1/144 Revell Avro RJ-85

This 1/144 kit of Revell's Avro RJ-85 is my entry for the GB. However, previous conversions of a couple of kits to represent the shorter and longer versions of the RJ, as well as a third build of the RJ-85 in Lufthansa colours does mean that I am not sure about the markings for this one at the moment. Perhaps this boxings Crossair option would be a good choice, or maybe a WHIF in a classic BEA Red Square scheme if the GB moderators are up for something a bit different. But there is plenty to do before I need to make that decision, so for now here are the box and contents photos.

Hi John and welcome to the Group Build.  Just to say too, that we've already had one Whif entry and so the precedent has been set!

Cheers

Thanks Cliff, I can have a go at laying things out now.

The majority of my modelling time today has been spent cleaning up and assembling the larger sub-assemblies. I blanked off the passenger cabin windows with some plastic strip, then added some weight before gluing the undercarriage bays in place. After that I closed up the fuselage, glued the upper and lower wing sections together and cleaned up the attachment gates on the one piece tailplane.

The next job will be to fill in the windows.

Me too @Mjwomack. I worked in the 146/RJ cell at Chadderton, on the Production Planning side of things, where we produced most of the back end of the fuselage (basically the bit aft of the wings). We manufactured the Rear Cabin, Vestibule Drum and Tail Fuselage as separate sub-assemblies which were then transferred across to the Equipping section to be assembled together and fitted out, with the completed units then being transferred to Hatfield in the early days, and later to Woodford when production of the RJ was transferred there.

I have filled the windows on the passenger cabin and they will be replaced with  Authentic Airliner decals later, the fuselage joins need a bit more work and then I will fit the cockpit glazing and tidy that up. I have adjusted the wing so that the joins are flush with the top of the fuselage, but there are gaps along the sides that will need filling with some plastic strip. I have also reinstated the airbrake join line on the underside and below the rudder.

It has been a while since my last post and things have barely moved on. The engines have been assembled, the cockpit glazing has been added and everything is now ready for primer. I hope to get that done in the next few days, and if the weather holds I may even get the top coat on. After a kind offer of a decal set from @Skodadriver, the planned scheme has moved on from a BEA what-if to a Jersey European RJ-85 with the passenger cabin and cockpit windows being replaced by a set from Authentic Airliners, I still have plans for the BEA Red Square scheme at some point in the future though.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am slowly working my way through the list of jobs to complete this one. Tonight I masked up the leading edges and elevators, the next job is to brush on a couple of coats of silver over those areas.

@dnl42 I haven't forgotten about your request for shots of earlier builds, I will post some just as soon as I get this one finished.

After a light sanding to key the gloss surface, I painted the leading edges and elevators with some Revell Aquacolor Silver. One area that I had forgotten to mask off yesterday was the APU exhaust on the starboard side, after covering the area with a piece of 20mm tape, I trimmed around the outlet and brushed some silver over the area.

I have just finished applying decals to the main structures and these will be left to set up before I seal them in with a clear coat. Jobs still to do on this one are fit of the undercarriage and doors, to finish off the paint and then put the decals on the engines, and the final task will be to fit the aerials.

That's looking very smart John.  Really nice.

I took a few flights on these out of Birmingham.  I can't remember exactly where to now ;), but it would have been Belfast and/or Edinburgh most likely.

Well thats looking good, not familiar with the airline but looks good to my eyes.

Cheers bud. The airline was Birmingham based here in the UK and operated from the mid 80's into the 90's before becoming a part of Flybe.

Thanks very much Cliff. Your trip may even have been on this aircraft. We had a trip on a British Airways 146 when returning from Vienna, the only time I had a commercial trip in one.  Mrs N flew Manchester-London City in one, she said that the approach was an amazing experience.  :)

Looking good, nice livery and one of airliners I really adore. Too bad they are not so common to see nowadays here in Balcans...

Thanks SK, I am glad that you like the livery. It's a shame that there are not more around, but I guess that they are not viable for operators to use compared to the larger twin engine aircraft.

Looks great dude. Love the “Stealth B2” decals 😃

Cheers Matey. If you think that looks like a B2 you should see -300 with the logo angled across the tail. :)

Update Time.

I finished this one off earlier tonight so here are a few snaps of the end result. I'll take the glamour shots for the gallery tomorrow.
