German Bomb Colour

Hallo

Out of the Stuka bomb post, I want to give you the following information.

Finn posted these links:

http://www.lexpev.nl/downloads/dluft43001942.pdf

http://www.lexpev.nl/manuals/germanyold.html

Today I made a download.

Since German is my mother tongue, I was astonished what I read and saw.

This is the explicit description of German Luftwaffe bombs.

Here I found the most vital modeler’s question answered.

Which color does the bombs have?

From 1942 onward RAL 7027 !!!

So next question to all:

Does anyone have a Luftwaffe prime source for the color from 1939 until 1942?

As I said prime source, not photo or guessing!

Next question:

Has anyone a prime source about British RAF bombs?

Just a kidding question;

Did anyone paint on German bombers the bombs in the correct color?

I guess not.

Me too!

Happy modelling

P.S.: In the second link you can get an idea about so many kinds of weapons, also the Luft - Torpedo! It is incredible.

The color RAL 7027 is in comparison wth my colors close to C 310 from Gunze.

The pics from dogsbody is a guideline too.

My mistake was to think the bombs are RLM 70/71 as most standards of RLM.

Bombs earlyer can also be RLM 02.

Large bombs in RLM 65 or 74!

This is amazinig.

I have to learn too after 25 years....

RAL 7027 is a familiar colour for those that model German  armour.  It was specifically introduced in  March 1942 as part of the second tropical scheme for North Africa.  It was to  cover one third of the vehicle surfaces.

We are spoiled for choice by hobby paint manufactures, but which is most accurate?  According to research of Tomas Chory, his paint chip is based on that provided by the RAL Institute.  A study done over at missinglynx last year concluded that best model paint matches (to the Chory chip) is Tamiya,  or AK  (though the latter does contain some green).  Also, not all hobby paints were considered, so were limited to what was at hand by the poster Nacho Roces.   You would have to scroll back in that thread to see what other paints were tried, and found to be off target.

While I know of the RAL, I don't know what the numbers mean. What is RAL 7027? Thanks.

RAL is a German system or "Norm" to denote colors. A brief introduction may befound ... (where else?) here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAL_colour_standard

the German version https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAL-Farbe is giving examples (naturally not for 7027 in question and especially not for 7027 in the in those days valid definition).

Searching a bit more brings up https://www.facebook.com/www.historycolors.de/photos/ral-8020-7027-tropen-ii/1642170296064298/  (not that bad)

As always, it turned out that I did have a sample of RAL 7027 in my references. Testors had made all 4 paint colors of the DAK in their Model Master II line of paints. It is more of a dark grey with a sand reference. My bottles of these 4 paints are hidden somewhere. It is made by Colourcoats though, I just checked their website. A few years ago I emailed "Don Color" and asked about the paint colors used on WW2 German bombs. He stated that RLM 70, 02, and 66 were used on them. I considered that a guide as he did not go into any further details. What @dogsbody has on his posting seemed to show much of what I was able to find on the subject. @dov's links are excellent references. My friend Walt is in the Middle East on business; I shall have him read these as well. German is his mother tongue as well. He will be surprised as well. Again, thanks for your post!

I used RLM 70 Schwartzgrun(Black Green) for the 50kg bombs on the Airfix Do-17Z. I believe that the 250kg bombs on the sprues would be the same color. @dov's question of the actual paint color is an excellent one. This will do until we can find the document(s) stating what was to be used. and, yes, RLM 02Grau could have been used in place ofr RLM 70.

The remark in the quoted article does raise an interesting point though.

Quote

On types larger than 500 Kg (sorry - pedant alert, Kilo = big K)  the colour was almost always Light Blue 65 in view of the fact that these bombs were always carried externally and seen against the underside camouflage colour of the aircraft

So what would have been done with the night bombing raids then... a big blue Herman against a black underside would negate the purpose a bit...

I know some nightfighters had black undersides - but weren't the regular bomber forces (ie He111, Do17, Ju88, etc) just finished in 65 undersides ?

Apparently even going so far as painting over markings.

I would someday like to take a stab at doing a He-111 used from one of the Dutch airfields, possibly KG4.

They would receive distemper black paint for night sorties.

Interesting thanks.  Just wondering - is it possible that any external bomb load would receive the same treatment?

Here https://www.worldwarphotos.info/gallery/germany/aircrafts-2/heinkel_he111/heinkel-he-111-bomber-night-camo/

we may observe how well the painted black external bomb load blends into the plane's camo (SCNR).

I'd be saying more than I know - but I think a lot is possible. RLM 65 bombs under a black bomber, bombs hastily painted black under the same plane and so on, we will have to search for pictures.
