John
Standing on its own 3 feet: The paint needs tidied up, transfers finished off and a top coat put on. In answer to Andy's question about the oil coolers, this is how I fitted them: They go in at an angle. It has to be said that Matchbox instructions often left something to be desired. John
The old Humbrol sqaure bottle decal solution didn't make much of an impression on the stars and bars - the panel lines on the wings are historically deep though: I'm going to try the new formulation and see if it's any better. John
I just couldn't get the green cowling band to sit neatly: ...so off it came. No mean feat, as I'd used both old and new Decal Fix so it was stuck like snot to your pillow. However: Out with the gloss white to cover up the bits of green left behind. I think something in the region of 80 Grass Green is going to be the starting point for a match with the decals. John 4
John
Much better! Need to find some suitable numbers now. John
JOCKNEY
Looking great, thanks for solving the radiator mystery Out of interest, could I use that same blue on a Martin Mariner or Coronado ? Cheers Pat
Rabbit Leader
Nice recovery on the Green nose band John and a good coat of gloss clear should blend it all in nicely. Cheers.. Dave 2
John
For the first time in all the builds I've done in the last couple of Matchbox GBs, I've had a problem with the decals: I just couldn't get the green bands to sit properly so they've been removed - no small matter as I was going old-school and using Klear to seat them down. I've pretty much had to sand them off. No great but not insurmountable. I'll source decals for a different scheme. John 1
Rob G
Klear can be removed with an ammonia based cleaner - Windex (the good stuff, not the 'environmentally friendly' rubbish) works for me. 1
John
The current incarnation of Decal Fix shifts it as well, not the old square bottle stuff though. The other side of that is don't try to use Decal Fix on a Kleared model. John
John
...and we're back. Picked up a Hobby Boss F4U-4 kit - first time I've seen one of the newer style boxes: There are a couple of interesting schemes: and a reasonable-looking decal sheet. I've found their decals to be generally pretty good: Which one? Choices, choices... John
JOCKNEY
Great idea getting this kit for the decal option, probably cheaper than replacement decals plus an extra kit to build, result ! cheers Pat 4
Rabbit Leader
I agree with Pat, John. The Hobbyboss kit was a good choice and those decals look quite good. I don’t want to sound negative, however I’m hoping the white decals are thick enough when applied, I’ve had some unpleasant experiences of see through Hobbyboss decals in the past. Cheers and best of luck.. Dave
John
That's better - 20 Crimson band, nice and glossy: Decals next. John
John
*Much* better. The Hobby Boss decals are actually very good: Needs tidied up and the final parts put on. John
John
It seems to have taken a awfully long time to get to here, but just abut there now: The prop boss and fin tip are Humbrol 109 WW1 Blue. Next steps are to add the wheels and the guns, tidy it up a bit and that'll be that. John

John
Completed, at long last and after a couple of false starts. More foties in the Gallery: Out of the box, except for Hobby Boss decals for an aircraft of VF-53, 1952. Paint: Overall - Sovereign Colourcoats ACUS34 ANA 623 Sea Blue Trim - Humbrol 109 WW1 Blue Guns, tyres, prop - Humbrol 85 Coal Black John

Rabbit Leader
Great job Job, I’ve always liked the Matchbox F4U-4 and that one has turned out a treat. Cheers and well modelled.. Dave 1
