scale is 1/48 although it may be 1/45. I don't know for sure-
Do the soldiers look the same size as the AT-RT driver?

I hope progress !!

I read somewhere that the scale is 1/47, so 1/48 would be close enough, the figures are roughly the same size so I would say their the same scale, makes sense as their both part of the same game?

As you get two bikes in the kit I’m going to paint each of them differently, one in the brown “Endor” scheme and the other white as seen in the Mandalorian.

Some of the parts needed some very small seams scraping, there was a little gap underneath that I used some sprue-goo to fill.

51801453468_f8a340e88d_c.jpg

51801697744_540f0504bc_c.jpg

51801453493_88e7ebc883_c.jpg

51801327046_5b14e43bd5_c.jpg

The sprue-goo didn’t adhere properly so I used some CA to fill the gap, before i can add any primer both bikes need to have some/most of the parts added using CA, firstly the rear section of the bikes…

51803449113_c8cc78ac91_c.jpg

To help position the foot pedals both riders were had their arms dry-fitted and sat on each bike.

51804144500_97f904c487_c.jpg

51804144480_7c0a68ddf0_c.jpg

The riders were removed and the power cell? was attached, apparently the position of this part has caused some issues…

51804144440_068d41296f_c.jpg

51802467832_3d0f867c32_c.jpg

…and the front fins positioned.

51802467837_cfd7d7a3ec_c.jpg

I’m not going to attach either the canon or bed-roll until later in the build, just for ease of painting, however I did drill out the canon barrels.

51803449098_ef6ba3cd94_c.jpg

Pretending to be a wookie, I ripped the arms off each rider and attached them to a coffee stirrer with a cut-up 3M double sided pad, along with the canon and bed-rolls…

Whoever designed these sky-bikes for Star Wars must be a Café-Bike enthusiast! (Mind you, Darth Maul's bike in SW I looks like an easy rider chopper...)

They are all so cool!

I’ve used Sorastro’s YouTube video as both a guide and reference to help with the painting of the figures, to do so I bought some Citadel paints, I’ve never used them before so I’m interested to see what their like.

Being primarily black and white, both figures were given a grey Stynylrez primer and then a white zenithal highlight was applied.

51805438873_3f7d3a2e26_c.jpg

51805680339_fef1280c98_c.jpg

51805323601_48e83f6261_c.jpg

51805680329_012bf96a30_c.jpg

vallejo 305 light rubber and 70.950 black was mixed in roughly 1 part grey to 4 parts black, was applied to all the black fabric, goggles and mouthpiece.

51804595047_48612b21d4_c.jpg

51805550761_c07ab2a1bb_c.jpg

51804595032_ed8c990949_c.jpg

51805666348_63fd0bfaa0_c.jpg

Citadel nuln oil was used to shade these areas.

51805937864_af2b0fb6fc_c.jpg

51805580116_8100f2174e_c.jpg

The armour was then given some graduated highlights with a mix of Citadel ulthuan grey and increasing amounts of vallejo 70.918 ivory.

51804695352_5cc08f4938_c.jpg

51805651921_94409d9591_c.jpg

XV-88 was used for the soles of the boots, the pistol and buckles were painted with the magnesium/black mix I used for the AT-RT and finally some of the “black” areas were highlighted with 70.995 German grey.

51805711641_e0519a905e_c.jpg

Next I’ll be painting the bikes.

As you get two bikes in the kit I’m going to paint each of them differently, one in the brown “Endor” scheme and the other white, as recently seen in the Mandalorian.

First up will be the brown scheme.

The brown base colour is a roughly 50/50 mix of Citadel mournfang brown and rhinox hide.

51809732783_a7e84917fb_c.jpg

This photo makes it look as if the paint is really rough, it doesn’t appear like that “in real life”, very strange?

A mix, 3 parts zandri dust to 1 parts elysian green, was used to dry brush these brown parts.

51810486440_8c1690a683_c.jpg

A mix of Citadel leadbelcher and vallejo 70.950 black was used for the engine, rear end of the bike and outrigger booms.

51810103594_8c1690a683_c.jpg

51810103554_1b75228dcd_c.jpg

This mix was also used for the handlebars.

51808827977_b50a9a3125_c.jpg

70.995 German grey and black was used for the saddle.

51809783381_03fa7d7440_c.jpg

Next I’ll be painting the white speeder.

until next time

to be honest I'm not sure about the Citadel paints, its probably because its the first time I've used them but there's something "different" with them?

They defiantly need thinning as they are quite thick, and with the underside of the lid being where to take the paint from you have to use some sort of pallet, not a problem really, in itself, but just a little awkward.

I'm sure the more I use them they'll be easier to get the consistency I want

For the white I used a base colour mix of 4 parts vallejo 70.907 pale grey blue to 1 part Citadel ulthuan grey.

