First We Take Manhattan.... Special Hobby 1/72 Short Sunderland Mk. V - Finally Finished

Another one that has been lingering in the stash.

I have very fond memories of my friend building the Airfix Sunderland when I was younger.

Always wanted one but didn't have the space. Still not sure I have.

I was going to build this for my nephew but he has now emigrated. It will still be the version he wanted though.

I have bookmarked @tonyot 's fabulous build and will be referring regularly to that and his magazine article in January 2021 Scale Aircraft Modelling.

I need the help and will have to look to see which portholes to blank off and fill.

The only bit of aftermarket but a necessity for this.

I will try to get some plastic cut tomorrow.

Thanks for looking,

Should be interesting!

I have the old Airfix kit sitting on the SoD. I started it about 5 years ago with my youngest son, and it's still not finished 😤

I suggest you start clearing a space for it now 😜

Have to clear enough space on the bench first. :rofl2:

Good Luck Alistair,.......all I can advise is that you prepare your parts well and maybe treat it like a vacuform,....... the result is worth it and from what I`ve seen it is well within your capability,..... I had to walk away at times,..... then come back to it after a break.

Cheers

Thanks Tony for your advice and your confidence.

I knew from your build that it was going to be more than a challenge, as I recall it fought you all the way.

Am I ready for it. I don't know but I'll give it a go.

I will walk away at times. I have found that usually works well.

Cheers,

Alistair

Hi Alistair

Have this kit on the brew at my bench

Quick warning for you, depending on which version of the Mk V/GR5/MR5

you want to build, Special Hobby don't provide the correct parts for the

latter versions (from 1950-59 RAF Service)

I have added a couple of links for you, one a kit Review I did, and my WIP build, if they are any help?

Special Hobby Kit review

Special Hobby Kit Build - RNZAF MR5

One main issue interior wise is the Rear Deck, that Special hobby provide, and its

placement in the fuselage per their instructions per photo below

What it actually looks like on the real aircraft

Look forward to your build, if you ever need any reference photos/technical knowledge, just sing out

I wish I had the space . . . .

...and time! I've long thought about a South African Mk5, but Real Life simply hasn't allowed it (or any other modelling for the last year, unfortunately.☹).

Looking at those sprue photos, Alistair, my first thought was "Blimey, that's a lot of parts!". Then the penny dropped!

I'll be watching your progress with interest.

Ooh got to watch this one for two reasons:

1/ I do love a flying boat.

2/ originally from..................guess!

Well, based on your username I might hazard a guess at somewhere by the River Wear. ;)

Welcome aboard.

There won’t be much going on surely? You can get some of the fiddly bits done!

Craig.

Already started fiddly bits.

This lot took me 90 minutes.

That's it I'm afraid.

I've opened up the waist gun doors as well.

Need to plan the painting for the innards as there are various colours.

Thanks for looking,

As I had the airbrush out I gave the bits a coat of Nato Black or Aluminium.

Unfortunately I've run out of Flat Aluminium so I'm going to have to hit Hobbycraft tomorrow in the hope that they have some. Some hope.

If not I'll use the Xtreme metals and dull it down a tad.

Thanks for looking,

Cheers,

Alistair

Coming along for the ride :)
Yes it's big, and I've heard it to be a handful but it didn't stop me from having one in the stash - even if like many finding a good spot may end up being an additional challenge :D

Welcome aboard, glad to have you along.:D

At least you will be able to see the pitfalls to avoid whether operator error or not.

If it helps I'll be happy.

Cheers,

Alistair
