I know the average readership on here is a little somewhat Social Media gun shy, however I have to admit I recently accepted defeat rand signed up to Facebook a short while back. The main reason was that many local model kit sales were steering away from eBay and the like and going onto these types of platforms instead. I have to say, I’ve honestly bagged a number of absolute bargain kits of late (Tamiya 1/32 P-51D for the equivalent of 30 quid!) and there are many other pages that are well worth a good look. This BM forum is still my go to modelling source but FB provides plenty of other cool modelling options as well. Let’s face it, Airfix are targeting a far younger audience then us old fools so perhaps your 2022 resolution could be to open your eyes and rethink your thoughts on Social Media. Honestly, it ain’t all that bad! Cheers.. Dave

JamesP
There are many people you still don’t have access to the internet so I presume we are suggesting that the competitions should include postal entries. Entrants should include a 35mm slide if your best kit so they can project it on the wall. 😜 If you choose not do use social media ( no FB for me, but do use Twitter and Instagram) you can’t complain about missing out. No one is complaining about competitions in the magazines they don’t buy. Edited December 19, 2021 by JamesP

My choice for not using social media is that when I did I found it very depressing and thus bad for my mental health and general well-being, the easiest way to overcome this was to unsubscribe from it. I've felt much better since. If Airfix are holding an on-line competition why can't they just make it a competition where they allow you to fill in an on-line form? For my general well-being, I'm not prepared to subscribe to social media just to take part in a competition. 2

Because it's not just a competition, its a cheap mass advertising promotion for Airfix where the competition entrants do the work for Airfix. Every entrant in a competition from an online form on their website is already brand aware, but does nothing towards promoting the brand by entering. Every entrant in a Facebook competition that requires you to like, comment, or share, is promoting Airfix to every one of their friends and contacts, some of whom may enter the competition themselves and promote Airfix to all their friends and contacts. There's often a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth about the lack of youngsters in the hobby, it's going to die a death etc, but Airfix are doing something here to promote themselves (and therefore our hobby) to the younger generations using their preferred communication methods to best advantage. Using FB and joining in is optional, it's not compulsory. The prizes are small and not life changing to a seasoned modeller, but Airfix hopes just the possibility of winning a small prize could be life changing to a none modeller, in that it will get them hooked on the hobby and buy more Airfix kits. If more people buy Airfix kits, they'll likely go on to buy Revell, Tamiya etc, and then they're joining clubs and visiting Britmodeller (apparently there may be one or two other modelling sites available) then they're buying after market and have a growing stash. More modellers = more sales = more investment in product = more choice of kits available ( - I was going to say cheaper prices, but in the current commercial climate the best we could probably expect is prices to rise slower than expected) A few lucky people who use FB will win a few small prizes, but those that are interested in what Airfix are doing can follow the announcements behind the windows without using FB. If Airfix succeed with their Advent Calendar campaigns, everyone is a winner as it will help Airfix grow.
treker_ed
I wholeheartedly agree with @Dave Swindell comments. The online/social media competitions are about enticing the next generation into the hobby, not really about enticing the current crop of modellers into entering. Personally with the amount of griping and moaning in this thread, I'm surprised anyone even bothers to look at the Airfix Advent Calendar at all! I've stopped because all I need to do is look here and within a couple of minutes of Midnight GMT someone has already posted what the days offering is! Airfix marketing know exactly, through various means and methods, who their target audience is with every type of marketing and promotional campaign. Not only that, they know at whom each release is aimed at - the high end £120 1/24 kit down to the £9.99 (or less) 1/72 gift pack/starter kit. Their marketing campaigns are targeted accordingly! Their online presence whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Discord etc. Will be aimed at a particular segment of that targeted audience. At one point in the last 18 months, I did actually respond to a Facebook post from the Airfix team when they commented about posting pictures on Instagram/Twitter and referencing them on FB. I personally do not, and will not have those as part of my SM accounts. I mentioned that there are a large number of people who, like myself, may have FB accounts, but do not have Instagram, or Twitter accounts, so do not see these pictures. Airfix responded by apologising, and saying that they would adjust their policies in future. Since that time, I have not seen a single post referencing any pictures or items posted that ignored anyone following the Airfix social media accounts on Facebook! Contacting them (either through the SM posts) or other means can work! So instead of venting on a forum that Airfix may or may not interact with, let them know. But as mentioned previously, these types of marketing campaigns (for that's what they are) are not aimed at the likes of us, they are aimed at the younger generations who Airfix (or the other kit manufacturers) are wanting to encourage into the hobby. Honestly, it ain’t all that bad! During lockdown I did a course in digital marketing for museums, using social media. It was pointed out during the course that the demographic for Facebook was now very much parents / grandparents and that if we were to reach the younger generation we would have to use those forms of social media that Airfix seem to be targeting this Advent. Therefore Dave ( @Rabbit Leader ) by moving into Facebook you have just gone home. Overall we need to remember that 16 pages of the current Airfix Catalogue are given over to Quickbuild, if through their marketing a percentage of these can be persuaded to move onto the new Starter Kits and then "mainstream" that can only be a good thing.

Black Knight
I'd like at add a few words 1. Hornby have 4 (at least) Advent calendars running; Airfix, Hornby, Corgi, Scalextric 2. each time someone visits one of those calendars the 'hit' is registered and the more 'hits' they get push the website up to the top of Google searches 3. as we know, no matter the model maker, to the general public every model kit is an 'Airfix' (just visit ebay to see this) 4. at this time of year people shopping on line looking for an 'Airfix' will google it and of course 'Airfix' will come to the top of the search lists because of number 2 5. same for people wanting to buy 'model train' - Hornby will be at the top of the search list, same for Corgi cars or Scalextric racing
Rabbit Leader
The reveal for the 24th of December is just an announcement and notification sign up for the 10 January 2022 Airfix range announcement, however is there a possible clue with the Naval vessel background image? As an aero-fan myself, I’m not going to guess what this could be however it might be pointing to a large 1/350 Nautical release as mentioned in various other threads on here? Cheers and stay safe for Xmas.. Dave
