You mean @general melchett's Battle Pants? Very dark and even more uncomfortable I am told by Darling. Actually, she would probably set all the propellers spinning first! :yikes:

you can see longitudinal stringers which Takom have got right. You will also see very prominent vertical lines, spaced at regular intervals. these are where the frames of the airship

Looks like you've got your work cut out there Martian, frame positions need to be added but I'm not sure what is the best method, I'd be more worried about getting those stringers correct, particularly around the mid-section. Just my :2c:.

That is funny, Martin.

It looks great even now.

Thanks Stuart. The stringers are a tad too sharp on the kit and to the naked eye look better in the mid section where sanding has rounded them off a bit. I anticipate that the rest will fall into line as I continue to sand the model.

Forget the toilet, couldn't Mrs Martian sleep inside the model? But seriously, the scribing you refer to I think will enhance the model greatly.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might keep you all entertained whilst this process is taking place?

The Martian version of the Can-can? 😀 Maybe not. All those tentacles flopping about? 😳 No, definitely not. Let's stick to Zeppelins. 🙂 Regards, Jeff.

very clear and very obvious why it's needed from the picture. Having never scribed a kit, I for one would be happy to see progress of this work !!!

Happy to help. It will be an interesting experience trying to scribe over such an undulating surface. Still, with the ignorance of the bumble bee, I shall bash on regardless.

Just wondering if you couldn’t get away with either thin strips of decal or a marking pen rather than scribing?

To get regular marks like that I’d be tempted to stand the thing on its nose, set up my scriber/pencil on some sort of stand at the right height next to it and then twirl it round. Maybe this is why I shouldn’t do airships!

I’m still struggling to come to terms with how big they were…

Adrian

I think I am more confident with scribing Adrian but it's good idea if plan A goes belly up.

Like you, and even though I am fully conversant with how these things worked, I still can't get my head around these ginormous things, bigger than most aircraft carriers, just floating in the air.

Many a true word Adrian. I would have to ferret about for the exact details but in the early days of aerostation, some plonker actually tried this. It ended badly, very badly.

I said I might post some pictures of my Zeppelin memorabilia. I am limiting myself tot hose Zepps that were shot down over the UK, including "Granny's Zepp", the L.15, that came down off Margate.

024.jpg

Then part of Mathy's L.31, shot down over Potters Bar.

022.jpg

L.33 which came down at Little Wigborough, Essex.

023.jpg

And finally, a "Sweetheart Brooch" fashioned from the wreckage of L.48 that crashed at Theberton Suffolk and the subject of my adventure back in the summer.

I wasn't going to bother showing pictures of the scribing process but @npb748r's post made me stop and think. I realised that I was on the brink of falling into a trap that I am all too often guilty of; namely assuming that people know what I know. I also realised that there may be a bit more to scribing a Zeppelin than first meets the eye. I have never tried scribing over such a closely scalloped surface before and there may be pitfalls awaiting me. I'm sure that those of you with this kit would far rather I made the mistakes for you and came up with answers for the same!

My approach to sorting these missing frames out was that I very carefully measured out and marked where I wanted the frames to be and then with equal care, laid strips of Scotch 3m vinyl masking tape over the marked positions. This requires intense concentration to get each frame exactly right and you will find it tedious. This being the case, don't try and do this all in one hit, you will go wrong. It has taken me since Friday to get the two Takom kits ready for scribing and I still have to do the 1/720 Mark1 kit. The frame lines on that kit are not the most distinct and I have decided that they are in need of sharpening up.

I have also come to the conclusion that as there is more than meets the eye to most things in life, I ought to expect the unexpected with these kits. After all, I have only ever built one airship kit in my life and seem to remember that it was anything but an easy build. I anticipate the scribing process to take some time but will keep you all updated as to how things are progressing: or not,in due course.

Thanks for looking

Having just seen this WIP I must say that I'm also facinated by the story of the Zeppelins albeit from the other side. :hmmm:

My father comes from Tondern in the south of Jutland and from 1864 to 1920 it was part of Germany.

Many danes where therefore drafted into the German Army - but that another story.

In Tondern the Zeppelin had a base and therefore I have - as a christmas gift to myself ( don't spoil the surprise for me:winkgrin:) bought the Q-version from Takom as it has markings for several Tonders based Zeppelins. :D

There is actually a museum in Tondern and  it has plans to extend its display in the coming years. I include a link to it here:

Yeah, probably. As if all those rivets weren't enough to satisfy your masochistic streak. 😣 Oh well, if you really must impose this on yourself then I wish you good luck with it. 🙂 Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Regards, Jeff.

Thats 3m wide tape? How big is this model?

Martin, what can I say. Exceptional intro and background plus your collection. I'm liking what I see but don't think I'll be building one. If memory serves me, didn't Frog produce/release an airship kit, maybe in the late sixties of a tad later? Then Rose Miniatures produced a vac-form barrage  balloon.

I'll stick around.

This would work for later Zeppelins such as the Hindenburg or Graf Zeppelin as these did have the gaps between the frames taped over. With these earlier Zepps we are trying to recreate an actual gap, hence the unavoidable chore of scribing them.

Thanks Colin. FROG did indeed produce the R100 and included the Montreal mooring mast in the kit.

How um alles in der Welt did it happen I missed this WIP so long?

I've waited for it since the tentacled cigar build (a.k.a. @Martian) revealed his plans for it over at the announcement of Takoms planned gift to the WWI lunatics a few months ago - and now I'm about two or more weeks late, having it almost reached page four. How could this happen?

I mean; ZEPPELINE! As obviously some others here I am caught in deep fascination of these things, for various reasons. From being raised with the movie starring Michael York, to the fascination of this glorious, yet deprecated technology - it's all in there. Of course I ordered the kit, but hasn't arrived here. So, I am hoping for inspiration, and - it's already there!

So, I stroke my big, bushy moustache, put on my pickelhaube, and sneak into this big, windy hangar on friendly planet mars if I may, to see this big one takes shape.

Weitermachen!

Thanks, you are more than welcome. Just don't leave your pickelhaube on @general melchett's chair, he may sit on it and we all remember how over excited he got last time that sort of thing happened. Lady Melchett tells me that she had to administer cold showers to him for a week to calm him down.
