Spot of the day, Part 5

Bit of a variety over this weekend - far too many hours of dashcam footage to go through but these two were fairly easy to find:

52221887892_6177c08ca6_c.jpg

My impressions as I passed it by was that the Sherpa/Freight Rover van was on an 80's Y plate, but t looks newer than that so I think I misread it as I went past. The Merc looked very nice, and I say this as someone who doesn't get wowed by SLs.

Other things seen included a pair of Alfas, a 146 (when did you last see one of those?) and a GTV coming the other way on the dual carriageway. I also saw three MGBs out and about, two in standard red with chrome bumpers and one which (in view of my last completion) was the highlight being a rubber bumper version in Russet Brown :D Unfortunately this one was a GT rather than a convertible, but it still looked very nice - model related highlight of the weekend.

Puzzle of the weekend was a MacLaren. Stupidly I forgot my phone, but it was dark metallic red, very long compared to every other MacLaren I've seen on the road, the front looked sharper and it had a dark scallop on the side and carbon fibre rear spoiler. The nearest thing I could see when I looked it up just now was a P1, but I can't imagine anyone taking their P1 out for a trip to M&S. Any MacLaren afficionados have any ideas?

And finally, embarassing spot of the day. Today I found that the armrests for the back seats in my car open up to give some more storage. I've had the car just short of 12 years...

That VW SP2 is far too low. Unless it's on air suspension it surely must be awful to drive.

@keefr22 surely you now know the HB Viva Brabham was a terribly damp squib and a Mk1 Escort was a much better bet?! Saying that, one rolled up to the club parking for Donington Historic a few months ago and it was good see. The accompanying HC Firenza was more my style though.

The front end on the VW SP2 had the original Beetle front axle fitted as it was built in the VW plant in Mexico. As it was a torsion bar suspension it's easy to wind them down as long as shorter stiffer shock absorbers were fitted. We used to lower our Beetles the same way front and back, for the Cal-Look craze and yes they were sometimes uncomfortable if lowered too far!

I was walking to the supermarket this morning and saw this:

I hope they do something about that flat back tyre.

This afternoon I happened to look out of my window just in time to see a 1960s Aston Martin DBS drive past.

A curiosity.

First spotted on a BBC News bit about the heat in Spain and they panned across a square and, in one corner, was.... hold on, that looks like a A110, and it was.

https://all-andorra.com/monument-renault-alpine-a110/

The link takes you to a site about it with numerous photos and I must say it's pretty good Why is it there, who paid for it? No idea.

@bigbadbadge as with all the car show pictures I like zooming in to see what's around the feature car !  The  yellow Alfa 8C next to the gorgeous GTV  complete with umbrella  !

Hi Gary, yes that was lovely too, just a bit too modern for me so didn't snap it, nor all the Ferraris either, they don't get my motor running, I know I will probably be taken out and shot now 😄😉

You don't see a car park filled like this very often.   This Austin A40 line up took place at the Helicopter Museum, Weston Super Mare, last Sunday.  Evidently it was the AGM for the A40 owners club and they had booked an area of the museum for their meeting.  I volunteer at the museum and, while there on Sunday, I took the opportunity to take some photos.  I met one gent who was attending and he told me that he had travelled down from Chester.

There were nine cars and I took a front and back photo of each.  If anyone wants copies of the photos then send me a pm with your email addy and I'll send them off.

cheers,

Mike

Getting off the park and ride bus on Thursday, an AC428 Convertible passed on a trailer.  I kind of recognised it but had to look up the model name.

You know, the A40 was so "meh" when I was a kid, but I look at them now and think "They are so cool". Bit like the ADO16...

The A40's also look great fun in historic touring car racing! Always loved ADO16's as my first car was an Austin 1100. I'd love to see one or more of those in historic racing, but as they're really just a big Mini there'd probably be no point!

A bright yellow Reliant Kitten! Not sure if it was the saloon or the estate version, either way it was tiny. Not seen one for a very long time.

Hi guys, I've been vacationing for the past couple of weeks, went to France, then crossed the border to Germany. I don't know how it came about but I visited no less than 3 car museums. In France, I went to the National Automobile Museum in Mulhouse which holds the Schlumpf private collection of about 500 cars. It was awesome, and highly recommended when you're in the neighbourhood 🙂

Link to their website here.

Then, in Germany, because @desert falcon recommended it to me, I went to the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. While I was there, I went to the Mercedes-Benz museum as well because it's just a couple of km's from there! I must say, I liked the Porsche museum, but I liked the Mercedes museum even more because of the variety of cars (and trucks, yay!) they have there. I went to Stuttgart with my family last week on the hottest day which was best spent indoors anyway, so what better place to be 😎

Here are some pics I shot, they're just snaps on my phone so not very well taken.

From Mulhouse:

They have a lot of Bugatti's there! The brand originates from the region.

These 2 are amazing...

20220724175611-a925f142-me.jpg

Those wheels are 91 centimeter in diameter.

Some other brands as well...

20220724175610-b007dee9-me.jpg

This is an Aston Martin, apparently the most expensive car in the world back then ('80's), because of the technology used.

20220724175609-2ba7c87d-me.jpg

Then, after we moved our base to Germany, the Porsches. Johnny has shown a lot of them already here, these are some of my favourites.

A drive through Stuttgart later, and there's the Mercedes museum, which is rather nice as a building as well. There are loads of historic cars.

This one has been built beautifully a couple of times on this site.

20220724175607-967115fb-me.jpg

Some absolute classics, also well represented on this site.

20220724175608-ea7cd00a-me.jpg

Just as nice as @CrazyCrank's recent rendition 🙂

20220724175609-b8262ea1-me.jpg

And this one, which is my favourite SL.

20220724175609-c1c94737-me.jpg

Afterwards, it appeared to me that we'd been looking at a 143 mln dollar car... A friend of mine sent me the article.

https://www.motor1.com/news/586960/mercedes-benz-300-slr-uhlenhaut-coupe-143-million/

There are loads more beautiful cars. A staff member just finished a quick polish before I took the picture.

20220724175608-9d9da060-me.jpg

And trucks as well!

20220724175608-ac66e412-me.jpg

This one, I was especially interested in because I'll be building a SWB 1628s tanker for Revell GB.

20220724175608-98ec9850-me.jpg

Also, buses, specialist vehicles, too much to show here. Highly recommended, definitely worth a trip.

I took 100's of pictures. If you would like to see more, just PM me and I'll send you a link to the files.
