Tornado GR.1, ZA613 /04, No. 27 Sqn, RAF Marham, 1985

Recommended Posts

ZA613 was the 152nd Tornado delivered to the RAF, entering service in August 1982. It was one of the initial batch to serve with 27 squadron at Marham and remained with the unit until it relinquished Tornados in 1993. The aircraft was later converted to a GR4, and survives to this day at RAF Honington as a ground instructional airframe.

This model depicts the Tornado in its heyday of the mid 1980s, as flown from Marham by 27 squadron.

Really, really nice. I do like some cold war aviation and what could be more iconic than  GR.1?

Great work!

Being armour oriented I'm not current with "wingy things" but if I wanted to do a GR.1 would you recommend the revell kit as an oob build? (As opposed to the hobbyboss,  italeri, airfix ...)

Thanks

@SAT69 it generally fitted together pretty well, just watch out for the intake areas. I found that I didn’t really follow the instructions in order as there are quite a few parts you can build at any stage before attaching them to the main airframe. The flaps and slats diagrams in the instructions aren’t that clear, so do a bit of dry fitting first to check. I’d also recommend aftermarket seats, which I’ll be getting for my next one. Having said that, I built this from the older boxing ‘Tornado IDS’, not the GR4 Farewell kit, so the latter may be better. Generally though, a very nice kit.

@Jasper dog having built the Revell, Airfix and Italeri, in my opinion the Revell kit is by far the best. For this model I used the IDS boxing, and apart from the aftermarket decals it’s oob; the kit has all the aerials, stores, etc for a GR1. I’m not sure about the GR4 Farewell kit, but I’m guessing it’s at least as good. The Airfix kit is pretty old now, and the fit is clunky, but it’s still a decent shape, whereas I just felt the Italeri one didn’t quite look right. Definitely Revell is best in my opinion.

@Lord Riot that is a good looking Tornado.

I attended the 1984 Mildenhall air show and, for me, one of the stars of the static park was 27 Squadron's nearly new ZA494, wearing the fin code 15 IIRC.  Less than 3 weeks later she was written off in a non-fatal crash.  I'm given to understand that the pilot was sampling the pitch attitude on the approach and the FBW computers got stuck in a loop and getting out of phase with the pilot's inputs.  At low-level he didn't have much leeway so thankfully Martin Baker were there to provide the get-out clause.

Lovely job Lord Riot. Particularly liked the image of the T17 and Tornado. JFYI My first posting was Wyton. The Canberras were just turning hemp when I left in March 83 to join 27 at Marham. @stever219 Your right about ZA494, it crashed at Goose Bay on approach. The pilot was the Boss who broke his collar bone. I had to drive him back from the medical centre in the crew bus avoiding all the potholes.

Great to see a green/grey 27 Sqn Tornado with tail numbers rather than letters.

Superb skill Lord Riot. I have the Revell GR4 Farewell one in my stash. Birthday pressie from my daughter ( send me a link for your birthday dad ). Seeing your build makes me think I need to push it up the pecking order. I also have a Canberra PR9 to do and wonder which hemp you used on your Canberra ?

Thanks @Red Roy

It was a rattle can I used for the hemp Canberra but I can’t remember exactly. We’re away at the moment so I’ll have a look at the weekend and let you know. I do remember I was trying to find a suitable hemp spray for a while!
