German Armour
Hey all! Received the Tamiya 1/48 He 219 for Christmas! Wondering if anyone would have any info and ideas for references and aftermarket. I'm possibly looking at doing a bit of scratch building on the kit. Maybe the rear radar area. Would probably have to cut out the panel and put a clear glass, I don't have any books showing the compartment. Any ideas would be appreciated!! 72modeler
Not my scale, but I recall there are some excellent aftermarket detail/improvement sets for the 1/48 kit. I think if you go to the scalemates website and search for He-219, you can see what aftermarket items were offered and kit reviews. The National Air and Space Museum has recently restored theirs, and you can see the restoration photos. Good luck- the Uhu was a very capable and handsome night fighter. FinnAndersen
If you really are interested, this is a mine of information, possibly also for your wish to do some super detailing: https://www.valiant-wings.co.uk/he-219-bundle-70-p.asp /Finn

This would be the best baseline. https://www.wingleader.co.uk/shop/heinkel-he-

I have a soft spot for the Uhu going back to a piece in a magazine by Eric Brown, who considered the Uhu underpowered, so bought the Valiant book for pictures and story - not for rivet counting. One day I hopefully will do a Uhu and place it alongside a Mosquito nightfighter. /Finn

By the 'rear radar area' do you mean the floored area in the rear fuselage with simple belts and a transparent panel in the fuselage roof? The NASM aircraft has this feature, but, as far as I am aware, this is non-standard and may be unique to this airframe. The Franks 'Valiant Wings' book covers it photographically - here is a little bit of it (posted in accordance with UK Copyright Law - pictures intentionally slightly distorted to discourage further duplication) I think this book would be your best bet as a starting point for detailing references on the He219 - it's packed full of detail pictures, often of the NASM example. I have two of the three Kageros, the Ferguson and the Daniel Zamarbide volumes as well. They all contribute very well to the He219 story, but have differing emphases and focuses on their approach. Crimea River
I was in a similar boat 11 years ago when I built mine. I cobbled together a number of online reference pics, opinions, and my own speculations to add detail and you'll see this in the link. Since then, a number of new references have arrived on the market as shown above and so I can not vouch for the accuracy of what I did, especially in the rear cockpit area. I recall that the biggest disappointment was lack of detail in the wheel wells - very lazy and unexpected for Tamiya. Some feel that the nacelles behind the trailing edge are too long and that may very well be the case, though something that I did not want to tackle at the time. Other than that, it goes together well and makes for a nice model. Good luck with the build! Edited December 29, 2021 by Crimea River
German Armour
Yes, the wheel wells are dissipointment. There are detail sets you can buy, either from eduard PE or aires? resin.
72modeler
I wish you great success in your modeling project, as the Uhu was a beautiful and capable night fighter. I saw the NASM's Uhu early on in its restoration, and what I saw was amazing, especially the sections that were visible that had been protected from the elements for all the years that it was in storage. The Smithsonian used to do monographs when a restoration was completed that a detailed description and photos of the aircraft in question- in view of the fact that their He-219 was fairly complete and original, as well as being one of the only two known survivors, I hope they will do a monograph. I also hope Tamiya will someday give us a 1/72 version of their 1/48 kit, as the Frog, Revell, and DML kits are all OOP and the more recent DML kit has the fit issues that seem to be a characteristic of their kits! 112 Squadron
In my view, this is a very profound and detailed monograph about the He 219 with many interesting pictures: https://www.amazon.de/Nachtjäger-Heinkel-He-219/dp/3925505512 However, the text is German only and unfortunately the book was never published in English which is a pity since it is a very good source of reference about the production as well as the operational history of the He 219. Google translator app on a smart phone to the rescue! I was just introduced to this the other day by a fellow modeler who is an IT supervisor; load the app; select the language to be translated; point your smartphone at the desired text and Voila! (That's French for I'll be d----d~!) Works great on the colors, markings, and paint mix text on the Japanese kits! Probably old hat to most of you, but you should have seen me doing my Happy Dance the first time I used it! Mike
David E. Brown
Or, you could purchase the revised and English-version of Roland Remp's book published by Schiffer: https://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Germanys-Nightfighter-Schiffer-Collectors/dp/0764312294/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3LHSZ21WYMX6L&keywords=Roland+Remp&qid=1641004153&s=books&sprefix=roland+remp%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C76&sr=1-1 Cheers, David
