Tamiya 1/6 CB1100R

Thirsty

Recommended Posts

So I've started building the CB1100R. I'm trying to do more on this one with scale details etc. I'm using real hardware as much as I can and doing wiring etc. I forgot to start taking pics so I started today with the engine case inserted into the frame along with the battery.

Battery has positive and negative cables attached.

51773827324_2a7808640c_b.jpg

Positive wire going to reg/rec. Otherwires to follow.

51772358567_4706dff05d_b.jpg

Mostly real hardware around the underside of the engine.

51772358642_2da11b0429_b.jpg

I painted the gold bits - don't like the standard plating. This gold is the lightest I have and it's still a bit dark.

51773827009_33cff58ed9_b.jpg

Not a million miles away though.

51773182251_897bf57a1e_b.jpg

More real hardware on the engine hangars.

51773871754_57a4f08a51_b.jpg

Clutch and stator covers attached with screws and I made paper gaskets for them. Every bike I've had you can see the gaskets so it's scale.

The next bit - making hose clamps - should be fun.

Stay tuned - intake stuff coming up.

This is going to be interesting. 👍

I wonder why Tamiya have never made a 1/6 racing bike? I'd love to have a go at one.

They sort of did with the CB750R

Doing the same with my z1r Gardner in 1/12th I may even attempt to recreate lock wiring.
mill be watching this develop.

here is my old original one it’s a slightly later rc.

Cb1100

Love the fairing on the RC. This is the one we got mostly in Oz I think.

I'm building this bike as a used example and not a showroom restoration. Anyone that has owned a bike knows that they eventually get a bit grotty behind the covers and around the engine etc. I don't really like building a model that looks brand new because the challenge isn't really there. My bike is going to have a really nice paint job because that's the bit of an old bike that can easily be improved. All the mechanical stuff is way harder to keep clean and looking like new.

To that end here are a few more pics.

Wiring done (for now) and weathered a bit.

51774993882_3e3eec83fa_b.jpg

Here's the same area not weathered. I wish I had some finer wire to make this a bit more scale!

Rear brake reservoir area. This has now been weathered a bit.

51776694530_4cddd10254_b.jpg

I decided to use the plated exhaust connector thingys 'cause the plating was pretty good. They will dirty up nicely I think.

Carbys are never shiny and new looking on a used bike - particularly one that's over 30 years old.

I've since mounted the carbs and done a few other things so more photos coming later today.

So barrels are roughed up a bit.

51778223968_feabd423e6_b.jpg

Carbs attached to head. Used a slightly different technique for the hose clamps - think it looks a little more authentic.

51778621884_72bdbb1ddb_b.jpg

Weathered the RHS a little.

51778225793_be2ed08026_b.jpg

Coils are dirty as they should be.

Top of the engine just sitting in place - had to see what it looks like. An extra pair of hands would be useful when it comes to gluing this in tomorrow :)

I painted the footpeg hangars as the plating was way too bright.

And swingarm fitted!  A bit of a milestone :)

Got a bit more done over the last few days.

51791661680_6d7a6b2f2d_b.jpg

Sprocket cover on. Had to grind a bit out for Stator wires to fit through.

Took the shocks off again to put transfers on!

51794137325_d20b8bebff_b.jpg

Front wheel halves painted gold and some hardware added.

Thats a great build you have going on there.

Thanks. Really enjoying this one. I'm learning new techniques and ways of doing things. I'm leading up to building my 1/6 CX500T as I have one and I want to model it as it is.

Been working some more on wheels and exhaust. Also decided to make steel rotors for the disc brakes as the plastic ones just don't work for me. I turned these up on my lathe to fit the plastic inners.

Finished painting the rear wheel.

No filler here - just tamiya extra thin and sanding. Once primed, painted and cleared should see no seams.

Spent a couple of hours today getting the back brake done. Was just going to leave it plastic but I think it would have detracted from the whole considering the front brakes.

Quite a few hours work involved in this little project but it will be worth it I think. Those discs are not glued in, they are all a tight finger press fit.

Got a bit more done today. Decided to mount the front axle the way it should be by using the clamps at the bottom of the forks. Cut them off, glued in some captive nuts and drilled out for some screws. Works well.

51806931984_bab3127f1f_b.jpg

51805617257_26d5d38098_b.jpg

Exhaust painted and ready to go. Decided to have a bit of texture to replicate and exhaust that may have been repaired so I painted the mufflers with Mr Surfacer and sanded it back but not perfectly. It's hard to see but there is some underlying wavyness to the painting now. My turbo has that look from repairs made.

51805856332_8d9835405b_b.jpg

Headers fitted. I've glued the engine end with some flexible type glue to allow me to move things around in case I needed it.

Exhaust completed. Went on very nicely.

51806691433_275bbdcd4e_b.jpg

Front wheel is done and painted.

51807215069_ab3314c6ce_b.jpg

Oil cooler lines made up with "fittings".

A few more small things done.

51811816706_c536ac9068_b.jpg

Instrument binnacle painted ready for decals.

51811924793_5b5f112939_b.jpg

Control box - I assume this is where all the wiring comes together?

51812163559_5687ae6c92_b.jpg

51810876767_61a1d77336_b.jpg

Got some real hardware happening here - it really needs it in these areas.

51810877437_40432935de_b.jpg

Took the time here to make a new kill switch. Also made the brake master cylinder reservoir a bit more reall than just painting it white.
