Finished: 1/48 De Havilland Comet DH.88 MikroMir

Hi!

The canopy is somehow finished. The glue was removed with alcohol and the erased uprights repainted.
I added some of the uprights with stretched plastic glued with a micro drop of varnish. I stopped quite quickly, too dangerous for the canopy.
The co-pilot's headrest is made of plastic sheet as well as the part on which it is glued. That of the Kit is too small.

All cockpit parts are glued more or less straight and more or less in the right place.
The throttles are probably too "modern" for our Comet but no photos are available to my knowledge.

The dial perched on the dashboard also needs to be redone.

The back of the dials is added behind the front and rear dashboard.

I used these photos among other things to put everything in place.

N.B the instrument visible at the back on this image taken from a film, Could be a lamp? You could still add two or three things, no doubt.

Also plan a few hours to make and put in place the various appendages that protrude here and there:

One headlight on each side, one red and one green and one at the back.

Without forgetting the balancing weights made with copper wire and drops of paint.

And a double Pitot tube:

The beast is over...

The exhausts are placed (stretched plastic approx 1mm in diameter). If you leave an exhaust trace, be careful of the mudguard, which is partly protected from smoke when the plane is in flight.

The propellers receive the small metal discs that sit at the top of each pan. Food tray aluminum (1.7mm diam.).

The airbrakes are glued. I painted them gray on the inside. Please note they are a bit wide. I didn't pay attention to it and the A is offset from the part under the fuselage.

The patina is VERY light. Much too light for my taste but it's still a racing plane and I'm especially afraid of ruining everything...
I just put a little "smoke" in the aero on the engine nacelles and at the exit of the exhausts. It does not show in my photos.
Some dark brown oil juice in the engraving on the nose, nacelles, fuselage plugs and Karman fittings.

I might get the fenders dirty.

The headlight cone (redone...) is glued with varnish. It is not very transparent but to the naked eye it does not shock.

To conclude...

I believe that all the parts of the kit used have been modified or redone except for the photoetched parts (I didn't use them all...) and the moving parts of the plane. Still, it's a lot of work.
If you have a little experience and if you are motivated you can do something good with it. There is nothing insurmountable in this assembly except the shape of the opening of the cockpit which is false. (Viewed from above it forms a trapezium when it should be rectangular. I haven't seen it and modifying it seems too complicated to me).
Mikromir still missed the try. That's a shame.

Regards.

Thank you!

I accentuated the patina a little with pastels on the Karman fitting, the leading edge of the wings, around the entrance to the cockpit and under the nacelles and under the fuselage of the aircraft. The exhaust traces have been slightly accentuated with black pastel.
It doesn't really show on the pictures...in real life either.

  • Louis changed the title to Finished: 1/48 De Havilland Comet DH.88 MikroMir

Stunning and very beautiful model. I admire your stamina at completing such a monster of a kit. Well done indeed. Now should I get rid of my kit or take the punishment of trying to emulate what you have achieved!
