Popular Post paulsbrown
This was on deck right after my YF-16 and again using the vintage Monogram. The 1980 kit F-18 has the open LEX slots perfect for the first prototype but still needs some small changes, mainly adding dog tooth on the elevators and wings plus some changes in the cockpit instrument panel. I added seamless intakes and a vac canopy as the original was too small and not the more rounded omega shape. In both kits I used the original landing gear struts, they are of the day's molding capabilities but despite some chunky areas are well detailed and even have the brake lines included. Paint was a mix of Testors MM enamel blues and Testors gold, Caracal and Monogram decals. Caracal had matched their 'F-18 Hornet - The Early Years' with the original blue auto paint used in the rollout F-18 which saved me from repainting the Monogram decals the correct color.

Dean1700
Love that Hornet scheme. One of the best prototype schemes ever in my opinion. 2
Troffa
That's a lovely job on both, the Hornet Cockpit is brilliantly done- I love the orange instrumentation on the Instrument Panel. History in scale!
Vince1159
Lovely build,i never realized the F-18 went back to the 70's you learn something every day....
John R
Nice work. I built the Hasegawa 1/72 version many years ago and spent a lot of time trying to find which 'blue' was used. Eventually I was told that it was from the Ford car plant 'down the road' and nobody knew which it was so I ended up mixing something to match the blue of the decals John

the MDman
Nice. Very nice! I remember converting back in the ‘80s a Revel YF-18 into an F/A-18A. But the kit must have ended in the bin… Today I would have opted for the prototype.

CaracalModels
Both of them look really great! I had to go to some really shady parts of the city to find an auto paint shop that could mix me a small sample of the blue color from ancient paint catalogues 🙂

loloskymaster
This duo is such a dream ! Great job! A F-18 proto is one of my projects but the one used by NASA, with gold and blue parts but also with red ones. This scheme is on the Caracal sheet. I have to learn about these specificts Lerx. Well done with interesting details in the cockpit ! The paint is really nice too ! Bravo! Lolo

stevehnz
That is impressive. To my mind, possibly the best looking prototype scheme I 've seen & beautifully done. 👍 Steve

Deano353
That's so well done it's great looking. I had a kit of this aircraft as a kid many years ago doubt it would have been 1/48, I think 72 at most but it was this scheme and mine had finger prints in glue on various panels lol. Don't see many prototypes about are you doing more?
exdraken
Wow, very impressive! First the immaculate white and gold!! scheme, then this cockpit-out if this world, love the intakes too ! Which make are they?

Yes, I'm making the white Rafale A right now and want to do one of the white Harrier schemes. If you hit the 'prototype' tag at the beginning you'll see some others I've done. 12 hours ago, exdraken said: Which make are they? The are the old Monogram kits from 1979 and 1980 Werner. To me they were the obvious choice despite there being much easier, newer kits I could've gone with.

I ahve some for a Hasegawa kit but I guess they would not fit on a Monogram Hornet!
