Northrop F-5A Royal Libyan air force, CLassic Airframes

Recommended Posts

Hi Mates,

Finished a F-5A from Classic Airframes recently. Thought it would be nice to make it from a lesser know F-5 user, Libya. The operational life of the F-5 in the Royal Libyan air force was a short one due to the coup from Gaddafi in 1970.  Couple of the machines were sold to Turkey I believe.

The kit is OOB except for most of the decals, the Libyan markings are from ArmyCast and the stencils came from the CA kit and from a spare Kinetic kit F-5 decals. Oh, and the pitot is from Master.

Fantastic build. :analintruder:

And thanks for the education, I didn't know that Lybia had flown the F-5.

/Bosse

The US even had an airbase there once! imagine that!

Wheelus AFB... now Mitiga airport/ airbase

regular detachment from USAFE fighter wings, with F-86, F-100, F-102s....

Great Freedom Fighter there. And an unusual scheme too adding interest.

If I recall Libya was where the RAF did a fair bit of hot and high testing and transit stops :hmmm:

And to add even more interest; This particular F-5 still can be found at Mitiga airport, well at least in 2006 when it was photographed;

Also, when looking on Google Maps and zooming in on Mitiga airport this pops up;

Looks like a F-5 to me! 🧐

In both links, the F-5 is apparently kept company by T-33 aircraft.   Very interesting info Erik. 👍

Thumbs down from me as it does NOT resemble any realistic F-5 paint job as they were all painted aluminium dope, never in NMF. Please show me the photographic evidence for the NMF finish, especially for the Libyan a/c as I have been unable to locate any images with your suggested finish of them.

Hi Hans Robben,

Thanks for your comment mate! You are absolutely right, when building this kit I learned it was painted in aluminium paint. See my topic on a Dutch forum;

https://modelbrouwers.nl/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=125&t=54042&sid=344ed316a94cbb2472394f1e816cb505

But hey it’s just a model and it was a good practice in NMF

I know you are the man of accuracy. What’s your latest finished build?

@Nebbor & @Erik Leijdens perhaps you both need to step away from the keyboard there as the comments come across as confrontational and there is no need for capital letters anywhere is there?

I see you are both from the Netherlands, if there is anything between you then I need to know by PM, otherwise just walk away.

BTW I do like the F-5.
