Emhar 1/72 F94C

Recommended Posts

Latest off the bench. Having waited for a newer kit to come out in vain. I dove in and tackled Emhars simple, but accurate effort. I used a Falcon canopy-the kit one is usable, but Falcon’s is, as usual, better. A resin cockpit from True Details added the detail needed under the very clear canopy. I added a scratch nose-wheel bay and plumbing to all the gear and airbrake wells. Thinning the intake splitter plates helped a lot and I added the small intake on top of the nose. The dihedral is 8deg buy the way, a lot! The rest was trying to duplicate the natural metal finish using Alclad II over Tamiya gloss black. I never have any luck with Alclads own primers. Kit decals were used, because there are no aftermarket ones. Anyone following me, put the USAF titles an insignia on before the pods, then use another decal on the pods. The real aircraft was done that way, and there is no way the decals will settle around the compound curves-ask me how I know this! The kit decals are very thick, I would recommend replacing whatever you are able to. Anyway, it is not as good as I hoped, but looks good on the shelf. Final photo is a family portrait.

I always enjoy seeing a nice metal finish, when it looks like actual metal, even though we know it's plastic. You have already mastered this trade it seems.👍

I hope one day I will be able to do a similiar aircraft in silver-metallic. I'm thinking of something soviet though (or hungarian socialist) like a MiG-21 or similiar Sukhoi.👍

Define “mastered!’ I think I stripped the wings four times due to various mistakes, including reversing the shiny/not quite so shiny bits. I was really happy with the flaps, until I put the decals on, no slivering, but so thick I couldn’t hide them…. The gloss undercoat should be totally dry and polished smooth, the Alcad will hide nothing! Once it’s on though, it will take a lot of abuse. I used post-it notes for the most part to mask various panels. A light coat will change the appearance enough. You can spray right on top of your initial coat. Work from the bright to dull. I could not get what I wanted going the other way,

Well, the end result that matters, and in my opinion it turned out great. 👍

Anyway one can learn from mistakes.

That looks fabulous. The later Starfire is a very pretty jet (as are most of the Lockheeds of that era). Love the idea of filling it with unguided rockets as a primary weapon, it must have been a thrill to fire them all at once or even in salvos!

That's lovely. What's in the pods, rockets?

Unfortunately, they were pretty useless weapons.

The F94C also had them in the nose, around the radar. Ironically, the earlier cannon armed F94A and F94B were more likely to bring down a bomber. I think the Russians got it right, leaving cannons on their interceptors.  I always loved the look of it as well.

FFAR's- 2.75"  folding fin air-to-air rockets; the nose cap on each pod was made of fiberglass and shattered when the rockets were fired; they were horribly inaccurate- the fins seldom deployed at the same time, and many rockets collided with their neighbors. See the link below to see what one looked like. They were also carried by F-86D's and F-89's.

The famous Battle of Palmdale, which took place in 1956, will give you some idea as to how horrible a weapon the FFAR was and why it was dropped. See the link below.
