RAF Typhoon 'Kill'

Hi folks,

I was interested to read about an RAF Typhoon shooting down a 'small drone' over Syria:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/raf-typhoon-destroys-terrorist-drone-in-syria

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59615769

OK, getting a small drone is not too exciting in itself, but it is a first shoot-down for a Typhoon, so it might make an interesting subject for a model. Since the report came out it has all been very quiet, so does anyone have any info on the Typhoon in question, such as serial number, squadron, and armament loadout?

The RSAF shot already several Have already before. Its the first shoot down for a RAF Typhoon but not for a Typhoon.

Thanks for clarifying, Michael, I wasn't aware of that.

I can't help the feeling that the missile could have been significantly more expensive than the drone. Still, I guess that, in the heat of combat, the relative cost of the weapons is not a major factor.

I read, years ago, a story about a Forward Air Controller in Vietnam, who was very determined to kill a single VC soldier he had spotted. The legend goes that he called in the artillery, then Skyraiders, then Phantoms and - eventually - even a B-52 strike. It was estimated by the article's author that eliminating one enemy combatant would have cost $1-2 million.

Having said all that, the Vietnam war cost American taxpayers $1 Billion a week at its height, so the above action would have been very small potatoes, in the overall scheme of things. I've read that Afghanistan and Iraq collectively cost $4 Billion a week. The total cost must now be in the trillions of dollars.

Would suggest that the value of the intelligence and/or capability that is denied the enemy through loss of the asset is the main cost that matters, not that it’s quantifiable.
