Operation Opera F-16

1/48 Hasegawa F-16A with small stab tailplanes will get you where you need to go. Kinetic could too, but cockpit is F-16AM from the outset hence not appropriate. Still need the small tailplanes for Kinetic.

Check out www.F-16.net for plenty of reference shots.

If you take a late kit with AM or MLU updates remember to backdate gun vents, use early drop tanks as, be aware of the difference between early and late pylons and whatever is related to ECM suite like RWR antennas or chaff and flare dispenser.

yes, early squared off fins not latter ones with 45° cut nor fatter drop tanks

you mean standard 370 gallon tanks, not the very big 600 gallon ones that some Israeli, or UAE F-16s use.

any photos that would explain in more detail please?

not very nice photo of such an F-16

the small stabs can be sen to good effect...

If you are planning to make any of the F-16 used on that op you have to make an early F-16A either with early stabs or larger ones, early drop tanks fins were squared off, later drop tanks have a 45° cut at the end. There are threads either on ARC on F-16.net who explain nearly everything plus a single picture of the flight group waiting to take off

IDF updated their Vipers in a different manner than MLU/AM variants, fatter drop tanks were not used during that op, I do have some doubts about them having flare F-4 flare dispensers between belly fins

this one?

this is a Museum aircraft from way later! no reference to 1981!

it also has large stabs by the way!

Amos Dor's lovely Israeli Vipers: F-16A/B Netz book has a nice few bits on the Opera raid.

They were Peace Marble 1 Block 10's, small stabs, no updated chaff / flare / ECM by that time period, UHF blade antenna under the intake instead of between the ventral fins like on Block 15's and beyond.

Cheers,

Andre

Sorry if sounding impolite! That was not the idea definitely! :(

and obviously I was even wrong... it was only in a museum, but still operational.

The point is, it was heavily upgraded and not very representative of us original "Opera" state.

One needs time period photos in order to establish something close to "truth" .

The IAF was understandably also not very helpful un this respect, and are known to intentionally confuse the observers...
