Russian Medium Tank T-54 B "The End"

Recommended Posts

Outstanding work!

Particularly like the chipping work you've done on the T54, love the variety of shades and depth you've achieved with them, inspiring!

Not only the T54 but the base and building too. Really enjoying watching this come together.

Brilliant.

Hello all 🥳

I continue with the vignette of the T54.
Today again a few pictures of the construction of the building and the weathering of the tank.
The main painting work is finished and now the real fun begins - the details.
It will take time again, but you don't want to rush things.
All right, that's enough - have fun!

Hello all 🥳

Gentlemen, thank you in advance for your kind comments!!
It's time again for an update of the T54B.
Today it is mainly about the building and accessories, which I have partly printed myself.
I also reveal the secret of the title "Rumble in Saigon", which also has to do with the building and was the trigger for the construction of this vignette 😎
In addition, there are some suggestions for those who might be planning a similar urban scene.
I have commented the pictures accordingly and will spare myself many words at this point.
I hope you like it, so have fun!

Hello all  🥳

It's time again for a little update.
Today I would like to talk about weathering and accessories.
All effects shown here were painted with oil colours only, so a big part is done.
Later, pigments etc. will be used to integrate the tank into the scene.
I have started with the figures, but the kit requires a lot of rework and is very time-consuming 😴
Have fun!

In my opinion, many Vietnam models are covered too much with the well-known reddish dust
According to my research, this is only the case on dusty jungle roads or off-road and not in urban environments

Your 54 is probably one of the most realistically weathered models that I have seen. The dirt and dilapidation is spot on, and I particularly like the missing hub from the front road wheel. As for the buildings. All I can say is that they brought back memories of being in SE Asia in the 60's. Great work.

Brilliant work!

Love the base, buildings and assorted extras. As for the T54 just as John has said the weathering is excellent. I thought it looked good in the previous pictures but this latest set really takes it to another level. The oil and grease staining looks really effective and most realistic.  Just the right amount of gloss for recent leakage and very typical of an old Russian diesel.

What did you use?

Hello all  🥳

It is very nice to read that many people like my work - that motivates me a lot and I thank you for that 👍👍👍

Darryl, for oil stains etc. I use my own mixture of Van dyck Brown and Burned Umber oil paints, each with a little AK wet effect.
The first more dried layer with B. Umber and less wet effects, after drying a layer w. Van Dyck with a little more wet effects for fresh oil / petrol look.
Alternatively, Abt. "Engine Grease (20ml)" is also highly recommended because you can control the shine better from the tube than from the bottle.

John, it is exciting to read that my model reminds you of your time in SE Asia.
I have also been planning to build a scene about the historical events of Dien Bien Phu for a long time... 🪂 🪂

Ok, today it's about the figures.
Just this in advance: the Dragon figure kit used requires a lot of rework and is a real nightmare compared to Alpine and Co.
I spent almost a week just scraping, filling and adjusting.
But also the Paracel tanker needs a lot of putty on the legs, seen from the belt down.
Well, no offence-that's model building too.

Pictures are commented as always, so have fun!

For more realism, cheap figures always require surgical intervention 🧟‍♂️ 😷
In this case, the Dragon hands can go into the dog food - Hornet is the better choice.
Hollowing out the sleeves is quickly done with a Dremel.

spacer.png

The sanding marks can be smoothed with Tamyia extra tin.

spacer.png

To breathe more life into the scene and make it more attractive to the viewer, i will give this young girl more firepower for once 😁

her hat is re-engraved

her arm needs to be readjusted

Gentlemen, thank you for the comments 👍👍

Today it's about the T54 again.
After much deliberation, I have decided to use a different base for the scene. The reason for this is that the size of the building draws the eye and the tank, which is supposed to be the main character, does not really come into its own.
The proportions do not feel right...
The second problem was the figures.
The figures from Dragon in combination with the one from Paracel are too different in terms of body size and also the details of the engraving - so they don't harmonise very well either.
So I ordered another Paracel figure and thought up a new scene.
It's rather simple, but it shows off the T54 much better.
As always, the pictures show everything I've done in the last few weeks.
Have fun!

spacer.png

My 2nd and last figure from Paracel - WTF 17€!

spacer.png

New arms from Dragon

spacer.png

They can't be serious.

Even the worst resin figures from the 80s weren't that bad.

spacer.png

Better!

spacer.png

Primer in Black-White

spacer.png

Shadow from below in dark blue-brown (cold tone)

spacer.png

Lights from above in light beige (warm tone)

spacer.png

Basic flesh (my own mix from Tamiya).

As you can see from the example of the head, with the right pre-shading most of the work is already done and you get beautiful contrasts.

spacer.png

Basics in acrylics are done

spacer.png

Now I still need a few bricks as rubble for the tank.

As you can see, these are still quite new and totally unrealistic. This will change 😁

spacer.png

Plaster mixed with light grey paint...

spacer.png

Turn like a schnitzel in the breadcrumbs 😋

spacer.png

Then work the nooks and crannies and you're done.

spacer.png

A sign is needed as a height element for the scene.
I have put together the design from various pictures and printed it.

spacer.png

The frame.

spacer.png

The concrete base coated with tile cement.

spacer.png

Smooth a little..

spacer.png

Cheers!
