Slater
Are these replacing any existing assets? https://www.dsca.mil/sites/default/files/mas/Press Release - Australia 21-61 CN.pdf

Blimpyboy
It's an additional order, to beef up the RAN's helo stocks (the original 24 replaced the S-70B Seahawk). I suppose it goes hand-in-hand with the RAN's new ships (and subs...), and general modernisation/expansion of its ocean-going ASW/ASuW capabilies. Cynical me would suggest - somewhat tongue-in-cheek, and perhaps a little unfairly - that the Aussies are happy the MH-60R seems to work as advertised, straight out of the tin (no more Eurocopter/Airbus 'issues', whereby the customer unwittingly provides the OT&E, if not proof of concept...). P.S. I had no problem with the link (right click > open in new tab)! Edited October 9, 2021 by Blimpyboy
Blimpyboy
Of course, after having just placed an order for additional airframes… https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-14/defence-grounds-seahawk-helicopter-fleet/100538690
Whitewolf
If only the UK would get its act together and buy a good number of these to replace our ageing and dwindling RN Merlin fleet Edited October 14, 2021 by Whitewolf 1

Our Merlins are starting to grow old, and we simply do not have anywhere near enough for the RN. We managed whilst we only had a few escorts to worry about, but now we're struggling to get a decent number on one carrier.......it wouldn't be a bad idea to start looking towards the future now.... Mate not going to happen ....the heady days when the Cornish air station was the biggest heliport in europe have long gone 30 mk2s and at VL 24 Mk4 /4a......you might get a couple of extra mk2 when they realise that role changing between ASW and ASAcs is a big ask .....just simplly plug and play ...not. However I wouldnt bet on it.Better of buying some spare parts in my opinion
Whitewolf
I daresay you are right, but, the Blackhawk is favoured as the Puma replacement apart from its capabilities, commonality with allies counts for a lot these days, and if that were to happen, I can see the Seahawk having a place in the RN at somepoint.... Slater
If you can wait say, 10 to 15 years, the Blackhawk's replacement will theoretically be available.
