Mistubishi Ki-46 III Kai Tamiya 1/48

Recommended Posts

Unable to keep with the hight altitude B-29 bombing Japan, the JAAF put some hopes in the fighter version of the superb reco Ki-46 Dinah, equiped with two 20mm canons in the nose and for  some thirty aircrafts with an oblique 37mm. Some successes were gained but did not change te issue of the war. Tamiya kit is an old stuff but still the only game in town. The model was riveted and markings were made with masks to represent a plane from the 28th Hiko Sentaï in 45, displaying three stars tallies, gained in the hard battles over Japan. A simple and pleasant build. Thanks for looking.

Very nice. I’ve got this kit to build, can I ask what colours did you use?

Hello. The green is H330 from gunze, the grey is Mr Color Mitsubishi grey plus 20% white. best regards.

Very smart indeed and a nicely weathered and worn look on the paint.

Thanks, pictures show lightly weathered aircrafts, but it was fun to do.

- Very nice as usual Jeannot, any problem with the tyres color ?

Not really. H-333 as usual. japanese rubber was of rather poor quality in the late war years.

Nice job Zigomar.  Love the Ki-46.  In my eyes Tamiya's kit is still a beauty despite being a quarter of a century old.  (I have the kit). Along with Hasegawa's Ki-45 & Ki-61, three of the most aesthetically attractive aircraft produced by the Empire of Japan.

It's my age of course, but '97 doesn't seem long ago, nor that kit like an "old stuff" kit to me although I totally take on board your perspective. Personally, much as I do like detail, these days that's only if it's (slide?) moulded in, and find detail which will be hidden once the kit is built somewhere between superfluous and inane. Probably the best part of kits today is the ability to reproduce accurate scale, lines and surfaces thanks to modern technology, yet often manufacturers don't get that right either. e.g. Meng's Me 410 series spinners, propellers and oil coolers. Personally, and aware that plastic kit model building today is primarily the territory of adults, I do think kits have swung too far in the other direction too far today so often reflected in their pricing. I think Eduard have the right formula offering their kits as either-or Weekend Editions or Profipacks as their standard issue editions, with select Limited Editions for the more obsessive.
