Francois Faucher is also doing some fabulous 3D work like you are Nick.

You guys have a lot in common with what you are both doing.

I can see some collaborative work between you two in the offing some time in the future.

Thank you Nick, you do very nice work yourself. Your attention to detail is very impressive. I find my data by searching the net, the picture of the tank is actually part of a much bigger shot. I happened to see the tank in the background by chance.

I'm currently posting on 2 other sites, Ships of scale and Model car magazine. Could I ask where you saw my work? I haven't posted much here yet because I'm finding it a bit more difficult to load pictures since this site doesn't accept photos from google photo.

A cad cooperation could be fun. I'll pm you my email so we can tank about it.

I had some issues printing the outer mesh, so ended up drawing a custom support structure that has fine enough contact points to be removable without damaging the mesh whilst being JUST strong enough to support it during printing.

Heres the result-

Version 1 failed because of the horizontal wires. Every time you get to the centre of one, that’s a relatively large surface putting a high load on the much smaller vertical cross section wires preceding it and eventually it just pulls free and fails.

Anyway, it worked, the baggyness you can see goes away as it  dries/cures.

On the home straight for the tank now, just got to CNC cut some ali brackets and straps, tweak the tank to include the new data provider by François and draw the divers helmet rear lamps, the filler cap and the big round fuel feed plate on the uderside of the tank (anybody got any detail for this, another seldom-seem part of this beast!) I think tere are at least two different types of fuel cock on top of the tank, so I may draw both as well.

Similarly I think there may be more than one riviting scheme for these tanks too? I definately found one with the row of rivets across the concelaed front face as I have depicted, but also the way François has modelled the rivets is also evident in other images, I may combine both? there must be at least one joint like mine on the tank, and there is likely internal structure as François has implied too.

The fun continues.

SO Ive finished (nearly) drawing the engine (nose) Petrol Tank (tail) wheels (4 corners) so I've only got all the stuff in between to worry about now :)

I keep looking at that bloody chassis.

I’ve got some nice brass sheet now…trouble is I don’t really know how the real one is made.

I know it’s ‘hand formed’ by traction engine people (no really, it is) but how? I also know it’s not very regular hence the big jig it’s in.

so I’m guessing it’s a ‘heat it up and snot it’ job, like a big complicated horse shoe? The likes of Pocher pressed their chassis from mild steel but that level of tooling remains beyond me and even then I seem to remember they were a bit ripply on the extreme bends.
So I’m currently toying with making a brass CNC sheet ‘flat pack’ so the top and bottom faces can be curved and soldered to the sides plates to form the C section, maybe on a jig? I know I said I had decided to use the Airfix chassis, but I think I’m going to have to scratch this itch, I keep looking at the Airfix thing, and eew. The walls are 5x thicker than they should be and all the subtlety is lacking. I know I should just put up with it, but I’ve gone this far now, I’ve got the kit to have a crack at it, so what the hell.

watch this space. BTW the chassis problem is one of the main barriers to thinking about other scales. Just sayin’. 🫣😈

oh. I'll get me coat.

That makes me want to give up then.

On the plus side, that is pretty much How I intend to build mine - 3 pieces soldered together. Right to the trusty peecee!

Before that though, I'm just trying to finalise the tank, All I have is a screen grab from video of the underside of the tank:-

I don't know what that is? some kind of drain plug? Airfix just have a vague cylinder affair, it does seem to have some complexity to it, any ideas anyone?

on the plus side, the same video has some helpful white chassis shots, so for once you can see what's going  on

Desperation setting in, I hadn't starting trawling videos for screen grabs, but actually these have worked quite well. I've never seen that ring that sits between the engine and the blower before and its clearly well nailed-on so goes some way to explaining the mystery of how it mounts - the big jubilee clip thing was never going to cut it IMHO. I think it's basically jammed in - pushed hard against that newly spotted ring at the rear and then clamped onto the bar at the front. Done.

Nick, Is that a YouTube video where you got the screen grabs from?

Thanks for that Nick!

That was a really interesting video to watch.

God knows who buys these things, and I dread to think what they cost. Glorious though. 👍🧐

Interesting thought was that it the continuation blowers are being made as exact replicas of the car as it started at the Le Mans in 1930, how would they be street legal with their emissions?

Note some subtle differences between the race cars and the road cars built to legalise them for the Le Man's races. Mainly bolts on the race car chassis, as opposed to rivets on the road cars. (Front top of chassis frame)

I'm looking forward to getting more detail info for my build here. Let me know if you need anything as I may have pics in my references that could be useful.

One I found too late is the mounting for the auxiliary fuel tank. It sits on a shelf fitted to the rear side of the firewall supported by struts.

If you have any pics of the rear side of the firewall showing how the oil and fuel lines were routed I would love to see them!

As a thought Nick, would there be any mileage in doing the circular name plates fitted on the Hartford shock absorbers alongside the gauges you are doing for the dashboard when printing them?

The shock absorbers are on my list, I already drew the decals. They will be CNC cut arms on 3D printed boss/friction plates. Springs similar breakdown.

A jump ahead of my thoughts already Nick!

At the rate you are going the 'may contain Airfix' will certainly ring true.

To be fair though, considering the age of the kit, it is not all bad, but the things you are doing will bring it up to a different level altogether along with the Bugatti bits you are developing too.
