Amiot 370: Air France under Vichy - scratch conversion of Mach 2 Amiot 351/354 kit, 1/72

Hi,

Together with recently posted on RFI Amiot 351 I worked on Amiot 370 - a long range modification of Amiot 354. It was equipped with Hispano-Suiza liquid cooled engines and  inside large fuel tanks were installed.

The machine was build only as sole prototype used for some record breaking. She was reconstructed I think three times, the engines nacelles were modified with time. I made the model of the last her appearance, when the prototype was used during WW2 by Air Frnace as a long range courier plane.  Among others the plane was used for seven flights to Djibouti from Marignane (via Athene) breaking throught British blockade of French Somalia. First flight was on 27.07.1941, last on 22.02.1942. On left side on fuselage there is an emblem commemorating those flights.  Each of those flight was lasting from 14:35 h to even 18:40 h!  On return from last one the machine had accident at Athene.

The main source I used was book vol. 12 of series "les Ailes Francaises 1939-1945" entitled "Le transport aerien, 2 partie (1940-45). 

Decals used from drawer: Azur Farman 223 (all stripes and "F" in Air France), RS Caudron 445 (all F-AR and E made from another R) , Airfix Ford Tri-motor (remaining characters in "Air France" made from "American Airways"),  SH Douglas DC2 (U made from O and H in "Holland"):, Potez 63-11 (Number No 01, the Techmod set), NA 86 Sabre (E and U from US Air Force, Techmod set) and MAch 2 Amiot 351/354 - the name "Amiot") and emblem hand painted on French roundel.

Thank you! The fuselage was not that hard. The main problem were engines, which I did mostly of putty... Whole engine gondolas were reshaped (they are shorten  and the intersection with wing from top is different as they are slimmer...

Sadly I do not know when I come again to your home as ModelBrno seems postponed, but is there a big model show in Krakow?

Patrick I hope it will happen! Simply I do not know about any model show in Kraków. Have you hear any rumors on that? I have to look around. For sure the main hangar in Museum is now open after general repair, so tha Caudron 714 is there and waiting for your inspection.. :) I was so sorry, that last time it was closed!

Amiot 143 is a fruit of the given era. The majority of airplanes contemporary to her as the same ugly. And then the aerodynamics convinced constructors to build much pretty airplanes!

My baby brother...

Rarely does anyone have a need to have some Amiot 3... series in their collection. But for freaks like that, Mach2 released its 351-354.

To my surprise, you bought this oddity - hard, I accepted your madness. But to buy a second, identical Amiot, and then build both (in extremely different versions - different engines, tails, and one even in civilian colors) ???

I have been building models for 55 years, but I have not encountered such a case. What does your wife say? I think I need to talk to your doctor 😉

Many thank, indeed it is maybe not a common machine but it is on a post stamp in Republic of Djibouti, so there perhaps is better recognized :)

 Thank you! The scheme is typical for French civil airplanes during Vichy period, when they were trying to keep the neutrality status, so the contrast colors were intended to differ as much as possible from military camouflages of fighting sides machines.

I appreciate that you like it! Thanks. In some way I like Mach 2 kits, for sure they are challenging... But they do really unique types. I made already in recent few years Coronado, Mariner, Bloch 131, He 114, now  those two Amiots and I have still three more ins stash (BV 139, Arado 232, Ju 352 - so only German remains) and one day I hope to build them... :)

Thank yo very much. I think I've seen large scale models of this Amiot (i9t was maybe wooden aerodynamic one and a regular scaled another) in Le Bourget museum in Paris, so at least there are next two ;)
