PhantomBigStu
Not decided the scheme, could have got the boxing I wanted online https://www.scalemates.com/kits/academy-12564-usn-f-a-18c-vfa-192-golden-dragons--1133362) but I like to support local shops so picked this up and I've been offered some from another issue, see what happens. Bertie McBoatface
That's interesting. What's the story behind the German insignia? Did it land on one of Germany's aircraft carriers by accident?

When VMFA-212 changed its name from the Devil Cats to the Lancers in 1961, the XO picked a medieval theme and the logo designers came up with the crossed lances and shields, with the Schwartzes Kreuz on the shield. I'm guessing the logo designers didn't know much heraldry, as the Schwartzes Kreuz dates to 1813 and is very definitely not medieval.

Seems when the Squadron reformed on the F-8 Crusader in the 60's the Commander wanted the insignia to have a medieval theme, so chose a crusader cross on shield over cross Lancers, nice idea though

Which is much closer to the Hornet's function really, light, fast, deadly.
PhantomBigStu
Done what any sensible person shouldn’t have done and ordered the boxing I actuality wanted in the first place. still least if I fancy a second entry I won’t have to look far. Anatol Pigwa
Funny thing is, I dd it the other way around: Bougth the Golden Dragons boxing from my local hobby shop, then went on to buy the VMFA-212 boxing on-line. I am keen to know which of the three Golden Dragons schemes provided are you going for?

Huh, I am very surprised the stars part of the US flag isn‘t pointing forwards. 😳
gingerbob
I was too, but I wonder if that was done so that with the speed brake up the flag displays correctly?
John Masters
I'll be using this kit for the next Hornet on the list, and with USMC aftermarket decals...

PhantomBigStu
Been a bit tunnel vision and forgot about this, now top priority build, painted some grey on and will be starting the fill and sand over the next few days. This will make the gallery https://village.photos/members/Stuart/F-18-STGB/713959/AE939F8A-0398-43FE-9FE3-0412F54C02CC
PhantomBigStu
Underside sanded and a few coats of light ghost grey on.
PhantomBigStu
Turned out I messed up and taken quite a lot of the port vortex generator out when sanding, cue several days cycle of trying to build it back and resand it into shape, very frustrating but got there in the end.
PhantomBigStu
Upper sanded and painted dark ghost grey, now for the blue spine and fins
PhantomBigStu
Masking the blue (which is darker in reality than academy want you to paint it) went wrong, almost done just a couple of grey touch ups to be done when I’m feeling fresher, then get the exhausts painted and the yellow stripes on the tail
PhantomBigStu
Done the exhausts, yellow stopes, cockpit bits and added a pilot, just waiting for some touch up black paint to dry and I’ll fit the canopy, which had a nasty mould seam that had to be polish out.
PhantomBigStu
Slight hitch with the canopy and had to do some surgery and sanding but it’s done, redoing the grey has to wait as I’m off to football in a few mins. Should be decal ready tomorrow Edited March 30, 2022 by PhantomBigStu

PhantomBigStu
Cheers, second session done, hopefully I can get the last two and the first coats of varnish and few bits done tommorow.
PhantomBigStu
Slight hitch with the last decaying session, some idiot put the star and bar upside down so I had to raid the spares, all the ones I could find where slightly larger so perhaps academy messed the size up. Should make the gallery tomorrow, done the Matt coat just sticking various bits on
