Stef N. Posted October 21, 2021 Share Posted October 21, 2021 Nice kits these. A bit dated but build easily and look good and a good one to learn some airbrush camo techniques when you fancy it. A tip is to add either Tamiya Buff XF57 or Deck Tan XF55 to the dark yellow and use to spray on highlights on some of the more prominent areas. 1 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
crowe Posted November 21, 2021 Share Posted November 21, 2021 There's a lot that can be learned from YouTube When you have painted the 251 seal it with a gloss coat eg acrylic before you start the weathering chipping, panel lining. Been a while so can't remember the actual Ausf, but a "C" as best I recall -tell being the shape of the horizontal V bulge of the 'tail' superstructure and simplified single piece hexagonal 'nose' armor plate. Like most earlier Tamiya kits from the early 1970s of a time when they were the only game in town pretty much for many types, this one too has inaccuracies and is absent the detail which might be found on a more contemporary tooled model of the subject. But, it still builds into an clearly identifiable model of the subject, and there is loads of aftermarket available for it which with patience and the spend, will turn it into a first rate model of the Sd.Kfz. 251/1. As is my policy, happy to build mine vintage OOTB I didn't go there, preferring to buy the silk purse shortcutting the hard work for pretty much equal to greater spend as necessary from the outset if wanted. A fun kit to build which looks the part in its warpaint with the dynamic figurines provided, mod with Tamiya's inexpensive 1974 (or Zvezda's more recent) towed 37mm PaK 36 kit, or same fitted for a Sd.Kfz. 251/10 if preferred. Lots of old Tamiya kits can be found for very reasonable money and are simpler builds. If you are interested in 251s then this Tamiya kit is really beyond making good. The interior in particular is a work of fiction. Their more recent 251D is better. Dragon and AFV Club are probably at the top of the pile. Saw this thread and have to agree on all the good advice above.......not too sure though on gloss varnish prior to weathering though. And a big yes to check out Night Shifts Youtube demo vids. Just to give you an idea on why these 1970's Tamiya 251's area good place to experiment and scratch build. This one I did some time back. I wanted to try my hand at some scratch and conversion....so saw this in an old pic. Looked for a model out there and couldn't find one, so had a go. Hope this gives you some help on ploughing on with your first 251. I wouldn't worry too much, experiment and have some fun. Although the company were involved, along with many others in it's manufacter, it is often thought the Hanomag name association Tamiya originally ran with on the box art is a post war label thing, and so, most modellers tend to just speak of their four main model types. A through to D. Your model is the third incarnation of the halftrack and was designated Sd.Kfz 251 Ausf C (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251 model C) The first three types can be easily identified by the rear profile and added stowage boxes on top of the side fenders. Enough of the history, you asked for tips As already stated, this is an old Tamiya kit and the most up to date model kits of the 251 are made by AFV Club and ICM. No matter if you are looking to get back into AFV modelling as Tamiya still make some of the best engineered model kits you can buy and as you will have found they are the perfect kits to get back into the groove. As for painting and finishing the best advice I can offer is check out the tinterweb for ref pictures and completed models of the kit you are building. See what floats your boat, what you think looks good and what ultimately you would like yours to look like. There are many painting tecniques so check out and absorb the wealth of info out there that you would most like to most learn about. Likewise, there are hundreds, if not thousands of YouTube ‘how to’ videos of building blogs, painting, and weathering techniques and general scale modelling porn. Should i have gone for a darker colour on the sponge ?
