Heller 1/72 MD Ouragan - a new start [Done]

Fancied another one, and since there's a couple of Heller thingies in the stash, what better than  the first French-designed operational jet  - the Dassault Ouragan!

Designed in 1947 and first flight in 1948, and ordered for the AdA in 1950 this plane became the starting point for the restoration of the French independent aircraft industry.

The kit itself is part of the 100 years Dassault set; basically a reboxing of the Super Etendard, Mirage III, 2000 and this one - impractically large box with four bags of kits loosely in there.  Still, the bits are OK and there's a nice set of decals supplied.

I might stick my finger out and go for the Indian Air Force one. All metal, and relatively clean though it may be it has it's own interest as one of the first export customers.

The intake splitter and nosewheel bay already stuck together and done.

Cockpit based on dry-fit will not show very much, so I'll keep to the base colours.

This is a lovely little kit and the Indian markings with the Scorpion are very striking.

Good luck with this one.

Progress!

Cockpit in this kit is a tub that fits well, but needs good alignment against the intake/nosewheel bay part.
Apart from that, its a black pit - literally. And the opening is tiny, so it's not worth the effort to go nuts there.

I did have to put a little shim of plasticard (the thinnest Evergreen sheet) in there go get a good flush fit.

Nosewheel and gear bays are all coated aluminium afaik - or at least that's what every non-repainted museum walkaround shows...

Exhaust was fixed properly by adding a little styrene block so it's nicely centered.

It's actually pretty relaxing to do something with relatively little parts count.

Wings fitted - and the moulded in tiptanks don't look too bad.

Just a little filler and correcting needed.

A smidgen of plastic putty in the wing roots was all:

The lump of blutack is to keep the sensor in the intake splitter there.

Very well, I'd agree :)

In glorious black:

...and then some Xtreme Metal aluminium allsorts added  (straight alu, white alu and dural)

Gear doors are also waiting, and under that canopy is a seat with additions waiting.

Nearly there now ;)

Calling this done.

Still a very nice kit despite it's age. 10/10 would build again.
Scratch that: will build again, just scored a bargain box of Hellers Patrouille de France Fouga/Thunderjet/Ouragan.

  • alt-92 changed the title to Heller 1/72 MD Ouragan - a new start [Done]

Thanks :) AK Xtreme metals are Xtreme-ly easy in this regard.
It is very thin, but self-levels to a certain extent, and once completely dry (24 hours or so) takes masking very well - although it is not a good idea to leave masking tape on for several weeks :P
