Martian
Well, the wretched thing fought me right up to the bitter end and I hated every bit of the build process, with the model very nearly going the same way as its 1/1 scale predecessor, but at least I now have a model of Wilhelm Schramm's SL.11 for the all important RAF Hornchurch Museum's Battle of Britain weekend. So a vote of thanks to Derek Harrington of Classic Airships for making this possible. Not my greatest effort and I would rate it a a meh out of ten but in my defence, I had never had to try working with PETG before. More pictures in RFI. Martian
Thank you gentlemen, VMS satin varnish does hide a multitude of sins though, which in my case, to quote Robert Deveraux Earl of Essex, just before Queenie had his head snicked off, "are more numerous than the hairs on my head". Nope! it didn't matter how many tentacles I waved at the thing, the PETG didn't want to play ball, even when I threatened to read Vogon poetry to it. 9 hours ago, perdu said: Me too, Mars always confuses me Martian mate but allow me to say, wow what a lovely thing of lighter than air beauty. Thanks Bill. We have better news this evening on the Schutte-Lanz front. See below. 8 hours ago, Janine05 said: How long is the Zepplin? If you mean the Schutte-Lanz, the model is about twenty one inches long in 1/350 scale. Right, the news I referred to: This week I picked up a couple of the 3D printed Schutte-Lanz kits that I had commissioned. They are in smooth resin that you can scribe, although if I had been a smarter Martian, I would have got the designer to incorporate the scribing needed in the kit in the first place. The good news for those wanting a Schutte-Lanz in their collection is that Roger aka The Dorset Printman asked if I minded if he made the model available on his EvilBay page, and word is that it is already available. From the pictures above, the modeller could probably get away with a quick clean up of the one piece model and go straight to painting and rigging. I would, however, advise replacing the very thin tail surfaces as they are incredibly fragile and are almost certain to get broken with any degree of handling. You will not be surprised to earn that this Alien is going for a super detailed model with much finer struts, the aforementioned scratch built tail surfaces, a better gun platform and scratch built radiators, hand holds and exhausts for the engine gondolas. More as soon as I get things properly underway. Thanks for looking Martian 👽
general melchett
Great job on the Schutte-Lanz, like the snazzy scheme. You're a very brave Martian dealing with PETG, only ever tried one (before discovering SLA printing) and after attacking it with a flame gun, Makita power grinder and a 3/4 inch chisel, it ended up back in the plastic bin bag it came in! Quote You will not be surprised to earn that this Alien is going for a super detailed model with much finer struts, the aforementioned scratch built tail surfaces, a better gun platform and scratch built radiators, hand holds and exhausts for the engine gondolas. Ah, hindsight....that old chestnut. Would have meant a bit of extra work for your chap but a heck of a lot less for you. Looks to be a good base for super detailing, looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Martian
Things have been busy/manic here at Martian Towers recently with the Farnborough show tomorrow and the Hornchurch display next weekend. I decided that a model of the LZ.38 would be appropriate for Hornchurch, being as it was, the first Zeppelin to raid London on 31st May 1915. A frantic effort thus ensued to get the model finished and we crossed the finishing line only this morning. I give you Hauptmann Erich Linnarz's LZ.38. More pictures will appear in "Ready for Inspection" as soon as I have finished this post. Inbetween finishing the LZ.38, writing some more of the book and getting the website updated, I have managed to get some work done on my 1/700 Schutte-Lanz. I am enjoying this one a lot, even though the gondolas are insanely small. I have also learned that I need to write specifications better for future commissions as my lack of clarity to the designer, led to the tail surfaces being very to scale but way too fragile, to the point that they break if one so much as looks at them. Out plastic card time to scratch build a replacement set of tail feathers. Of course after the kit had been printed, better information on the position and shape of the dorsal machinegun nest had to come to light, so in a whirling frenzy of blue tentacles a replacement nest was constructed. The gondolas have had grab rails, exhausts and struts added and are near to being ready for paint. Thanks for looking. Quiet Mike
I hope the Martian Overlords don't mind me sharing this here, but while it is a bit of a thread hijack, it is at least on topic. At the weekend I got the chance to see a sizeable chunk of L.48, a very recent acquistion by my friends at the Great War Huts near Bury St Edmunds. I have to admit it was treated like a holy relic, and we just stared at it for ages dumbfounded. Great War Huts Volunteer Weekend by Mike, on Flickr Fascinating to see all the bracing wires and turnbuckles still attached. Also the pencil marks left from it's construction. Martian
Thanks for sharing that Mike, a fascinating piece, in some respects more interesting than the large piece of wreckage in the church at Theberton. Martian
Thanks Kev, presentation is something I am looking to improve on. Fortunately, my best friend's wife is a professional artist. She loves "a project" and has decided to make yours truly her project. I was extremely fortunate at the Farnborough show in that someone approached me to say that he had a bit of Zeppelin and if I could tell him a bit about it, he would donate it to the collection. He sent me a picture of the piece and from what he had already told me, I was able to identify it as coming from Max Dietrich's L.34, shot down in the sea off Hartlepool on 27th November 1916 by Second Lieutenant Ian Vernon Pyott. Dietrich was the favourite uncle of the film star Marlene Dietrich and so holds all the more significance. The gentleman was as good as his word and the piece now awaits framing before joining the display. Can I build a model of this ship before Telford? It's a tall order but the least I can do is give it a go. Very Lucky of Mars 👽 9
Martian
I am intending to commission a 3D printed kit of and M Class Zeppelin (more specifically the later M2 Class) to add to my Zeppelin display. I have plenty of pictures for my designer but am having the Devil's own task getting hold of a decent set of plans. Can anyone help me in this regard?. My designer will most likely make the kit available for others to purchase. The model will most likely be to 1/700 scale and will doubtless be available on the designer's EvilBay page.. Hope that helps Martian 👽 Edit: Tje display will also be at the IPMS Abingdon show on Saturday. 5

Seriously, I can only say that the work you've done documented in the 90 pages in this thread deserves a display of that size. I' m sure I'll be one of many britmodellers stopping by and spending some time with the display. As for pressure, I'm sure you'll have a mechanism for lowering it a bit!