51809795591_83a53125d5_c.jpg

To build up the “white” look vallejo 70.918 ivory was progressively added to the base mix and applied to the uppermost surfaces.

51808839562_3f96027caf_c.jpg

This base colour was then given a dry brush of pure ivory.

51809907578_49a3b12784_c.jpg

Once again the leadbelcher/black mix was used on the engine, rear end and booms.

51808839547_415f7cd2c3_c.jpg

51809907568_41a4705c54_c.jpg

The saddle was also painted with the German grey/black mix.

51809795541_aba6260e20_c.jpg

Next I’ll be adding some weathering to both speeders.

Yeah I've tried a couple of times with acrylic paint and others over the years and I always end up coming back to humbrol enamel paints, think it's just I'm used to get used to so fair play to you for trying something new.

And it seems like your getting good results already so the only way is up!

I use a number of Citadel colours, Abbadon Black being one of my favourites.

I usually brush paint them on having diluted them a bit (70% paint, 30% thinners ish...) with Tamiya thinners (Mr Color Levelling thinners does something weird with the Citadel paints (Ask me how I know...))

When diluted, they self-level quite well.

Cheers,

Alan.

I've just been using water so I'll give the Tamiya thinners a go

Now that both of the “base” colours have been completed a mix of Citadel agrax earthshade and nuln oil was then used as a wash for both of the speeders “black” areas and the brown bodywork.

51810352379_9f3b18d007_c.jpg

The bodywork of the white speeder was dry brushed with vallejo 70.907 pale grey blue.

51810114483_2dc9534554_c.jpg

To add some highlights to the black areas I mixed stormhost silver and German grey

51809046402_2d7a56cdab_c.jpg

Some wear, scuffs and scratches were also applied using the same mix.

51810001821_20b713851b_c.jpg

51810001801_5ab1fe2eaa_c.jpg

51810001791_0ec2707d77_c.jpg

51809046357_c83146f446_c.jpg

Both of the blaster canons were painted with the magnesium/black mix.

51810136308_64f40dbaea_c.jpg

The bedrolls were painted with a base of Citadel stormvermin fur…

51809067862_18ebdbac61_c.jpg

…and then given a wash of the agrax earthshade.

51812308493_cc75d695df_c.jpg

Citadel karak stone was added to the base stormvermin fur colour to apply some highlights for the bedrolls.

Next I’ll be adding some detail painting.

The dial on the control panel were painted red, and the other switches grey.

51811295782_941e8245f7_c.jpg

51811295777_aa7a307df5_c.jpg

I noticed that I’d painted part of uniform black that should have been white for the “Endor” scheme so I rectified this.

51812254266_05cbdcaabb_c.jpg

The bedrolls were CA glued to the back of the speeders.

51812638009_5ba2cb62b2_c.jpg

51812398293_56151afa1f_c.jpg

Both riders and speeders were then given a flat coat of Alclad klear kote flat.

The riders body armour was given a coat of satin varnish, as was the body for the white speeder.

The kit provides a couple of bases, as I don’t play the game I’m not sure what the shape or marks indicate, I think their “firing marks” whatever they are? There are solid bases and transparent stands

51814294306_0353432b8f_c.jpg

I could just glue the stands to the bases and then place the speeders on the stands and call them done however, it would be nice to make them look more like terrain?

Having never done anything like this before so it’s time for some experimentation.

For the white speeder I want to make a desert type base, to start this process the stand was glued to the base and then masked to help keep it “clear” during the next process’.

51814333706_d55ce45e1f_c.jpg

Both bases were given a coat of MRP-159 chocolate.

51814363281_385f236052_c.jpg

MRP-167 was then used for a marble layer.

51814363266_a17e923386_c.jpg

I want to try and make some “cracked earth”, I know that you can buy “crackle paint” however I haven’t got any so I thought I’d try to make my own, time for a couple of experiments.

First one I spread some PVA glue quite thickly on a scrap of wood.

51814597248_8b06860fcc_c.jpg

After 5 minutes or so I sprayed some Tamiya XF-57 over the PVA and left it for an hour or so, then I applied some more PVA to the opposite end…

51815211515_9ef764d5bf_c.jpg

…this was left for approximately 25 minutes until it had gone “tacky”, then I brush painted some Citadel air XV-88.

These were left overnight, the idea is that the “paint” will dry before the PVA glue and cause cracks as the PVA dries?

51816434244_c18efec9b9_c.jpg

As you can see the “Tamiya” has cracked most, the “Citadel” version for some reason didn’t crack at all?, so I’ll be using the Tamiya method for a “desert” base for the white “Mando” speeder.

Next I’ll be attempting the “Mando” base.

until next time

as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received.
