1/48 Tamiya F-4B, VMFA-323 'Death Rattlers', Chu Lai, 1967.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is my recently completed 1/48 Tamiya F-4B, in the markings of VMFA-323 'Death Rattlers', based at Chu Lai air base, South Vietnam, in 1967. BuNo 152258 served at least 3 tours and went on to survive the Vietnam war, subsequently being converted to a drone. The build thread is below.

Extras used included Hypersonic ejection seats, Hypersonic early fin tip,  Quinta cockpit set, Eduard MK.77 Napalm canisters, Furball masks, Eduard stencils, a mixture of decals from Eduard (their Good Morning Da Nang boxing and newly released sheet),  Eduard canopy mirrors along with MK.82s and twin shot Zuni pods from the spares. Paints are from MRP and the weathering is mixture of Abteilung oils, Tamiya weathering sets, AK pencils and some post shading.

That is absolutely gorgeous! The twin shot Zuni pods are the same as those used on late model F-8 Crusaders? I've never seen them mounted on an F-4 so I learned something from your build.

Agree with everyone above, really nice Phantom. I would dirty up the “alligator skin” behind the engine nozzles even more. Those engines were smokey. My best friend was a VMFA-323 RIO when he was active duty, albeit in the N model several years later. I have an interest in the squadron because of him.
