AMX-13 French Light Tank - Tamiya 1/35

Recommended Posts

This was my build for the French Fancy GB which is still running in the GB area. I bought this kit when it first came out in 2016 and it's one I had been looking for an excuse to build for quite a while and the French Fancy GB gave me the perfect opportunity to get it made. I always thought this was an interesting looking vehicle - a little bit different from the norm.

It was a typical Tamiya kit and I found it to be quite a relaxing project - the tank itself is completely OOB - although I have made a small base for it. Rather than my usually worn and muddy weathering, with this one, I decided to go for the 'in use' look - with some worn edges and a bit of dust here and there.

According to Wikipedia:

The AMX-13 is a French light tank produced from 1952 to 1987. It served with the French Army, as the Char 13t-75 Modèle 51, and was exported to more than 26 other nations. Named after its initial weight of 13 tonnes, and featuring a tough and reliable chassis, it was fitted with an oscillating turret built by GIAT Industries (now Nexter) with revolver type magazines, which were also used on the Austrian SK-105 Kürassier. Including prototypes and export versions, there are over a hundred variants including self-propelled guns, anti-aircraft systems, APCs, and ATGM versions. The Wikipedia page for the AMX-13 can be found: HERE

Kit: Tamiya 1/35 Kit No. 35349

Paints: Humbrol, Revell, Vallejo, Citadel and Railmatch acrylics all applied by brush

Base: Wilko picture frame, picture frame backing board MDF from a larger frame, Polystyrene, emery paper, Woodlands Scenics Blended Turf, Army Painter grass tufts/flowers and a Tamiya road sign.

Finally a big thank you to the hosts of the French Fancy GB and to everyone who took the time to comment in my build thread.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

That's another fine build Stix, and good to see the hairy stick strikes again, in perfect form. Nice one. I think that an IDF one could be on the shopping list for Telford.

Absolutely spot on. Flawless paintwork, and nicely restrained weathering - which suits the subject.

Hi John. Hope you and yours are keeping well. Thank you for your comments and I'd love to see your work on an AMX-13 in IDF guise!

Hi Stix,

Great work as always, and congrats on having the thing driving on the 'right' side of the road!

As a matter of interest, I just searched and found that a, and I quote : ''AMX-13 Model 51/75 Light Tank'' was sold by Sotheby's in 2014 for $26,450 USD. Yours looks to be in a better  condition and comes with its own little stretch of road, so would fetch an even larger sum of money, lol

Hi Stix,

A nice representation of a somewhat strange vehicle (for my taste), which was very well with its figure and section of road underneath, next to the sky background.
Good job!
Cheers and TC
Francis.👍

Lovely looking tank here stix. Really like the tools, tracks and built base. Oh and great subtle weathering. Always so neat with your  your work. Fair play.

Great model of a quirky french tank heading for Compiegne. As usual exceptional painting skills, I really like the colour too and the presentation of course.

Cheers,

Ernst.

Nice... I'm doing the TAKOM version at the moment. Lots of fiddly parts... I will be really happy if mine can reach 50% of your beautiful replica.

Hi Sarawakia and thank you. Good luck with your build! I have a Takom version with the Chaffee turret and I know what you mean about the amount of parts! One of the reasons I made this version first!

Kind regards,

Stix
